Saʿīd Bilāl b. Saʿīd: He was to the people of Syria as al-Ḥasan was to the people of Basra. He transmitted from Ibn ʿUmar and Jābir, among others. From al-Awzāʿī, who said: I heard Bilāl b. Saʿīd say: Do not look at the smallness of the sin, but look at Him Whom you have disobeyed. Sukayna bt. al-Ḥusayn b. ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib Sukayna bt. al-Ḥusayn b. ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib: Her name was Āmina, and it is said: Umayma. Sukayna was a nickname by which she became known. Her mother was al-Rabāb bt. Imriʾ al-Qays b. ʿAdī b. Aws al-Kalbī. He had been a Christian, then he came to ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb ؓ and embraced Islam, so ʿUmar called for a spear for him and appointed him over those of Quḍāʿa in Syria who embraced Islam. He assumed that post before he had prayed a single prayer, and evening had not come before al-Ḥusayn b. ʿAlī sought his daughter al-Rabāb in marriage, and he married her to him. She bore him ʿAbd Allāh and Sukayna. Al-Ḥusayn ﷺ used to say: By your life, I love a house in which Sukayna and al-Rabāb dwell; I love them both and lavish most of my wealth, And none may reproach me for it; I shall not obey them, even if they find fault, For as long as I live, or until the riding camels bear me away. Sukayna held a lofty station in beauty, refinement, and eloquence; her house was a gathering-place for men of letters and poets. She married ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Ḥasan b. ʿAlī, and he was killed at al-Ṭāʾif before consummating the marriage. Then Muṣʿab b. al-Zubayr married her, and gave her a dower of one million dirhams; her brother ʿAlī b. al-Ḥusayn took her to him, and he gave him forty thousand dinars. She bore him al-Rabāb, and she used to dress her in pearls and say: I clothe her in them only that she may outshine him. ʿAbd al-Malik b. Marwān sought her in marriage, but her mother said: No, by God, he shall never marry her, for he has killed the son of my brother Muṣʿab. Then al-Aṣbagh b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. Marwān married her; he was governor of Egypt. ʿAbd al-Malik was jealous of him, and wrote to him: Choose Egypt or Sukayna. So he divorced her before consummating the marriage, and granted her twenty thousand dinars as a gift. After Muṣʿab, ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUthmān b. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Ḥakam married her in his place. She bore him Ḥakīm, ʿUthmān, and Zubayḥa. Before her, he had been married to Fāṭima bt. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zubayr, and when he sought Sukayna, she made him swear by divorce from Fāṭima that he would not prefer Fāṭima over her. Then she suspected that he had preferred her, so she sought the help of Hishām b. Ismāʿīl, the governor of Madinah, against him, and he had him swear an oath. Then he ordered Sukayna to return to him. He sent to her: Your affair is now in your hands. She sent back to him: We did not think that we had become so insignificant to you as this contempt; something was troubling my soul, and I feared sin. But since you have been cleared of that, nothing shall be preferred over you. Then Zayd b. ʿUmar b. ʿUthmān married Sukayna in his place; then Ibrāhīm b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAwf married her in his place. She was her own guardian, so she did not carry out the marriage. It is said: She was taken to him in Egypt and found that he had died. ʿAlī b. al-Ḥusayn al-Aṣbahānī related, with his chain from al-Madāʾinī, who said: with his chain from al-Shaʿbī: that al-Farazdaq set out on pilgrimage, and when he had completed his ḥajj he turned aside to Madinah. He entered upon Sukayna bt. al-Ḥusayn and greeted her. She said: O Farazdaq, who is the most poetic of people? He said: I am. She said: You have lied. More poetic than you is the one who says: With my soul I ransom one whose avoidance is hard upon me, and whose visitation is rare; One whom I do not see morning or evening, and who visits me when the sleepers are asleep. He said: By God, if you would permit me, I would make you hear something better than it. She said: Remove him. So he was taken out. Then he returned to her the next day and entered upon