Translation
✧ Those of the notables who died in the year one hundred Busr b. Saʿīd, client of the Ḥaḍramīs Busr b. Saʿīd, client of the Ḥaḍramīs: He narrated from Zayd b. Thābit, Saʿd b. Abī Waqqāṣ, Abū Hurayrah, and Abū Saʿīd. Busr was a trustworthy man among the devoted worshippers and the ascetics who renounced the world. He died in al-Madīnah at the age of seventy-eight, and he left no shroud. Ḥanash b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAmr, Abū Rashdīn al-Ṣanʿānī Ḥanash b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAmr, Abū Rashdīn al-Ṣanʿānī: He was with ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib in al-Kūfah, and he came to Egypt after the killing of ʿAlī. He raided the Maghrib with Ruwayfiʿ b. Thābit and raided al-Andalus with Mūsā b. Nuṣayr. He was among those who rose with Ibn al-Zubayr against ʿAbd al-Malik, so he was brought to ʿAbd al-Malik in bonds, and he pardoned him. ʿAbd al-Malik, when he raided the Maghrib with Muʿāwiyah b. Khadīj, stayed with him in Ifrīqiyah in the year fifty, so he remembered that for him. Ḥanash was the first to oversee the tithes of Ifrīqiyah in Islam. When he finished his evening prayer and his needs and wanted to sleep, he lit the lamp, placed the muṣḥaf before him, and a vessel containing water. When drowsiness came over him, he took the water, and when he was puzzled by a verse, he looked in the muṣḥaf. He died in Ifrīqiyah in this year. ʿAbd al-Malik b. ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ʿAbd al-Malik b. ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz: He died during the caliphate of his father, and he was righteous. From ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz, who said: When my father ʿUmar assumed the caliphate and addressed the people, he went to take a midday nap. His son ʿAbd al-Malik came to him and said: "What do you intend to do?" He said: "O my son, I am taking a nap." He said: "You take a nap and do not restore the injustices?" He said: "O my son, I stayed up last night concerning the affair of your uncle Sulaymān, so when I have prayed the noon prayer, I will restore the injustices." He said: "O Commander of the Faithful, who guarantees you that you will live until noon?" He said: "Come close to me, O my son." He came close to him, so he embraced him and kissed him between his eyes and said: "Praise be to God who brought forth from my loins one who helps me in my religion." Then he went out and did not nap. From ʿĀṣim b. Abī Bakr b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. Marwān: He came as a delegate to Sulaymān b. ʿAbd al-Malik. He said: I lodged with ʿAbd al-Malik b. ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz while he was unmarried. I was with him in his house. When we had prayed the evening prayer and each man of us retired to his bed, when he thought that we had slept, he went to the lamp and extinguished it while I was watching him. Then he began to pray until sleep had gone. He said: I awoke while he was reciting: "Have you considered if We let them enjoy themselves for years, then there comes to them what they were promised, what will their enjoyment avail them?" Then he wept, then he returned to it, then he wept, and he did not cease doing so until I said, "Weeping will kill him." When I saw that, I said: "Glory be to God and praise be to God," like one waking from sleep, to cut that off from him. When he heard me, he fell silent, and I heard no sound from him. From Ziyād b. Abī Ḥassān: He witnessed ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz when he buried his son ʿAbd al-Malik. He stood upright, and the people surrounded him, and he said: "By God, O my son, you were dutiful to your father. By God, since God gave you to me, I have not ceased to be delighted with you. No, by God, I was never more delighted nor more hopeful for my share from God than with you since I placed you in the abode to which God has brought you. May He have mercy on you, forgive your sin, and reward