The Year 101

Translation

✧ The Death of Muḥammad b. Marwān In the year one hundred and one, Muḥammad b. Marwān b. al-Ḥakam, the brother of ʿAbd al-Malik, died. He had governed al-Jazīrah, Armīniyyah, and Adharbayjān, and he raided the Byzantines and the people of Armīniyyah several times. He was brave and strong, and ʿAbd al-Malik envied him for that. When matters became settled for ʿAbd al-Malik, he showed what was in his heart toward him, so Muḥammad prepared to travel to Armīniyyah. When he bade farewell to ʿAbd al-Malik, he asked him about the reason for his departure, and he said, reciting: You will not see the expulsion of a free man as being like attaching some disgrace to him. If we were together in one place, I would run while you are unsteady in the reins. Then ʿAbd al-Malik said to him: I adjure you to stay, for by Allah, you will not see from me what you dislike. And he was reconciled with him. When al-Walīd wanted to remove him, he sought someone to take his place, but no one advanced against him except Maslamah b. ʿAbd al-Malik.
