It was said to al-Ḥajjāj: "Their father has never told a lie at all; if you were to send for him and ask him about them." So he sent for him and said: "Where are your two sons?" He said: "They are in the house." He said: "We have pardoned them because of your truthfulness." From al-Ḥārith al-Ghanawī, who said: Ribʿī b. Ḥirāsh swore an oath that his teeth would not part in laughter until he knew where his final abode would be, and he did not laugh except at his death. His brother Ribʿī b. From Yaʿqūb b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Qārī, who said: Muḥammad b. al-Munkadir said: I left Ziyād b. Abī Ziyād while he was arguing with his own self in the mosque, saying: "Sit down; where do you want to go out to, to something better than this mosque? Look at what is in it; do you want to look at the house of so-and-so and so-and-so?" He said: And he would say to his self: "What food do you have, O self, except this bread and oil? And what clothes do you have except these two garments? And what women do you have except this old woman? Would you like to die?" She said: "I will endure this life." ʿAbd Allāh b. Yazīd, Abū Qilābah al-Jarmī: He was a jurist, learned in jurisprudence, and knowledgeable in judicial matters. When he was sought for the judiciary, he fled and fell ill. ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz entered to visit him and said to him: "O Abū Qilābah, be firm and do not let the hypocrites gloat over us." He died in Syria in this year. From Ayyūb al-Sakhtiyānī, who said: Abū Qilābah said to me: Memorize from me three qualities: beware of the doors of the ruler, and of sitting with the people of desires, and stick to your market, for wealth is part of well-being. From ʿUthmān b. al-Haytham, who said: There was a man in Basra from the Banū Saʿīd, and he was one of the commanders of ʿUbayd Allāh b. Ziyād. He fell from the roof and both his legs were broken. Abū Qilābah entered to visit him and said to him: "I hope that it will be a good choice for you." The man said: "O Abū Qilābah, what good choice is there in the breaking of both my legs?" He said: "What God has concealed from you is greater." After three days, a letter from ʿUbayd Allāh b. Ziyād arrived ordering him to go out and fight al-Ḥusayn b. ʿAlī ؓ. He said to the messenger: "You see what has befallen me." Only seven days passed before the news of the killing of al-Ḥusayn arrived. The man said: "May God have mercy on Abū Qilābah; he spoke the truth that it was a good choice for me." ʿĀmir b. Sharāḥīl—and it is said: ʿĀmir b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Sharāḥīl—Abū ʿAmr al-Shaʿbī: He was from the Shaʿb of Hamdān, a Kufan, and his mother was from the captives of Jalūlāʾ. He was born six years into the caliphate of ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb, he and a brother of his as twins. He heard ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib, al-Ḥasan, al-Ḥusayn, ʿAbd Allāh b. Jaʿfar, Ibn ʿAbbās, Ibn ʿUmar, Ibn ʿAmr, Ibn al-Zubayr, Usāmah, Jābir, al-Barāʾ, Anas, Abū Hurayrah, ʿAdī b. Ḥātim, Samurah, ʿAmr b. Ḥurayth, al-Mughīrah, Zayd b. Arqam, and others. He was a mufti in the sciences, a ḥāfiẓ, and trustworthy. He said: "I never wrote black on white, and no man ever narrated a ḥadīth to me except that I memorized it, and I did not like him to repeat it to me. I narrate nothing less than poetry, and if I wished I could recite to you for a month without repeating. I have forgotten of knowledge what, if a man had memorized it, he would have been a scholar by it. Would that I had escaped from that with sufficiency, neither for me nor against me." ʿUmar heard him narrating the military expeditions and said: "It is as if this young man was present with us." Abū Makhlad said: I have not seen anyone more knowledgeable in jurisprudence than al-Shaʿbī. When ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. Marwān received word of al-Shaʿbī's intellect, knowledge, and pleasant company, he wrote to his brother ʿAbd al-Malik to favor him with al-Shaʿbī. He did so and wrote to him: "I favor you with him over myself; he will not stay with you except for a month." ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz was in Egypt, and he stayed with him for about forty days, then he returned him. From ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, nephew of al-Aṣmaʿī, from his uncle, who said: ʿAbd al-Malik b. Marwān sent ʿĀmir al-Shaʿbī to the king of the Byzantines in some matter, and the king deemed him too great. He said to him: "Are you from the household of the king?" He said: "No." When he wanted to return to ʿAbd al-Malik, he entrusted him with a small note and said: "When you return to your master, convey to him everything he needs to know from our side, and give him this note." When al-Shaʿbī returned to ʿAbd al-Malik, he mentioned to him what he needed to mention and rose from his presence. When he went out, he remembered the note and returned, saying: "O Commander of the Faithful, he entrusted me with a note to you that I forgot when I went out; it was the last thing he entrusted me with." He gave it to him and rose. ʿAbd al-Malik read it and ordered him to be brought back, and said: "Do you know what is in this note?" He said: "No." He said: "In it: 'I wonder at the Arabs, how they have made someone other than this man their king.' Do you know why he wrote this to me?" He said: "No." He said: "He envied me because of you, and he wanted to incite me to kill you." Al-Shaʿbī said: "If that were so, O Commander of the Faithful, he would not have deemed me too great." This reached the king of the Byzantines, and he mentioned ʿAbd al-Malik and said: "May his father be for God; by God, I intended nothing but that." Al-Shaʿbī had gone out with the Qurʾān reciters against al-Ḥajjāj, then he entered upon him and apologized, and he accepted his excuse, and he assumed the judiciary. From Zakariyyā b. Yaḥyā, who said: I entered upon al-Shaʿbī while he was complaining, and someone said to him: "How do you find yourself?" He said: "I find myself in pain, exhausted. O God, I seek reward for my soul from You, for it is the dearest of souls to me." He died in this year, according to the majority. It is said: in the year one hundred and seven. Regarding his age, there are two opinions: one is ninety-seven, and the second is eighty-two. In this year died ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Ḥassān b. Thābit al-Anṣārī. In it died Yaḥyā b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b.