her. She said: O Farazdaq, who is the most poetic of people? He said: I am. She said: You have lied; your companion Jarīr is more poetic than you, where he says: Were it not for modesty, weeping would have overcome me, and I would have visited your grave, for the beloved is visited. She was one who, when the bedfellow forsook her bed, talk was kept secret and secrets remained chaste. Companions do not long remain before they part; night and day pass over them in succession. He said: By God, if you permit me, I shall make you hear something better than it. So she ordered him taken out. Then he returned to her on the third day, and around her were slave-girls of hers like statues. Al-Farazdaq looked at one of them and was taken with her, and he stared at her dumbfounded. Sukayna said to him: O Farazdaq, who is the most poetic of people? He said: I am. She said: You have lied; your companion is more poetic than you, where he says: The eyes in whose glance there is sickness have slain us, then they have not revived our slain. They cast down the man of understanding until he cannot stir, though they are the weakest of God's creation in frame. I followed them with an eye whose pupil is drowned; will what you see leave any pupil to the eye? He said: By God, if you would let me, I would make you hear something better than it. She ordered him to be expelled. He turned to her and said: O daughter of the Messenger of God, I have a great right upon you. I came from Makkah intending to greet you, and my reward for that has been your calling me a liar, your expelling me, your preferring Jarīr over me, and your preventing me from reciting any of my poetry to you, while my patience has been exhausted thereby. These fates come and go, and perhaps I shall not leave Madinah before I die. When I die, command that I be wrapped in my shroud and buried in the lap of this slave-girl — meaning the one who had pleased him. Sukayna laughed and gave him the slave-girl. He departed with her, and she ordered the slave-girls, and they pushed them from behind. She called to him: O Farazdaq, keep her and treat her well, for I have preferred you with her over myself. ʿAlī b. al-Ḥusayn said: with his chain from Muḥammad b. Sallām, who said: Jarīr, al-Farazdaq, Kuthayyir, Jamīl, and Nuṣayb gathered at the hospitality of Sukayna bt. al-Ḥusayn. They stayed for some days, then she gave them permission, and they entered upon her. She sat where she could see them but they could not see her, and she could hear their words. Then she sent out a comely maid of hers who had memorized poems and reports. She said: Which of you is al-Farazdaq? He said to her: Here I am. She said: Are you the one who says: They guided me down from eighty fathoms, as a falcon with clipped feathers swoops down; And when my feet stood firm on the ground, they said: Is he alive to be hoped for, or a slain man we should beware of? He said: Yes. She said: What prompted you to divulge her secret and your own? Why did you not conceal her and conceal yourself? Take this thousand and rejoin your family. Then she went in to her mistress and came out, and said: Which of you is Jarīr? He said: Here I am. She said: Are you the one who says: A huntress of hearts came to you by night, but this is no time for visiting, so return in peace. He said: Yes. She said: Then why did you not welcome her? Take this thousand and depart. Then she went in and came out, and said: Is Kuthayyir among you? He said: Here I am. She said: Are you the one who says: I admired in you, O ʿAzza, qualities that are noble when qualities are counted in four: Your drawing near until the seeker of youth becomes hopeful, and your raising the means of passion when he hopes. By God, a noble man who is delayed does not know whether he will forget you when you distance yourself, or humble himself. He said: Yes. She said: You have been refined and composed. Take this thousand and rejoin your family. Then she went in and came out, and said: Which of you is Nuṣayb? He said: Here I am. She said: Are you the one who says: Were it not that it would be said that Nuṣayb has grown foolish, I would say: With my soul I ransom the little gazelles; With my soul I ransom every slender-waisted one, whose belly is hollow; when she is wronged, she has no