Translation
✧ Account of the Expedition to Khuttal and Ghūr It is said: In the year one hundred and eight, Asad crossed the river, and the Khāqān came to him, but there was no fighting between them in this expedition. It is also said: He returned defeated from Khuttal. Asad had made it known that he intended to winter at Surkh Darah, so he ordered the people, and they set out. He dispatched his banners and marched on a dark night toward Surkh Darah. The people shouted the takbīr, and he said, “What is the matter with them?” They said, “This is their signal when they return [from a raid].” He said to the crier, “Announce that the commander intends [to attack] the people of Ghūr.” So he proceeded against them, and they fought them for a day and withstood them. A man from the polytheists came out between the two ranks, and Sālim b. Aḥwaz said to Naṣr b. Sayyār, “I am going to charge this infidel; perhaps I will kill him and Asad will be pleased.” He charged him and thrust at him and killed him. Sālim returned and stood, then said to Naṣr, “I am going to make another charge.” He charged and killed another man. Sālim was wounded, and Naṣr said to Sālim, “Stop until I charge them.” He charged until he mingled with the enemy, threw down two men, and returned wounded, saying, “Do you think what we have done will please him? No, may God not be pleased with him!” He said, “No, by God.” A messenger from Asad came to the two of them and said, “The commander says to you both: I have seen your stand and how little you avail the Muslims. May God curse you both.” He said, “Amen, if we ever return to anything like this!” And they withdrew from each other. Then they returned the next day and fought. The polytheists were defeated, the Muslims seized their camp, gained control of the lands, and took captives, slaves, and booty. The people had suffered severe hunger in Khuttal, so Asad sent two rams with a servant of his and said, “Sell them for five hundred dirhams.” When the servant went off, Asad said, “No one will buy them except Ibn al-Shikhkhīr.” He was in the outpost. He entered at evening and saw the two sheep in the market, so he bought them for five hundred. He slaughtered one of them and sent the other to one of his brethren. When the servant told Asad the story, he sent a thousand dirhams to Ibn al-Shikhkhīr.
