✧ The Peace of Khwārizm Shāh and the Conquest of Khām Jurd In the year ninety-three, Khwārizm Shāh wrote to Qutaybah inviting him to make peace, and to give him cities from his country, and to hand over to him much wealth and many slaves. The reason for that was that the king of Khwārizm was weak, and his brother Khurrazād, who was younger than him, had overcome him in his affairs. Whenever he learned that anyone attached to the king had a slave girl, wealth, a mount, a daughter, a sister, or a beautiful wife, he would send to him and take it from him. No one could prevent him, not even the king. When it was said to the king, he would say: 'I cannot prevail against him,' while he was inwardly enraged at him. When that had gone on too long for him, he wrote to Qutaybah inviting him to his land in order to surrender it to him. He stipulated that he hand over to him his brother and all who opposed him, so that he might judge among them as he saw fit. None of his marzbāns learned of that. Qutaybah agreed to what he requested, prepared for the campaign, and let it be known that he intended to attack al-Ṣughd. He marched from Marw. Khwārizm Shāh assembled his troops and his dihqāns and said: 'Qutaybah intends al-Ṣughd and is not raiding you. So come, let us enjoy ourselves in this spring of ours.' They turned to drinking and enjoyment, and before they knew it, Qutaybah had encamped in Hizārasb. Khwārizm Shāh said to his companions: 'What do you think?' They said: 'We think we should fight him.' He said: 'But I do not think so, because those stronger than us and more formidable have been unable to withstand him. Rather, I will divert him with something I pay him.' They agreed to that. Khwārizm Shāh marched and encamped at the City of the Elephant, beyond the river, which was the most fortified of his lands, while Qutaybah had not crossed the river. Khwārizm Shāh sent to him and made peace with him for ten thousand head, eye, and goods, and on condition that he help him against Khām Jurd. Qutaybah accepted that. It is said: he made peace with him for a hundred thousand head. Then Qutaybah sent his brother ʿAbd al-Raḥmān to Khām Jurd, who had been raiding Khwārizm Shāh. He fought him, and ʿAbd al-Raḥmān killed him and took possession of his land. He brought four thousand captives from them, and Qutaybah killed them. Qutaybah handed over to Khwārizm Shāh his brother and those who opposed him, and he killed them and gave their wealth to Qutaybah.
