The Year 102
Translation
✧ The Death of Ḥayyān al-Nabaṭī Mention has already been made of Ḥayyān’s affair in what came before, at the killing of Qutaybah, and that he rose to prominence and took precedence in Khurāsān. When Sawrah b. al-Ḥurr said to him, “O Nabaṭī,” and Ḥayyān answered him, he said, “May God make your face Nabaṭī,” as has already been mentioned just now, Sawrah bore a grudge against him for that. He said to Saʿīd Khudhaynah, “This slave is the most hostile of people to the Arabs and the governor. He corrupted Khurāsān against Qutaybah, and he is ready to leap upon you and corrupt Khurāsān for you, then fortify himself in one of these fortresses.” Saʿīd said, “Do not let anyone hear this.” Then in his assembly he called for milk, having ordered gold to be ground and thrown into the milk that was in Ḥayyān’s vessel, and Ḥayyān drank it. Then Saʿīd rode off with the people with him for four parasangs, then returned. Ḥayyān lived four days and died. It was said that he did not die this year.
