✧ The escape of Ibn al-Muhallab — In the year one hundred and one. There occurred the escape of Yazīd b. al-Muhallab from prison when he learned of the illness of ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz. He arranged with his servants to meet him with horses in a certain place; it is said, with camels belonging to him. Then he left his place of confinement accompanied by a group of people and his wife ʿĀtikah bt. al-Furāt al-ʿĀmiriyyah. When his servants came to him, he mounted his riding camels and traveled. He wrote to ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz: 'By God, I left your prison only when I learned of your illness. Had I hoped for your life, I would not have left, but I feared Yazīd b. ʿAbd al-Malik, for he threatens me with death.' Yazīd b. ʿAbd al-Malik used to say: 'If I am given authority, I will surely cut off a piece of Yazīd b. al-Muhallab.' That was because when Ibn al-Muhallab was appointed over Iraq, he punished his in-laws, the family of Abū ʿUqayl, who were the household of al-Ḥajjāj b. Yūsuf al-Thaqafī. Yazīd b. ʿAbd al-Malik was married to the daughter of Muḥammad b. Yūsuf, the brother of al-Ḥajjāj, and he had from her his son al-Walīd b. Yazīd, the profligate, the one who was killed. It is said the reason for their torture was that when Sulaymān b. ʿAbd al-Malik became caliph, he sought the family of Abū ʿUqayl, seized them, and handed them over to Yazīd b. al-Muhallab to extract their wealth. So he tortured them. Ibn al-Muhallab sent to al-Balqāʾ, one of the districts of Damascus, where the treasuries and family of al-Ḥajjāj b. Yūsuf were kept, and he had them and what was with them brought to him. Among those brought was the mother of al-Ḥajjāj, the wife of Yazīd b. ʿAbd al-Malik (it is said: rather, a sister of hers), and he tortured her. Yazīd b. ʿAbd al-Malik went to Ibn al-Muhallab at his residence and interceded for her, but Ibn al-Muhallab did not accept his intercession. He said: 'Whatever you have assessed against her, I will bear it.' But Ibn al-Muhallab did not accept that from him. Then Yazīd said to Ibn al-Muhallab: 'By God, if I am given any authority, I will surely cut off a limb of yours!' Ibn al-Muhallab replied: 'And by God, if that happens, I will surely cast at you a hundred thousand swords.' So Yazīd b. ʿAbd al-Malik bore what was assessed upon her, and it was a hundred thousand dinars—it is said more than that. When ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz learned that Yazīd b. al-Muhallab had escaped from prison, he said: 'O God, if he intends evil for this community, then suffice them against his evil and turn his plot back upon his own throat.' Yazīd passed on his way by al-Hudhayl b. Zufar b. al-Ḥārith, whom he feared. Al-Hudhayl was not aware until Yazīd had entered. He called for milk and drank it. Al-Hudhayl felt ashamed before him and offered him his horses and other things, but Yazīd did not take anything from him. Al-Wāqidī said: He only escaped from the prison of ʿUmar after his death, ؓ.