you for the best of your deeds, and have mercy on every intercessor who intercedes for you besides me, present or absent. We accept God's decree and submit to His command. Praise be to God, Lord of the worlds." Then he departed. ʿImrān b. Milḥān, Abū Rajāʾ al-ʿUṭāridī ʿImrān b. Milḥān, Abū Rajāʾ al-ʿUṭāridī: From Yūsuf b. ʿAṭiyyah, from his father, who said: I entered upon Abū Rajāʾ al-ʿUṭāridī, and he said: The Prophet ﷺ was sent while we were at a watering place of ours, and we had a round idol. We loaded it on a camel saddle and moved from that watering place to another. We passed by a sandy tract, and the stone slipped and fell into the sand and disappeared in it. When we returned to the watering place, we missed the stone, so we went back in search of it, and there it was in sand, having disappeared, so we extracted it. That was the beginning of my Islam. I said: "A god that cannot protect itself from dust into which it disappears is an evil god; even a she-goat protects her vulva with her udder." Then I returned to al-Madīnah after the Messenger of God ﷺ had died. Ibn al-Jawzī, may God have mercy on him, said: Abū Rajāʾ al-ʿUṭāridī narrated from ʿUmar and Ibn ʿAbbās, and he led his people in prayer for forty years. He died during the caliphate of ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz. Sālim b. Abī al-Jaʿd al-Ashjaʿī Sālim b. Abī al-Jaʿd al-Ashjaʿī, their client, the Kūfan, brother of Ziyād, ʿAbd Allāh, ʿUbayd Allāh, ʿImrān, and Muslim. He was a noble Successor. He narrated from Thawbān, Jābir, ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmar, ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAmr, al-Nuʿmān b. Bashīr, and others. Qatādah, al-Aʿmash, and others narrated from him. He was trustworthy, noble, and eminent. He died in this year according to the well-known view. Abū Umāmah b. Sahl b. Ḥunayf Abū Umāmah b. Sahl b. Ḥunayf the Anṣārī, the Awsī, the Madanī. He was born during the lifetime of the Prophet ﷺ and saw him. He narrated from his father, ʿUmar, ʿUthmān, Zayd b. Thābit, Muʿāwiyah, and Ibn ʿAbbās. Al-Zuhrī, Abū Ḥāzim, and a group narrated from him. Al-Zuhrī said: He was among the elite of the Anṣār and their scholars, and among the sons of those who witnessed Badr. Yūsuf b. al-Mājishūn said, from ʿUtbah b. Muslim: The last outing that ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān ؓ made to the Friday prayer, the people pelted him with stones and came between him and the prayer, and Abū Umāmah b. Sahl b. Ḥunayf prayed with the people that day. They said: He died in the year one hundred. And God knows best. Abū al-Zāhiriyah Ḥudayr b. Kurayb al-Ḥimṣī Abū al-Zāhiriyah Ḥudayr b. Kurayb al-Ḥimṣī A noble Successor. He heard Abū Umāmah Ṣuday b. ʿAjlān and ʿAbd Allāh b. Busr. It is said that he met Abū al-Dardāʾ, but the correct view is that his narration from him and from Ḥudhayfah is mursal. A group of the people of his town narrated from him, and Ibn Maʿīn and others declared him trustworthy. Among the strangest things narrated from him is the statement of Qutaybah: Shihāb b. Khirāsh narrated to us, from Ḥumayd b. Abī al-Zāhiriyah, who said: I dozed off on the rock of the Bayt al-Maqdis, and the custodians came and locked the door on me. I did not wake except at the glorification of the angels, so I leapt up in terror, and behold, the angels were in rows, so I entered with them into the row. He was the last to see the Prophet ﷺ to die, by consensus. He narrated from the Prophet ﷺ that he saw him touching the corner with his staff, and he mentioned the description of the Prophet ﷺ. He said: "The bereavement of a barren old woman and a childless old man." He said: "How is your love for him?" He said: "Like the love of the mother of Moses for Moses, and to God I complain of shortcoming." It is said that he reached eight years of the life of the Prophet ﷺ, and he died in the year one hundred. It is also said: the year one hundred and seven, and it is said: the year one hundred and ten. And God knows best.
