The Year 97

Translation

✧ Then the year ninety-seven began. The killing of ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. Mūsā b. Nuṣayr. The reason for his killing was that his father had appointed him over al-Andalus when he returned to Syria, and he controlled it, put its affairs in order, protected its frontiers, and in his governorship conquered cities that had remained after his father. He was good and virtuous. He married the wife of Roderic, and she gained favor with him and prevailed over him. She induced him to make his companions and subjects prostrate themselves to him when they entered upon him, as had been done for her husband Roderic. He said to her, "This is not part of our religion." She kept at him until he ordered a low door to be opened for the hall in which he sat, so that when one of them entered through it he bent his head, becoming like one bowing. She accepted this, and it became like prostration in her view. She said to him, "Now you have joined the kings. It remains for me to make you a crown from the gold and pearls I have." He refused, but she kept at him until he did it. This became apparent to the Muslims, and it was said that he had become a Christian. They noticed the door and rose against him and killed him at the end of the year ninety-seven. It is also said that Sulaymān b. ʿAbd al-Malik sent to the troops ordering his killing when he was angry with his father Mūsā b. Nuṣayr. They entered upon him while he was in the prayer niche, and he had prayed the dawn prayer reciting the Fātiḥa and Sūrat al-Wāqiʿa. They struck him with swords in a single blow, took his head, and sent it to Sulaymān. Sulaymān showed it to his father, who bore the calamity with fortitude and said, "Congratulations to him on martyrdom. By God, you have killed a man who fasted much and prayed much." They counted this among the slips of Sulaymān. According to this account, his killing was at the end of the year ninety-eight. Then Sulaymān appointed al-Ḥurr b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Thaqafī over al-Andalus, and he remained its governor until ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz became caliph and dismissed him.
