ظَفَرِ الْخَزَرِ بِالْمُسْلِمِينَ وفِي سنة أربع ومائة دَخَلَ جَيْشٌ لِلْمُسْلِمِينَ بِلَادَ الْخَزَرِ مِنْ أَرْمِينِيَّةَ وَعَلَيْهِمْ ثُبَيْتٌ النَّهْرَانِيُّ، فَاجْتَمَعَتِ الْخَزَرُ فِي جَمْعٍ كَثِيرٍ وَأَعَانَهُمْ قُفْجَاقٌ وَغَيْرُهُمْ مِنْ أَنْوَاعِ التُّرْكِ، فَلَقُوا الْمُسْلِمِينَ فِي مَكَانٍ يُعْرَفُ بِمَرْجِ الْحِجَارَةِ، فَاقْتَتَلُوا هُنَالِكَ قِتَالًا شَدِيدًا، فَقُتِلَ مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ بَشَرٌ كَثِيرٌ وَاحْتَوَتِ الْخَزَرُ عَلَى عَسْكَرِهِمْ، وَغَنِمُوا جَمِيعَ مَا فِيهِ، وَأَقْبَلَ الْمُنْهَزِمُونَ إِلَى الشَّامِ فَقَدِمُوا عَلَى يَزِيدَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ وَفِيهِمْ ثُبَيْتٌ، فَوَبَّخَهُمْ يَزِيدُ عَلَى الْهَزِيمَةِ فَقَالَ: يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ مَا جَبُنْتُ وَلَا نَكَبْتُ عَنْ لِقَاءِ الْعَدُوِّ، وَلَقَدْ لَصَقْتُ الْخَيْلَ بِالْخَيْلِ وَالرَّجُلَ بِالرَّجُلِ، وَلَقَدْ طَاعَنْتُ حَتَّى انْقَصَفَ رُمْحِي، وَضَارَبْتُ حَتَّى انْقَطَعَ سَيْفِي، غَيْرَ أَنَّ اللَّهَ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى، يَفْعَلُ مَا يُرِيدُ.
Translation
✧ The Khazar victory over the Muslims In the year 104, a Muslim army entered the land of the Khazars from Armenia under the command of Thubayt al-Nahrānī. The Khazars assembled in a great host, aided by the Qifjāq and others of the Turkish peoples. They met the Muslims at a place known as Marj al-Ḥijārah (the Meadow of Stones), and fought there a fierce battle. Many Muslims were killed, and the Khazars seized their camp, plundering all that was in it. The defeated survivors came to Syria and presented themselves before Yazīd b. ʿAbd al-Malik, among them Thubayt. Yazīd rebuked them for the defeat, whereupon Thubayt said: 'O Commander of the Faithful, I did not show cowardice nor did I hold back from meeting the enemy. I pressed horse against horse and man against man. I thrust with my spear until it shattered, and I struck with my sword until it broke. Yet God, Blessed and Exalted, does what He wills.'
