The Year 101
( إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَبْعَثُ لِهَذِهِ الْأُمَّةِ عَلَى رَأْسِ كُلِّ مِائَةِ سَنَةٍ مَنْ يُجَدِّدُ لَهَا أَمْرَ دِينِهَا ) وَهُوَ ذِكْرُنَا فِي " دَلَائِلِ النُّبُوَّةِ " الْحَدِيثَ الَّذِي رَوَاهُ أَبُو دَاوُدَ فِي سُنَنِهِ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَبْعَثُ لِهَذِهِ الْأُمَّةِ عَلَى رَأْسِ كُلِّ مِائَةِ سَنَةٍ مَنْ يُجَدِّدُ لَهَا أَمْرَ دِينِهَا. فَقَالَ جَمَاعَةٌ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْعِلْمِ مِنْهُمْ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ حَنْبَلٍ فِيمَا ذَكَرَهُ ابْنُ الْجَوْزِيِّ وَغَيْرُهُ: إِنَّ عُمَرَ بْنَ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ كَانَ عَلَى رَأْسِ الْمِائَةِ الْأُولَى. وَقَالَ آخَرُونَ: هُوَ مِنْ جُمْلَةِ مَنْ جَدَّدَ اللَّهُ بِهِ أَمْرَ الدِّينِ عَلَى رَأْسِ الْمِائَةِ الْأُولَى، وَإِنْ كَانَ هُوَ أَوْلَى مَنْ دَخَلَ فِي ذَلِكَ وَأَحَقَّ ; لِإِمَامَتِهِ، وَعُمُومِ وِلَايَتِهِ، وَاجْتِهَادِهِ وَقِيَامِهِ فِي تَنْفِيذِ الْحَقِّ، فَقَدْ كَانَتْ سِيرَتُهُ شَبِيهَةً بِسِيرَةِ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ وَكَانَ كَثِيرًا مَا يَتَشَبَّهُ بِهِ.
Translation
✧ (Indeed, Allah sends for this community at the beginning of every hundred years one who will renew for it the matter of its religion) This is our mention in “Proofs of Prophethood” of the hadith narrated by Abū Dāwūd in his Sunan, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Indeed, Allah sends for this community at the beginning of every hundred years one who will renew for it the matter of its religion.” A group of the people of knowledge, among them Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal, as mentioned by Ibn al-Jawzī and others, said: ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz was at the beginning of the first century. Others said: He is among those through whom Allah renewed the matter of the religion at the beginning of the first century, even though he is the most worthy and most deserving of entering into that, because of his leadership, the comprehensiveness of his authority, his striving, and his standing in carrying out the truth, for his conduct was like the conduct of ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb, and he often sought to resemble him.
