The Year 100 of the Prophetic Hijrah
وفِي سنة مائة من الهجرة أَمْرَ عُمَرُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ أَهْلَ طُرَنْدَةَ بِالْقُفُولِ عَنْهَا إِلَى مَلَطْيَةَ ، وَطُرَنْدَةَ وَاغِلَةٌ فِي الْبِلَادِ الرُّومِيَّةِ مِنْ مَلَطْيَةَ بِثَلَاثِ مَرَاحِلَ، وَكَانَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ قَدْ أَسْكَنَهَا الْمُسْلِمِينَ بَعْدَ أَنْ غَزَاهَا سَنَةَ ثَلَاثٍ وَثَمَانِينَ، وَمَلَطْيَةُ يَوْمَئِذٍ خَرَابٌ، وَكَانَ يَأْتِيهِمْ جُنْدٌ مِنَ الْجَزِيرَةِ يُقِيمُونَ عِنْدَهُمْ إِلَى أَنْ يَنْزِلَ الثَّلْجُ، وَيَعُودُونَ إِلَى بِلَادِهِمْ، فَلَمْ يَزَالُوا كَذَلِكَ إِلَى أَنْ وَلِيَ عُمَرُ، فَأَمَرَهُمْ بِالْعَوْدِ إِلَى مَلَطْيَةَ، وَأَخْلَى طُرَنْدَةَ خَوْفًا عَلَى الْمُسْلِمِينَ مِنَ الْعَدِوِّ، وَأَخْرَبَ طُرَنْدَةَ، وَاسْتَعْمَلَ عَلَى مَلَطْيَةَ جَعُونَةَ بْنَ الْحَارِثِ أَحَدَ بَنِي عَامِرِ بْنِ صَعْصَعَةَ.
Translation
✧ In the year one hundred of the Hijrah, ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ordered the people of Ṭurandah to withdraw from it to Malaṭyah. Ṭurandah lies deep in the Byzantine lands, three stages from Malaṭyah. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAbd al-Malik had settled the Muslims there after he raided it in the year eighty-three, when Malaṭyah was in ruins. A military detachment from al-Jazīrah used to come to them and stay with them until the snow fell, then return to their own lands. They remained thus until ʿUmar took office; he ordered them to return to Malaṭyah, evacuated Ṭurandah out of fear for the Muslims from the enemy, destroyed Ṭurandah, and appointed over Malaṭyah Jaʿūnah b. al-Ḥārith, one of the Banū ʿĀmir b. Ṣaʿṣaʿah.
