Translation

✧ The opening of al-Maṣṣīṣah Then the year eighty-four began Al-Wāqidī said: In it ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAbd al-Malik b. Marwān opened al-Maṣṣīṣah. The raid of Muḥammad b. Marwān on Armenia And in it Muḥammad b. Marwān raided Armenia and killed many of them, and burned their churches and their estates. It was called the Year of the Burning. Al-Ḥajjāj's appointment of Muḥammad b. al-Qāsim al-Thaqafī over Fārs And in it al-Ḥajjāj appointed Muḥammad b. al-Qāsim al-Thaqafī over Fārs and commanded him to kill the Kurds. The appointment of ʿIyāḍ b. Ghanm over Alexandria And in it ʿAbd al-Malik appointed ʿIyāḍ b. Ghanm al-Tujībī over Alexandria, and dismissed from it ʿAbd al-Malik b. Abī al-Kanūd, who had been over it in the previous year. Mūsā b. Nuṣayr's opening of the land of Awraba in the Maghrib And in it Mūsā b. Nuṣayr opened a portion of the lands of the Maghrib, among them the land of Awraba, and killed very many of its people, and captured about fifty thousand. Mention of the conquest of the fortress of Nīzak in Bādhaghīs In this year Yazīd b. al-Muhallab conquered the fortress of Nīzak. Yazīd had placed spies on Nīzak, and when he learned of Nīzak's departure from it, he marched to it and besieged it, and took possession of it and the wealth and treasures within it. It was among the most fortified and impregnable of fortresses, and Nīzak, when he saw it, prostrated to it in veneration of it. Kaʿb b. Maʿdān al-Ashqarī said, mentioning it: And Bādhaghīs, whose summit whoever occupies humbles kings, so if he wills he wrongs or oppresses. An impregnable fortress that no king before him could take except when it faced an army for him and gathered. Its fires are imagined from the distance of their view to be some of the stars when their night grows dark. These are several verses. He also said, mentioning Yazīd and its conquest: He expelled Nīzak from Bādhaghīs, while Nīzak was in a place whose seizure had wearied kings, soaring below the sky as though it were a summer cloud whose clouds had departed from it. The mountain goats do not reach its high peaks, nor the birds, except its vulture and its eagle. The children of its people were not frightened by the wolf, nor did its dogs bark except at the stars. In other verses besides these. When he conquered it, he wrote to al-Ḥajjāj of the conquest, and Yaḥyā b. Yaʿmur al-ʿAdwānī, the confederate of Hudhayl, wrote for him: "We overtook the enemy, and God granted us their shoulders, so we killed a party and captured a party, and a party fled to the mountain peaks, the rugged ravines, the hollows of the valleys, and the bends of the rivers." Al-Ḥajjāj said: "Who writes for Yazīd?" It was said: "Yaḥyā b. Yaʿmur." So he wrote to him to bring him by the post. He came to him as the most eloquent of people. He said: "Where were you born?" He said: "In al-Ahwāz." [He said]: "Then this eloquence, from where?" He said: "I memorized the speech of my father, and he was eloquent." He said: "Tell me, does ʿAnbasah b. Saʿīd make grammatical errors?" He said: "Yes, often." He said: "And so-and-so?" He said: "Yes." He said: "Then tell me, do I make grammatical errors?" He said: "Yes, you make a subtle error: you add a letter and omit a letter, and you put 'an in place of 'in and 'in in place of 'an." He said: "I have granted you three days; if I find you in the land of Iraq, I will kill you." So he returned to Khurasan. In this year Hishām b. Ismāʿīl led the people in the pilgrimage.
