Translation
✧ Mention of the going forth of ʿUqfān In the days of Yazīd b. ʿAbd al-Malik, and in the year one hundred and five, a Ḥarūrī named ʿUqfān went forth with eighty men. Yazīd wanted to send an army to fight him, but it was said to him: "If he is killed in these lands, the Khawārij will take them as an abode of emigration. The right course is to send to every man among his companions a man from his own people to speak with him and turn him back." So he did that. Their families said to them: "We fear that we will be seized because of you." And they were granted safety, while ʿUqfān remained alone. Yazīd sent his brother to him, and he sought to soften his heart, and he turned him back. When Hishām b. ʿAbd al-Malik assumed authority, he appointed him over the affairs of the disobedient. Then his son came from Khurāsān in anger, so he bound him tightly and sent him to Hishām, who released him to his father and said: "If ʿUqfān had betrayed us, he would have concealed the matter of his son." He appointed ʿUqfān over the alms, and he remained in that post until Hishām died.
