Chapter mentioning a group of the prophets of the Israelites after Mūsā (peace be upon him)
[ مَنْ كَانَ بَعْدَ إِلْيَاسَ] قَدِ اخْتَلَفَ الْعُلَمَاءُ فِيمَنْ كَانَ بَعْدَ إِلْيَاسَ. فَقَالَ الْحَسَنُ وَوَهْبٌ: نُبِّيَ بَعْدَ إِلْيَاسَ الْيَسَعُ، وَقَدْ عَوَّلْنَا عَلَى ذَلِكَ. وَقَدْ حَكَى أَبُو الْحُسَيْنِ بْنُ الْمُنَادِي: أَنَّ قَوْمًا قَالُوا: بَلْ كَانَ بَعْدَ إِلْيَاسَ يُونُسُ. قَالَ: وَقَالُوا: إِنَّ يُونُسَ بَعْدَ سُلَيْمَانَ، وَأَيُّوبَ بَعْدَ سُلَيْمَانَ أَيْضًا. وَذَكَرَ ابْنُ أَبِي خَيْثَمَةَ أَنَّ أَيُّوبَ كَانَ بَعْدَ سُلَيْمَانَ، وَأَنَّ يُونُسَ بَعْدَ أَيُّوبَ. وَنَحْنُ نَتَخَيَّرُ مِنْ هَذَا الِاخْتِلَافِ فِي التَّرْتِيبِ أَقْرَبَهُ إِلَى الصَّوَابِ. وَاللَّهُ الْمُوَفِّقُ.
Translation
✧ [Those who came after Ilyās] Scholars have differed regarding who came after Ilyās. Al-Ḥasan and Wahb said: After Ilyās, al-Yasaʿ was made a prophet, and we have relied upon that. Abū al-Ḥusayn b. al-Munādī related that a group said: Rather, after Ilyās came Yūnus. He said: They also said that Yūnus came after Sulaymān, and Ayyūb also came after Sulaymān. Ibn Abī Khaythamah mentioned that Ayyūb came after Sulaymān, and that Yūnus came after Ayyūb. We shall choose from this disagreement regarding the order that which is closest to what is correct. And Allah is the One who grants success.
