Translation

✧ The death of Yazīd b. ʿAbd al-Malik In the year one hundred and five, Yazīd b. ʿAbd al-Malik died, with five days remaining of Shaʿbān, at Arbad in the land of al-Balqāʾ, on Friday, at the age of forty years; it is also said thirty-five years; and other than that is also said. His tenure as caliph was four years, one month, and some days. His kunyah was Abū Khālid, and his illness was consumption. It is said that the cause of his death was that when Ḥabābah died, he grieved intensely over her, so he went out accompanying her funeral procession, and with him was his brother Maslamah b. ʿAbd al-Malik to console and comfort him, but he did not answer him with a single word. It is also said that Yazīd could not bear to ride due to grief and was unable to walk, so he ordered Maslamah, and he prayed over her. It is also said that Maslamah prevented him from that lest people see from him what they would find fault with. When she was buried, he remained after her fifteen days and then died and was buried beside her. It is also said that he remained after her forty days, during which no one entered upon him except once. When he died, his brother Maslamah prayed over him; it is also said his son al-Walīd did, while Hishām b. ʿAbd al-Malik was in Ḥimṣ.
