غَزْوَةِ الشَّاشِ قِيلَ: وَفِي هَذِهِ السَّنَةِ بَعَثَ الْحَجَّاجُ جَيْشًا مِنَ الْعِرَاقِ إِلَى قُتَيْبَةَ فَغَزَا بِهِمْ، فَفَتَحَ مُدُنًا وَأَقَالِيمَ كَثِيرَةً، فَلَمَّا كَانَ بِالشَّاشِ أَوْ بِكَشَّ مَاهَانَ أَتَاهُ مَوْتُ الْحَجَّاجِ فِي شَوَّالٍ مِنْهَا، فَغَمَّهُ ذَلِكَ وَتَمَثَّلَ يَقُولُ: لَعَمْرِي لَنِعْمَ الْمَرْءُ مِنْ آلِ جَعْفَرٍ بِحَوْرَانَ أَمْسَى أَعَلَقَتْهُ الْحَبَائِلُ فَإِنْ تَحْيَ لَا أَمْلَلْ حَيَاتِي وَإِنْ تَمُتْ فَمَا فِي حَيَاةٍ بَعْدَ مَوْتِكَ طَائِلُ وَرَجَعَ إِلَى مَرْوَ وَتَفَرَّقَ بالنَّاسِ، فَأَتَاهُ كِتَابُ الْوَلِيدِ: قَدْ عَرَفَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ بَلَاءَكَ وَجِدَّكَ وَاجْتِهَادَكَ فِي جِهَادِ أَعْدَاءِ الْمُسْلِمِينَ، وَأَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ رَافِعُكَ وَصَانِعٌ بِكَ الَّذِي يَجِبُ لَكَ، فَالْمُمْ مَغَازِيَكَ، وَانْتَظِرْ ثَوَابَ رَبِّكَ، وَلَا تَغِبْ عَنْ أَمِيرِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ كُتُبُكَ حَتَّى كَأَنِّي أَنْظُرُ إِلَى بَلَائِكَ وَالثَّغْرَ الَّذِي أَنْتَ فِيهِ.
Translation
✧ The Raid of al-Shāsh It was said: And in this year al-Ḥajjāj sent an army from Iraq to Qutaybah, and he raided with them, and he conquered many cities and regions. When he was at al-Shāsh, or at Kashsh Māhān, the death of al-Ḥajjāj came to him in Shawwāl of that year, and that grieved him, and he quoted, saying: By my life, what an excellent man from the family of Jaʿfar was he, who at Ḥawrān has become entangled by the snares. If you live, I shall not weary of my life; and if you die, there is no profit in life after your death. And he returned to Marw and dispersed the people. Then the letter of al-Walīd came to him: 'The Commander of the Faithful has recognized your trial, your earnestness, and your striving in fighting the enemies of the Muslims. The Commander of the Faithful will raise you and do for you what is due to you, so persist in your campaigns, and await the reward of your Lord, and let not your letters be absent from the Commander of the Faithful, until it is as if I see your trial and the frontier where you are.'
