Translation

✧ The dismissal of Maslama from Iraq and Khurasan and the appointment of Ibn Hubayra And the reason for that was that he governed Iraq and Khurasan, but he did not send up anything of the land tax; and Yazīd b. ʿAbd al-Malik was ashamed to dismiss him, so he wrote to him: "Appoint a deputy over your province and come." It was said that Maslama consulted ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. Ḥātim b. al-Nuʿmān about going to see Yazīd to visit him. He said: "Is it out of longing for him? Your last meeting with him was recent." He said: "There is no avoiding it." He said: "Then do not leave your province until you meet the governor appointed over it." So Maslama set out, and ʿUmar b. Hubayra al-Fazārī met him in Iraq riding post mounts. He asked him about his coming, and ʿUmar said: "The Commander of the Faithful sent me regarding the seizure of the wealth of the Banū al-Muhallab." When he left him, Maslama summoned ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. Ḥātim and told him the news of Ibn Hubayra, and he said: "I told you." Maslama said: "He has come for the seizure of the wealth of the family of al-Muhallab." He said: "This is stranger than the first: that Ibn Hubayra should be over al-Jazīra, then be dismissed from it, and be sent to seize the wealth of the Banū al-Muhallab, and no letter was written with him to you!" It was not long before the dismissal of Ibn Hubayra's governors and harshness against them reached him. Then al-Farazdaq said: "The mules departed with Maslama in the evening, so graze, Fazāra, for there is no pasture for you there. Ibn Bishr and Ibn ʿAmr before him were dismissed, and the brother of Herat for the like of it is expectant." By Ibn Bishr he meant ʿAbd al-Malik b. Bishr b. Marwān; by Ibn ʿAmr, Muḥammad of the Mole; and by the brother of Herat, Saʿīd Khudhayna. (As for the beginning of Ibn Hubayra's affair until he governed Iraq): He came from the desert, from among the Banū Fazāra, and he was enlisted as a stipendiary soldier under one of the war governors, and he used to say: "I hope that days will not pass until I govern Iraq." He marched with ʿAmr b. Muʿāwiya al-ʿUqaylī on the expedition against the Byzantines. A magnificent horse was brought to him, except that it could not be ridden, so he said: "Whoever rides it, it is his." ʿUmar b. Hubayra stood up and moved away from the horse, then he came forward until he was where the horse's legs could reach him if it kicked; he leaped and landed on its saddle, and took the horse. When Muṭarrif b. al-Mughīra b. Shuʿba renounced al-Ḥajjāj, ʿUmar b. Hubayra marched among the army that fought him from al-Rayy. When the two armies met, Ibn Hubayra joined Muṭarrif showing that he was with him; then when the men were in flight, he was one of those who killed him and took his head. It was said that another killed him and he took his head. He brought it to ʿAdī, who gave him money, and he sent him to al-Ḥajjāj with the head. Al-Ḥajjāj sent him on to ʿAbd al-Malik, and he granted him a fief in Barza, which is a village near Damascus. He returned to al-Ḥajjāj, and he sent him to Kardam b. Marthad al-Fazārī to recover from him some money. He took it from him and fled to ʿAbd al-Malik, saying: "I seek refuge with God and with the Commander of the Faithful from al-Ḥajjāj, for I killed his paternal cousin Muṭarrif b. al-Mughīra, and I brought his head to the Commander of the Faithful. Then I returned, and he wanted to kill me, and I am not safe from his attributing to me some matter that would destroy me." He said: "You are under my protection." So he stayed with him. Al-Ḥajjāj wrote about him to ʿAbd al-Malik, mentioning his taking the money and his flight. He said to him: "Leave him alone." One of the sons of ʿAbd al-Malik married a daughter of al-Ḥajjāj, and Ibn Hubayra used to send presents to her, treat her kindly, and make things easy for her. She wrote to her father praising him, and al-Ḥajjāj wrote to him ordering him to bring his needs to him, and his standing in Syria became great. When ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz became caliph, he appointed him over al-Jazīra. When Yazīd b. ʿAbd al-Malik became caliph, and Ibn Hubayra saw the sway that Ḥabāba had over him, he kept sending gifts to her and to Yazīd b. ʿAbd al-Malik. She interceded for him for the governorship of Iraq, and Yazīd appointed him. Between Ibn Hubayra and al-Qaʿqāʿ b. Khulayd al-ʿAbsī there was mutual envy. Al-Qaʿqāʿ said: "Who can contend with Ibn Hubayra? Ḥabāba by night and his gifts by day!" When Ḥabāba died, al-Qaʿqāʿ said: "Come now, for Ḥabāba is dead; contend with me with all you have, and let the high places and the shoulders bring you forward. Did it deceive you that Ḥabāba once supplied you? Then look to what you are going to do." in some verses. One day there was talk between him and al-Qaʿqāʿ, and al-Qaʿqāʿ said to him: "O son of the stinking one, who advanced you?" He said: "You and your people were advanced by the posteriors of singing girls, and I was advanced by the points of spears." Al-Qaʿqāʿ was silent. He meant that ʿAbd al-Malik advanced them when he married among them, for the mother of al-Walīd and Sulaymān, the two sons of ʿAbd al-Malik b. Marwān, was an ʿAbsī woman.
