Translation

✧ Those among the notables who died in the year one hundred and nine ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Abī ʿAmmār the Worshipper ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Abī ʿAmmār the Worshipper, resident of Makkah: From al-Zubayr b. Bakkār, who said: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Abī ʿAmmār was of the Banū Jusham and resided in Makkah. He was one of its devoted worshippers, so he was called “the Monk” because of his worship. One day he passed by Salāmah while she was singing, and he stopped and listened to her singing. Her master saw him and invited him to enter upon her, but he refused. He said to him, “Then sit in a place where you hear her singing but do not see her,” and he did. She sang and pleased him. Her master said to him, “Would you like me to transfer her to you?” He refused somewhat, then answered him to that. He looked at her and she pleased him, and he became infatuated with her and she became infatuated with him. He was witty, and he said about her: Umm Salām, if I found from passion other than that which through you I am meeting, Umm Salām, you are my concern and my occupation By the Mighty, the Guardian, the Creator, Umm Salām, I do not remember you but My eyes choke with tears. He said: The people of Makkah learned of that, and they named her Salām al-Qass (Salām of the Monk). One day she said to him, “By God, I love you,” and he said, “By God, I love you.” She said to him, “By God, I would love for you to put your mouth on my mouth.” He said, “By God, I would love that.” She said, “What prevents you? By God, the place is empty.” He said to her, “Woe to you! I heard God Almighty say: ‘Close friends, that Day, will be enemies to one another, except for the righteous.’ (Q 43:67) By God, I hate that the friendship between me and you in this world should become enmity on the Day of Resurrection.” Then he rose, his eyes flowing with tears from love of her, and returned to the path he had been on of asceticism and worship. He would pass by her door every few days and send greetings, and it would be said to him, “Enter,” but he refused. Among what he said about her: If you saw Salāmah, who made me lose my fortitude, with the lute in her lap when she chants Al-Sharīḥabī, al-Gharīḍ, and for the people Maʿbad, you would think them under her lute when she plucks it with her hand. In another narration, when he said to her, “I hate that the friendship between me and you should become enmity on the Day of Resurrection,” she said, “Do you think that our Lord will not accept us if we repent to Him?” He said, “Yes, but I do not feel safe from being taken suddenly.” Then he rose weeping and did not return thereafter, and went back to the asceticism he had been practicing. Muṣʿab al-Zubayrī narrated with his chain from his father, from his grandfather, who said: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Abī ʿAmmār, who at that time was the jurist of the people of the Hijaz, entered upon a slave dealer and became attached to a girl, and his mention of her became well-known until ʿAṭāʾ, Ṭāwūs, and Mujāhid walked to him reproaching him. His answer was: People I sit with blame me concerning you, and I do not care whether blame flies or lands. The news reached ʿAbd Allāh b. Jaʿfar, and he had no concern other than it. He performed the pilgrimage, sent to the girl’s master, and bought her from him for forty thousand. He ordered the overseer of his slave girls to adorn and deck her, and she did. People learned of his arrival and entered upon him. He said, “Why do I not see Ibn Abī ʿAmmār visiting us?” The shaykh was informed and came to him. When he wanted to rise, he asked him to stay seated, and he sat. Ibn Jaʿfar said to him, “What has become of your love for so-and-so?” He said, “My flesh, blood, sinews, marrow, and bones have been mixed with it.” He said, “Would you recognize her if you saw her?” He said: “And I would recognize another,” he said. He said, “I have bought her, and by God, I have not looked at her.” He ordered her brought out, and she was escorted in ornaments and robes. He said, “Is this she?” He said, “Yes, by my father and mother.” He said, “Take her hand, for God has made her yours. Are you pleased?” He said, “Yes, by God, by my father and mother, and beyond pleasure.” Ibn Jaʿfar said to him, “But by God, I am not pleased to give her to you empty-handed. Carry with him, boy, one hundred thousand dirhams so that he will not be concerned about her expenses.” He said: He departed with her and the money. Abū Mijlaz Lāḥiq b. Ḥumayd al-Baṣrī In this year died Abū Mijlaz Lāḥiq b. Ḥumayd al-Baṣrī.
