✧ The biography of Yazīd b. ʿAbd al-Malik and some of his conduct. He is Yazīd b. ʿAbd al-Malik b. Marwān b. al-Ḥakam b. Abī al-ʿĀṣ b. Umayyah b. ʿAbd Shams b. ʿAbd Manāf, Abū Khālid al-Qurashī al-Umawī, Commander of the Faithful. His mother was ʿĀtikah bt. Yazīd b. Muʿāwiyah. Allegiance was pledged to him for the caliphate after ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz in Rajab of the year one hundred and one, by covenant from his brother Sulaymān that he would be caliph after ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz, may God have mercy on him, on Friday when five nights remained of Rajab. Muḥammad b. Yaḥyā al-Dhuhlī said, with his chain of transmission from al-Zuhrī, who said: A Muslim did not inherit from an infidel, nor an infidel from a Muslim, during the time of the Messenger of God ﷺ, and Abū Bakr, ʿUmar, ʿUthmān, and ʿAlī. When Muʿāwiyah assumed authority, he made the Muslim inherit from the infidel, but did not make the infidel inherit from the Muslim. The caliphs after him followed that. When ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz arose, he returned to the first sunnah, and Yazīd b. ʿAbd al-Malik followed him in that. When Hishām arose, he adopted the sunnah of the caliphs, meaning that he made the Muslim inherit from the infidel. Al-Walīd b. Muslim said, from Ibn Jābir, who said: While we were with Makḥūl, Yazīd b. ʿAbd al-Malik approached, and we made to make room for him. Makḥūl said: Leave him to sit wherever the gathering ends for him; he will learn humility. This Yazīd used to sit much with scholars before he assumed the caliphate. When he assumed it, he resolved to model himself after ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz, but evil companions did not leave him alone, and they made wrongdoing seem fair to him. As Ḥarmalah said, with his chain of transmission from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Zayd b. Aslam, who said: When Yazīd b. ʿAbd al-Malik assumed authority, he said: Conduct yourselves according to the conduct of ʿUmar. He remained thus for forty nights. Then forty shaykhs were brought to him, and they testified to him that the caliphs are subject to no reckoning and no punishment. Some accused him regarding religion, but that is not correct. That was his son al-Walīd b. Yazīd. As for this one, there was no harm in him. ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz wrote to him: To proceed: I think I am only as I am, and I think the matter will devolve to you. Fear God, fear God, with regard to the community of Muḥammad ﷺ. For before long you will die and leave this world to one who will not praise you, and pass to one who will not excuse you. Peace. Yazīd b. ʿAbd al-Malik wrote to his brother Hishām: To proceed: The Commander of the Faithful has learned that you considered his life slow, wished for his death, and sought the caliphate. He wrote at the end of it: Men wish that I die; if I die, that is a path in which I am not alone. They know, if knowledge availed them, that when I die, the transgressor against me is not immortal. His fate runs to an appointed time, and his death will meet him one day without appointment. So say to the one who seeks to succeed the one who has passed: prepare for another like it, for it is as if it already is. Hishām wrote back to him: May God make my day before your day, and my child before your child. There is no good in life after you. Yazīd was one of their young men. One day he said, when he was moved and had Ḥabābah and Sallāmah al-Qass with him: Let me fly. Ḥabābah said: To whom do you leave the community? He said: To you. It was said that one day she sang to him: Between the collarbones and the uvula there is a heat that does not subside and does not go down to cool. He leaned over to fly, and she said: O Commander of the Faithful, we have a need of you. He said: By God, I will fly! She said: To whom do you leave the community and the kingdom? He said: To you, by God! And he kissed her hand. One of his servants went out saying: May your eye be hot; how foolish you are! Yazīd b. ʿAbd al-Malik's love for Ḥabābah. This Yazīd loved Ḥabābah—with doubling of the first bāʾ, though the correct form is without doubling—and her name was al-ʿĀliyah. She was extremely beautiful. He had bought her in the time of his brother Sulaymān b. ʿAbd al-Malik for four thousand dinars from ʿUthmān b. Sahl b. Ḥanīf. His brother Sulaymān said: I have considered placing Yazīd under interdiction. So Yazīd sold her. When the caliphate devolved to him, his wife Saʿdah said to him one day: O Commander of the Faithful, is there anything left in your heart of worldly matters? He said: Yes, Ḥabābah. So his wife sent and