✧ The dismissal of Ashras from Khurasan and the appointment of al-Junayd In the year one hundred and eleven, Hisham dismissed Ashras b. ʿAbd Allah from Khurasan. The reason for that was that Shaddad b. Khulayd al-Bahili complained about him to Hisham, so he dismissed him and appointed al-Junayd b. ʿAbd al-Rahman over Khurasan. He is al-Junayd b. ʿAbd al-Rahman b. ʿAmr b. al-Harith b. Kharija b. Sinan b. Abi Haritha al-Murri. The reason for his appointment was that he gave as a gift to Umm Hakim bt. Yahya b. al-Hakam, the wife of Hisham, a necklace of jewels, and it pleased Hisham. Then he gave Hisham another necklace as a gift, so he appointed him and carried him on eight post-horses. He arrived in Khurasan with five hundred men and marched to what is beyond the river. With him marched Hattab b. Muhriz al-Sulami, the deputy of Ashras in Khurasan, and they crossed the river. Al-Junayd sent to Ashras while he was fighting the people of Bukhara and al-Sughd: "Reinforce me with cavalry," fearing that he would be cut off before him. Ashras sent to him ʿAmir b. Malik al-Himmani. When ʿAmir was on part of the road, the Turks and the Sughdians confronted him, so he entered a fortified enclosure and fought them at the breach. With him were Ward b. Ziyad b. Adham b. Kulthum, the nephew of al-Aswad b. Kulthum, and Wasil b. ʿAmr al-Qaysi. Wasil and ʿAsim b. ʿUmayr al-Samarqandi went out, and with them were others besides them. They went around until they came from behind the water that was there. Then they gathered reeds and wood and crossed over it. Khaqan was not aware until the takbir came from behind him, and the Muslims charged the Turks, and they fought them and killed a great one of their great men. The Turks were defeated, and ʿAmir marched to al-Junayd. He met him and came along with him. At the vanguard of al-Junayd was ʿUmara b. Huraym. When he reached two parasangs from Baykand, the cavalry of the Turks met him, and he fought them. Al-Junayd and those with him almost perished, but then God gave him victory. He marched until he arrived at the camp. Al-Junayd triumphed and killed the Turks. Khaqan advanced against him, and they met before Ruzman in the land of Samarqand, with Qatan b. Qutayba at the rear of al-Junayd. Al-Junayd captured from the Turks the nephew of Khaqan in this campaign and sent him to Hisham. Al-Junayd had appointed as his deputy in this campaign Mujashshir b. Muzahim al-Sulami over Marw, and he appointed Sawra b. al-Hurr al-Tamimi over Balkh. He sent a delegation to Hisham when he achieved what he did in this direction. Al-Junayd returned to Marw victorious. Khaqan said: "This is a pampered youth who defeated me this year, but I shall destroy him next year." Al-Junayd appointed his governors and appointed none but a Mudari. He appointed Qatan b. Qutayba over Bukhara, al-Walid b. al-Qaʿqaʿ al-ʿAbsi over Herat, Habib b. Murra al-ʿAbsi over his shurta, and over Balkh Muslim b. ʿAbd al-Rahman al-Bahili. Previously, Nasr b. Sayyar had been over it. There was distance between him and the Bahilis because of what had occurred between them at al-Baruqan. Muslim sent to Nasr, and they found him sleeping. They brought him in a shirt without trousers, grabbed by the collar. A shaykh from Mudar said: "You brought him in this state!" So al-Junayd dismissed Muslim from Balkh and appointed Yahya b. Dubayʿa, and he appointed Shaddad b. Khulayd al-Bahili over the kharaj of Samarqand.