recourse. He said: Yes. She said: You have mourned us when small and praised us when grown. Take these four thousand and rejoin your family. Then she went in and came out, and said: O Jamīl, my mistress sends you greetings and says: By God, I have not ceased to long to see you since I heard your saying: Would that I knew whether I shall spend a night in Wādī al-Qurā; then indeed I would be happy. Every conversation among them has cheer, and every slain one among them is a martyr. You made our talk cheer and our slain martyrs. Take this thousand dinars and rejoin your family. And from Ḥammād, from his father, from Abū ʿUbayd Allāh al-Zubayrī, who said: The transmitter of Jarīr, the transmitter of Kuthayyir, the transmitter of Jamīl, the transmitter of al-Aḥwaṣ, and the transmitter of Nuṣayb gathered. Each of them boasted of his patron and said: My patron is the most poetic. They appointed Sukayna bt. al-Ḥusayn as arbiter, because they knew her intellect and her insight into poetry. They sought permission to enter upon her, and she granted it. Their affair was mentioned to her, and she said to the transmitter of Jarīr: Is not your patron the one who says: A huntress of hearts came to you by night, but this is no time for visiting, so return in peace. What hour is sweeter for visiting than nightly arrival? May God make your patron ugly and his poetry ugly. Why did he not say: So enter in peace? Then she said to the transmitter of Kuthayyir: Is not your patron the one who says: My eye is delighted by what her eye is delighted by, and the best thing is that by which the eye is delighted. There is nothing more delightful to the eye than marriage. Does your patron love to marry? May God make your patron ugly and his poetry ugly. Then she said to the transmitter of Jamīl: Is not your patron the one who says: If she had left my reason with me, I would not have sought her; but my seeking her is for the reason I have lost. I do not think your patron is in love; he is only seeking his reason. May God make your patron ugly and his poetry ugly. Then she said to the transmitter of Nuṣayb: Is not your patron the one who says: I am mad for Daʿd as long as I live; and if I die, alas, who will be mad for her after me? I see no concern in him except for who will love her after him. May God make him ugly and his poetry ugly. Why did he not say: I am mad for Daʿd as long as I live; and if I die, then may Daʿd not be suitable for any man of means after me. Then she said to the transmitter of al-Aḥwaṣ: Is not your patron the one who says: Of two lovers who promised each other and corresponded, until when the Pleiades rose they flew off; They spent the most blissful and sweetest night, until when morning dawned they parted. He said: Yes. She said: May God make him ugly and his poetry ugly. Why did he not say: "They embraced." On that day she did not praise anyone or place anyone first. In another version: She said to the transmitter of Jamīl: Is not your patron the one who says: Would that I were blind and deaf, led by Buthayna, whose speech is not hidden from me. He said: Yes. She said: May God have mercy on your patron, for he was truthful in his poetry, and he was as his name implies. So she judged in his favor. Sukayna died in Makkah on Thursday, five nights having passed of Rabīʿ al-Awwal of this year, and Shayba b. Naṣṣāḥ the Qur'an reciter prayed over her. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUbayd Allāh b. Abī Mulayka ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUbayd Allāh b. Abī Mulayka b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Judʿān al-Taymī, of Taym Quraysh; the name of Abū Mulayka was Zuhayr: Ibn Judʿān was one of the most generous men. His wealth was immense, and he had a bowl that was open to all. When he grew old, his kinsmen placed him under guardianship, and whenever he gave something, they would go after the recipient and take it back from him. So when a beggar came to him, he would say: Stay close to me until I slap you, and you will not be satisfied with me unless you slap me, or unless your slap is ransomed with a generous ransom. When his family learned of this, they left him alone with his wealth. Ibn Judʿān used to say: Indeed, though my wealth does not reach the full extent of my character, I am