Al-Aʿmash said: Shaqīq said to me: O Sulaymān, if you had seen me when we were fleeing from Khālid b. al-Walīd on the day of Buzākhah, I fell from the camel and my neck almost broke. Had I died that day, the Fire would have been more fitting for me, and I was then eleven years old. It was said to him: Which of you is older, you or al-Rabīʿ b. Khaytham? He said: I am older in years, but he was older in intellect. It was said to him: With what do you testify against al-Ḥajjāj? He said: Do you command me to pass judgment on God? He used to hear the exhortation of Ibrāhīm al-Taymī and tremble like a bird. He would not turn around in prayer. He said: A dirham from trade is dearer to me than ten from my stipend. From Saʿīd b. Ṣāliḥ: Abū Wāʾil used to lead our funeral prayers when he was one hundred and fifty years old. From ʿĀṣim: Abū Wāʾil would sob [secretly], and if the world were given to him on condition that he do that while anyone saw him, he would not do it. From ʿĀṣim: Abū Wāʾil had a booth of reeds, and he and his horse were in it. When he went on campaign he dismantled it, and when he returned he rebuilt it. Muʿādhah bt. ʿAbd Allāh al-ʿAdawiyyah Muʿādhah bt. ʿAbd Allāh al-ʿAdawiyyah, whose kunyah was Umm al-Ṣahbāʾ: She narrated from ʿĀʾishah, and al-Ḥasan and Abū Qilābah narrated from her. She used to keep the night alive [in worship], and she said: I marvel at an eye that sleeps when it knows the length of slumber in the darkness of the graves. When her husband Ṣilah b. Ashyam and her son were killed in one of the campaigns, the women gathered at her place, and she said: Welcome to you if you have come to congratulate me; if you have come for anything else, then go back. She did not use a mattress after that, and she used to say: By God, I do not love remaining alive except to draw near to my Lord, mighty and majestic, through means, that He may gather me with Abū al-Ṣahbāʾ and his son in Paradise. When she was dying she wept then laughed, and she was asked about that. She said: As for weeping, I remembered parting from fasting, prayer, and remembrance. As for laughing, I looked at Abū al-Ṣahbāʾ coming in the courtyard of the house wearing two green garments, and he was among people the like of whom I have not seen in this world, so I laughed at him. I do not think I will reach any obligatory prayer after that. She died before the time of prayer entered.
