Translation
✧ In the year ninety-three, al-ʿAbbās b. al-Walīd conducted a military expedition and conquered Sebaste, and in it Marwān b. al-Walīd raided the Byzantines until he reached Khanjarah. And in it the people of Ifrīqiya suffered drought and were afflicted with severe barrenness, so Mūsā b. Nuṣayr went out with them to pray for rain, and he continued supplicating until midday. When he wanted to descend from the pulpit, it was said to him: 'Will you not supplicate for the Commander of the Faithful?' He said: 'This is not the place for that.' Then God gave them abundant rain. ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz flogged Khubayb b. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zubayr with fifty lashes, and in it ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz flogged Khubayb b. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zubayr with fifty lashes, and it was said: one hundred lashes, on the order of al-Walīd b. ʿAbd al-Malik to that effect, and he poured over his head a waterskin of cold water on a winter's day, and stood him at the gate of the mosque, and he remained for a day and died. The reason was that Khubayb reported from the Messenger of God ﷺ that he said: 'When the Banū Abī al-ʿĀṣ reach thirty men, they will take God's servants as chattel and God's wealth as a thing to be passed around.' And from al-Zubayr b. Bakkār who said: My uncle Muṣʿab b. ʿAbd Allāh narrated to me, he said: Khubayb had met the scholars and met Kaʿb al-Aḥbār, and read the scriptures, and he was one of the devout worshippers. Our companions and others who met him mention that he used to know a great deal of knowledge whose aspect and method they did not recognize, resembling what people claim of the sciences of the stars. My uncle Muṣʿab said: And I was told from a freedman of his maternal aunt Umm Hāshim bt. Manẓūr called Yaʿlā b. ʿUqba, he said: I was walking with him while he was talking to himself when he stopped and then said: 'He asked for a little and was given much, and he asked for much and was given a little, and he stabbed him and threw him down and killed him.' Then he turned to me and said: 'ʿAmr b. Saʿīd has been killed this very hour,' and then he went on. And they found that on that day ʿAmr b. Saʿīd was killed. He has things like this that they mention, and God knows best what they are. And he was long in silence and little in speech. And ʿUmar had removed him from the mosque when his pain became severe, and he regretted what he had done, so the family of al-Zubayr moved him to one of their houses. My uncle Muṣʿab said: And Muṣʿab b. ʿUthmān informed me that they moved him to the house of ʿUmar b. Muṣʿab b. al-Zubayr, and they gathered around him until he died. While they were sitting, al-Mājishūn came and asked permission to enter while Khubayb was covered with his garment. Al-Mājishūn used to be with ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz during his governorship over Madinah. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUrwa said: 'Give him permission.' When he entered, he said: 'Your companion was in doubt about his death; uncover him for him.' So they uncovered him, and when al-Mājishūn saw him, he left. Al-Mājishūn said: I went to the house of Marwān and knocked on the door, and entered and found ʿUmar like a woman in labour, standing up and sitting down. He said to me: 'What news do you have?' I said: 'The man has died.' He fell to the ground in alarm, then raised his head saying 'we belong to God and to Him we return,' and it did not cease to be recognized in him until he died. So he asked to be excused from Madinah and refused the governorship. And my uncle narrated to me, he said: Hārūn b. Abī ʿUbayd Allāh b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Muṣʿab narrated to me, he said: I heard our companions say: ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz distributed among us a distribution during his caliphate with which he singled us out, and the people said: 'The blood money for Khubayb.' And ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz after the death of Khubayb was in severe fear and did not feel safe, and when he was given good tidings of anything pertaining to the Hereafter, he would say: 'And how, when Khubayb is in my path?' And in another narration he would say: 'This is if Khubayb is not in the path,' then he would cry out like a bereaved woman. And when he was praised, he would say: 'Khubayb, and what of Khubayb! If I escape from him, then I am well.' And he did not cease to be over Madinah until he had flogged Khubayb and he died, then he resigned, and grief and fear mounted him from that time, and he began to strive in worship and weeping. That was a slip and a stumble from him, but much good resulted for him because of it: worship, weeping, grief, fear, benevolence, justice, charity, piety, manumission, and other than that.