a giver of what my hands possess of wealth; I do not withhold wealth except where I spend it, and no change of circumstance changes me from one state to another. Ibn Abī Mulayka was a jurist; he saw thirty Companions. He died in this year. ʿAbda b. Abī Lubāba, Abū al-Qāsim ʿAbda b. Abī Lubāba, Abū al-Qāsim: He heard from ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmar. Al-Awzāʿī said: ʿAbda said: The closest of people to showing off is the one who feels safest from it. 626 - ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Zakariyyā al-Khuzāʿī: From ʿAlī b. Abī Jamīla, who said: ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Zakariyyā said: I struggled to keep silent about what did not concern me for twenty years before I was able to achieve what I wanted of it. He said: He would not allow anyone in his gathering to backbite anyone. He would say: If you mention God, we will help you; but if you mention people, we will leave you. ʿAbd Allāh transmitted from ʿUbāda and Abū al-Dardāʾ. He died in this year. ʿAlī b. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-ʿAbbās b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib ʿAlī b. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-ʿAbbās b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, Abū Muḥammad: His mother was Zurʿa bt. Musarriḥ. He was born on the night ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib ﷺ was killed, in Ramaḍān of the year forty, so he was named after him and given his kunya. ʿAbd al-Malik [b. Marwān] said to him: I will not tolerate your having both the name and the kunya. So he changed his kunya, and he was called Abū Muḥammad. He was the most handsome Qurayshī on the face of the earth, and the one who prayed the most. He used to pray a thousand rakʿas in a day and a night, and he used to dye his hair black. Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-Bāqī informed us, with his chain from Hishām b. Sulaymān al-Makhzūmī: that when ʿAlī b. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-ʿAbbās arrived in Makkah as a pilgrim for ḥajj or ʿumra, Quraysh would abandon their gatherings in the Sacred Mosque, forsake their circles, and attend the gathering of ʿAlī b. ʿAbd Allāh, out of esteem, reverence, and honor. If he sat, they sat; if he rose, they rose; if he walked, they all walked around him. No Qurayshī would have a gathering of remembrance in the Sacred Mosque to which people came until ʿAlī b. ʿAbd Allāh left the sanctuary. ʿAlī died in Syria in this year. It is also said: in the year eighteen. ʿAlī b. Rabāḥ b. Qaṣīr ʿAlī b. Rabāḥ b. Qaṣīr, Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Lakhmī: He was born in the year fifteen, the year of Yarmūk. He was one-eyed; his eye was lost on the day of Dhū al-Ṣawārī in the sea with ʿAbd Allāh b. Saʿd b. Abī Sarḥ in the year thirty-four. He used to lead the delegation of the Yemenis of the people of Egypt to ʿAbd al-Malik b. Marwān, and he had a standing with ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. Marwān. It was he who escorted Umm al-Banīn bt. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. Marwān to al-Walīd b. ʿAbd al-Malik. Then ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz became angry with him and sent him on campaign to Ifrīqiya, and he remained there until he died in this year. It is also said: in the year one hundred and fourteen. ʿImrān b. Milḥān, Abū Rajāʾ al-ʿUṭāridī [ʿImrān b. Milḥān, Abū Rajāʾ al-ʿUṭāridī: A Tamīmī of the Mukhaḍramūn; he was born eleven years before the Hijra. He died in this year, having reached one hundred and twenty-eight years of age]. Fāṭima bt. al-Ḥusayn b. ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib Fāṭima bt. al-Ḥusayn b. ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib ؓ: Her mother was Umm Isḥāq bt. Ṭalḥa b. ʿUbayd Allāh. Al-Ḥasan b. al-Ḥasan b. ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib married her, and she bore him ʿAbd Allāh. Then he died, and ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAmr b. ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān married her. Al-Zubayr b. Bakkār said: Al-Ḥasan b. al-Ḥasan b. ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib ؓ had proposed to his uncle al-Ḥusayn b. ʿAlī. Al-Ḥusayn said to him: O son of my brother, I have been waiting for this from you. Come with me. He went out until he brought him into his house, then he brought out to him his two daughters: Fāṭimah and Sukaynah, and said: Choose. He chose Fāṭimah, so he married her to him. It was said that Sukaynah's affair was referred to her, and that she was not given in marriage. When death came to al-Ḥasan b. al-Ḥasan, he said to Fāṭimah: "You are a woman who is desired, and it is as if I can see ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAmr b. ʿUthmān, when my funeral procession is brought out, coming on his horse, having combed his hair, wearing his fine garment, walking alongside the people, seeking you. Marry whom you wish other than him, for I shall leave behind in this world no concern other than you." She said to him: "You are safer than that." She reassured him with oaths of manumission and charity that she would not marry him. Al-Ḥasan died, and his funeral procession was brought out. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAmr b. ʿUthmān met her in the very condition al-Ḥasan had described. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAmr b. ʿUthmān was called al-Muṭarraf because of his beauty. He looked at Fāṭimah, who was unveiled, striking her face, so he sent word to her: "We have a need for your face, so be gentle with it." Her hands fell limp, and he knew that about her, and she veiled her face. When she became lawful again, he sent to her proposing marriage, and she said: "What about my oath which I swore?" He sent to her: "For every slave you have, you shall have two slaves, and for every thing, two things." So he gave her compensation for her oath, and she married him and bore him Muḥammad, al-Qāsim, and Ruqayyah. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Ḥasan used to say: "I have never hated anyone as I hated ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAmr, and I have never loved anyone as I loved his son Muḥammad." From Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAmr b. ʿUthmān, who said: "Our mother Fāṭimah bt. al-Ḥusayn b. ʿAlī gathered us and said: 'O my sons, by Allah, no one among the people of folly attained anything through their folly, nor did they achieve any of their pleasures, except that the people of virtue attained the like through their virtue. So conceal yourselves with the beautiful concealment of Allah.'" Qatādah b. Diʿāmah, Abū al-Khaṭṭāb al-Sadūsī. He died in this year. Qatādah b. Diʿāmah al-Sadūsī, Abū al-Khaṭṭāb al-Baṣrī, the blind, one of the scholars of the Tābiʿūn and the leading authorities. He related from Anas b. Mālik and a group of the Tābiʿūn, among them Saʿīd b. al-Musayyab, Abū al-ʿĀliyah, Zurārah b. Awfā, ʿAṭāʾ, Mujāhid, Muḥammad b. Sīrīn, Masrūq, Abū Mijlaz, and others. Large numbers of the major scholars related from him, such as Ayyūb, Ḥammād b. Maslamah, Ḥumayd al-Ṭawīl, Saʿīd b. Abī ʿArūbah, al-Aʿmash, Shuʿbah, al-Awzāʿī, al-Layth, Misʿar, Maʿmar, and Hammām. Ibn al-Musayyab said: "No Iraqi came to me more excellent than him." Bakr al-Muzanī said: "I have not seen anyone with a better memory than him." Muḥammad b. Sīrīn said: "He is one of the people with the best memories." Maṭar al-Warrāq said: "When Qatādah heard a ḥadīth, wailing and trembling would seize him until he had memorized it." Al-Zuhrī said: "He is more learned than Makḥūl." Maʿmar said: "I have not seen anyone more knowledgeable in jurisprudence than al-Zuhrī, Ḥammād, and Qatādah." Qatādah said: "I have never heard anything but my heart retained it." Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal said: "He is the best memorizer of the people of al-Baṣrah. He does not hear anything but he memorizes it. The ṣaḥīfah of Jābir was read to him once and he memorized it. He was one of the scholars." One day he was mentioned, and he praised his knowledge, his jurisprudence, and his knowledge of differences of opinion, exegesis, and other matters. He said: "You will rarely find anyone who surpasses him; as for his equal, perhaps." Abū Ḥātim said: "His death took place in Wāsiṭ during the plague—that is, in this year—and he was fifty-six or fifty-seven years old." Maymūn b. Mihrān. Maymūn b. Mihrān, Abū Ayyūb, client of Banū al-Naḍr b. Muʿāwiyah: He was a mukātab (contract slave) of theirs, and he paid his kitābah and was freed. He was a cloth merchant, then he occupied himself with knowledge. He asked Ibn al-Musayyab about the subtle points of the sciences. ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz appointed him over the kharāj of al-Jazīrah. He was born in the year 40, and he died in this year. He transmitted with chains from Ibn ʿUmar, Ibn ʿAbbās, and others, and he was trustworthy. ʿAlī b. Muḥammad b. Ḥassūn informed us with his chain from ʿĪsā b. Kathīr al-Asadī, who said: "I walked with Maymūn b. Mihrān until he reached the door of his house, and with him was his son ʿAmr. When I wanted to leave, ʿAmr said to him: 'O father, will you not offer him supper?' He said: 'That is not my intention.'" Mūsā b. Wardān. Mūsā b. Wardān, client of ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Sarḥ al-ʿĀmirī, called Abū ʿUmar: He heard from Saʿd b. Abī Waqqāṣ, Abū Hurayrah, Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī, and other Companions. Al-Layth b. Saʿd and others related from him. He used to tell stories in Egypt. He died in this year. Nāfiʿ, client of ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb. Nāfiʿ, client of ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb, Abū ʿAbd Allāh: ʿAbd Allāh acquired him in one of his military expeditions. He related from him, from Abū Hurayrah, from al-Rubayyiʿ bt. Masʿūd, and others. He was trustworthy. ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz sent him to Egypt to teach them the sunan. He died in this year. Umm al-Banīn bt. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. Marwān. Umm al-Banīn bt. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. Marwān, sister of ʿUmar ؓ: She was one of the generous and noble, and she used to say: "Every people has a passion for something, and my passion is giving." She used to manumit a slave every Friday and to provide a horse in the way of Allah, Mighty and Majestic. From Ḍamrah b. Rabīʿah, from ʿAlī b. Abī Jamīlah, who said: "I heard Umm al-Banīn bt. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz say: 'Ugh to miserliness! If it were a shirt, I would not wear it, and if it were a path, I would not travel it.'" Al-Qurashī said with his chain from Marwān b. Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-Malik, who said: "ʿAzzah entered upon Umm al-Banīn, and she said to her what Kuthayyir says: Every debtor I knew has paid his creditor; but ʿAzzah's creditor is postponed, afflicted. What was this debt, O ʿAzzah? She felt shy and said: 'That is my concern.' She said: 'I had promised him a kiss, but I shrank from it.' Umm al-Banīn said: 'Fulfill it for him, and its sin is upon me.'" Yūsuf said: "A man from Banū Umayyah, called Abū Saʿīd, related to me: 'It reached me that Umm al-Banīn manumitted forty slaves because of that word of hers, and whenever she remembered it she wept and said: Would that I had been struck dumb and had not spoken it.'" She was beautiful, and he was ugly in appearance, black in color. There was no indecency or obscenity between them. He had never seen her nor she him; she only heard of him and he of her. It is said that she vowed that if she saw him she would slaughter a camel. When she saw him, she said: "What a disgrace! What a disgrace!" She never showed him her face except once, and then he recited: On Mayy's face there is a touch of sweetness, and beneath the clothes is shame, if it were visible. He said: She slipped out of her clothes, and he recited: Do you not see that water's taste becomes foul, even if the water's color is white and clear? She said: "Do you want to taste its flavor?" He said: "Yes, by Allah." She said: "You will taste death before you taste it." Then he recited: Oh, the loss of the poetry that persisted and passed with Mayy, and I did not possess the misguidance of my heart. Al-Qāḍī Ibn Khallikān said: "Among his poetry current among people is what he recited: When the winds blow from a direction where Mayy's people dwell, their blowing stirs my heart. A love for which the eyes shed tears; but every soul's love is where its beloved dwells. And he recited at death: O You who seizes the soul from my body when death is present, and forgives sin, push me away from the Fire. And Abū Shākir Maslamah b. Hishām b. ʿAbd al-Malik.