bought her for him, dressed her, adorned her, and seated her behind a curtain. She then said to him: O Commander of the Faithful, is there anything left in your heart of this world? He said: Did I not tell you? She said: This is Ḥabābah, and brought her out to him, left him alone with her, and departed from him and her. The slave girl found favor with him, and so too did his wife. One day he said: I desire to be alone with Ḥabābah in a palace for a period of time with no one with us. He did that, and gathered her to himself in a palace. While he was with her in the happiest state and most ease, he threw a pomegranate seed at her—or it is reported: a grape—into her mouth while she was laughing. She choked on it and died. He remained for days kissing her and imbibing her while she was dead, until she began to decompose and stink. Then he ordered her burial. When he buried her, he remained for days at her grave, wandering distractedly. Then he returned to his dwelling, then went back to her grave and stood over it, saying: If the soul forgets you or abandons youthful passion, it is through despair that it forgets you, not through endurance. Every friend who visits me says because of you: this is a skull of today or tomorrow. He heard a slave girl of his recite after her: Enough grief for the wandering, lovesick one is to see the dwellings of the one he loves empty and desolate. He wept, then returned, and did not leave his dwelling until he was carried out on his bier. His illness was consumption, and that was in al-Sawād, the Sawād of al-Urdunn, on Friday when five nights remained of Shaʿbān of this year, meaning the year one hundred and five. When Yazīd died, his death was not known until Sallāmah lamented and said: Do not blame us if we are humble or if we resolve on humility. By my life, I spent my night like one afflicted with a painful disease. Then grief stayed with me, with no one to lie beside me, because of the dreadful event that befell us today. Whenever I see an empty abode, my tears overflow. It is empty of a lord who was not neglectful of us. Then she cried out: Alas for the Commander of the Faithful! And so they learned of his death. The poetry is by one of the Anṣār. The reports of Yazīd with Sallāmah and Ḥabābah are many; this is not the place to mention them. She was called Sallāmah al-Qass because ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī ʿAmmār, one of the Banū Jusham b. Muʿāwiyah b. Bukayr, was a jurist, a devout worshipper, diligent in worship, and he was called al-Qass on account of his worship. One day he passed by the dwelling of her master and heard her singing. He stopped to listen. Her master saw him and said to him: Would you like to look and listen? He refused. He said: I will seat her in a place where you cannot see her, and you will hear her singing. So he entered with him, and she sang to him; her singing pleased him. Then her master brought her out to him, and he became infatuated with her and loved her, and she also loved him; he was a handsome young man. One day in private she said to him: I love you, by God! He said: And I love you, by God! She said: And I would like to kiss you! He said: And I, by God! She said: And I would like to place my belly on your belly! He said: And I, by God! She said: What prevents you? He said: The saying of God, exalted be He: "Friends on that day will be enemies to one another, except the righteous." I dislike that our friendship should end in enmity. Then he rose and left her, and returned to his worship. He composed poems about her, among them: Do you not see her—may God not remove her abode—when she sings in her voice, what she does? She extends the thread of speech, then returns it to a ringing in her voice that reverberates. And he also said about her: Say to this heart: will you see, and will you refrain from Sallāmah today? Would that I were, wherever the journey took her, a companion to Salmā whenever a lute resounds. When she takes up the song, her companion's heart nearly flies to her when he looks. Thus she was called Sallāmah al-Qass for that reason. Yazīd was tall, large-bodied, fair, round-faced, with protruding front teeth, and did not go gray. It is said that he died in al-Jawlān, and it is said in Ḥawrān. His son al-Walīd b. Yazīd prayed over him, aged fifteen. It is said instead that his brother Hishām b. ʿAbd al-Malik prayed over him, and he was the caliph after him. He was carried on the shoulders of men until he was buried between Bāb al-Jābiyah and Bāb al-Ṣaghīr in Damascus. He had made a covenant for the matter after him to his brother Hishām, and after him to his son al-Walīd b. Yazīd. So the people pledged allegiance to Hishām after him.
