Translation
✧ Those of the notables who died in the year one hundred and seven Ismāʿīl b. ʿUbayd, client of ʿAmr b. Ḥazm al-Anṣārī Ismāʿīl b. ʿUbayd, client of ʿAmr b. Ḥazm al-Anṣārī: He transmitted from ʿUmar and Ibn ʿAbbās. He used to reside in Ifrīqiya, and he had devotion and excellence; he drowned in the Sea of the Romans in this year. ʿUbayd Allāh b. al-Mughīra said: I said to Saʿīd b. al-Musayyab: “We have with us a man called Ismāʿīl b. ʿUbayd, one of the devotees; when he hears us mention poetry, he shouts at us.” Ibn al-Musayyab said: “That is a man who practiced the devotion of the non-Arabs.” Aswad b. Kulthūm Aswad b. Kulthūm: From Ḥumayd b. Hilāl, who said: There was a man among us called al-Aswad b. Kulthūm. When he walked, his gaze did not go beyond his feet. He would pass by the women while in the curtained litter at that time there were some of short stature, and perhaps one of them would have put down her garment or her head-cover. When they saw him, he startled them, then they would say: “No, indeed, it is al-Aswad b. Kulthūm.” When he was about to set out on a military expedition, he said: “O God, this soul of mine claims in times of ease that it loves the meeting with You. If it is truthful, grant it that; and if it is lying, then compel it to that. If it dislikes it, then feed my flesh to beasts and birds.” He set out with a cavalry detachment, and they entered a walled garden, and the enemy fell upon them by surprise. They came and took the breach of the wall. Al-Aswad dismounted from his horse and struck it until it galloped off. Then he went out to the water, performed ablution, and prayed. He said: The non-Arabs said: “Thus is the surrender of the Arabs when they surrender.” Then he advanced and fought until he was killed. He said: The commander of the army passed by that walled garden afterward, and it was said to his brother: “If you entered and looked at what remains of your brother’s bones [and his flesh].” He said: “No. My brother made a supplication and it was answered, so I will not interfere in anything of that.” Bukayr b. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Ashajj Bukayr b. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Ashajj, client of Banū Zuhra, a Medinan: Al-Layth b. Saʿd and others transmitted from him. He died in this year. Ḥumayd b. Hilāl, Abū Naṣr al-ʿAdawī Ḥumayd b. Hilāl, Abū Naṣr al-ʿAdawī: He traced hadiths to ʿAbd Allāh b. Mughaffal, Anas, and others, and he was among the jurists. Qatāda used to say: “There is none among the Egyptians higher than Ḥumayd.” From Ḥumayd b. Hilāl, who said: It was mentioned to us that when a man enters Paradise and is formed in the form of the people of Paradise, clothed in their clothing, adorned with their ornaments, and sees his wives, his servants, and his dwellings in Paradise, a surge of joy seizes him; if it were possible for him to die, he would die of joy. Then it is said to him: “Do you see this surge of your joy? Indeed it will remain for you forever.” Ḥassān b. Ḥurayth Ḥassān b. Ḥurayth, Abū al-Sawwār al-ʿAdawī: It is also said his name was Munqidh. He transmitted from ʿAlī and ʿImrān b. Ḥuṣayn. Qatāda transmitted from him. He was of Banū ʿAdī b. Zayd b. Manāt [b. Udd b. Ṭābikha], and likewise Ḥumayd b. Hilāl whom we mentioned before him was of Banū ʿAdī b. Zayd. Likewise ʿUmar b. Ḥabīb the judge al-ʿAdawī. He held the judiciary for al-Rashīd. Likewise Muḥammad b. ʿAmr and Abū Ghassān al-ʿAdawī, who was nicknamed Zayannaj; al-Bukhārī and Muslim cited from him. There are also those called al-ʿAdawī who are traced to ʿAdī of the Anṣār, among them Ḥāritha b. Surāqa and Ḥassān b. Thābit. They are of ʿAdī b. al-Najjār. Sometimes it is said al-ʿAdawī and traced to ʿAdī b. Kaʿb b. Luʾayy, and they are the clan of ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb and his tribe. It is also said al-ʿAdawī and traced to al-ʿAdawiyya, who is their mother, of Banū ʿAdī b. al-Rabāb, among them Zayd b. Murra Abū al-Muʿallā al-Baṣrī; he transmitted from al-Ḥasan. It is also said: al-ʿAdawī traced to ʿAdī of Khuzāʿa, among them Ḥabashiyya al-ʿAdawiyya, wife of Sufyān b. Maʿmar al-Bayāḍī, one of the emigrants to Abyssinia. Abū al-Sawwār was among the scholars, the forbearing, the wise, the ascetics, and the trustworthy. A man insulted him while he was walking silently. When he entered his house, he said to the man: “That is enough for you, if you wish.” Hishām said: Abū al-Sawwār would have a man confront him and revile him, and he would say: “If I am as you said, then indeed I am an evil man.” Sulaymān b. Yasār Sulaymān b. Yasār [Abū Ayyūb], client of Maymūna bt. al-Ḥārith, wife of the Messenger of God ﷺ: He died in this year; it is also said: in the year one hundred and three, at the age of seventy-three.
