Then the Year Eighty-One Began

✧ The cause of the fitnah of Ibn al-Ashʿath The fitnah of Ibn al-Ashʿath Abū Mikhnaf said: Its beginning was in this year. Al-Wāqidī said: In the year eighty-two, and Ibn Jarīr has narrated it in this year, so we have concurred with him in that. The cause of this fitnah was that al-Ḥajjāj hated Ibn al-Ashʿath, and he understood that, and harbored ill will toward him and longed for the removal of the dominion from him. When al-Ḥajjāj appointed him over that aforementioned army, and commanded him to enter the lands of Rutbīl, the king of the Turks, he proceeded and did what we have already mentioned of his seizing some of the lands of the Turks. Then he deemed it advisable for his companions to stay until they gained strength for the coming year. He wrote to al-Ḥajjāj about that, and al-Ḥajjāj wrote back to him, disparaging his opinion in that matter, belittling his intellect, chiding him for cowardice and shrinking from war, and commanding him decisively to enter the lands of Rutbīl. Then he followed that with a second and then a third letter. When al-Ḥajjāj's letters kept arriving urging him to plunge deeper into Rutbīl's lands, he gathered those with him, stood among them, and informed them of the opinion he had held about that and of what al-Ḥajjāj had written commanding a swift attack on Rutbīl. The people rose up at him and said: No, rather we refuse the enemy of God, al-Ḥajjāj; we will not listen to him or obey him. Abū Mikhnaf said: Muṭarrif b. ʿĀmir b. Wāthilah al-Kinānī narrated to me that his father was the first to speak about that, and he was a poet and an orator. Among what he said was: The example of al-Ḥajjāj in this opinion and ours is as the first said to his brother: Put your servant on the horse; if he perishes, he perishes, and if he survives, he is yours. If you are victorious, that will be an increase in his authority, and if you perish, you will be the enemies, the hated ones. Then he said: Cast off the enemy of God, al-Ḥajjāj—and he did not mention deposing ʿAbd al-Malik—and give allegiance to your commander ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. al-Ashʿath, for I call you to witness that I am the first to depose al-Ḥajjāj. The people from every side said: We have deposed the enemy of God. And they leaped to ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. al-Ashʿath and pledged allegiance to him in place of al-Ḥajjāj, without mentioning the deposition of ʿAbd al-Malik b. Marwān. The peace between Ibn al-Ashʿath and Rutbīl Ibn al-Ashʿath sent to Rutbīl and made peace with him on the condition that if he prevailed over al-Ḥajjāj, there would be no tribute upon Rutbīl ever. Then Ibn al-Ashʿath marched with the troops who were with him, coming from Sijistān toward al-Ḥajjāj to fight him and take Iraq from him. Then when they were in the middle of the road, they said: Our deposing al-Ḥajjāj is a deposition of Ibn Marwān. So they deposed them both and renewed the oath of allegiance to Ibn al-Ashʿath, and he accepted their allegiance upon the Book of God and the Sunnah of His Messenger, the deposition of the imams of misguidance, and the jihād against the violators. When they said: Yes, he accepted their allegiance. When news of what they had done in deposing him and deposing Ibn Marwān reached al-Ḥajjāj, he wrote to ʿAbd al-Malik informing him of that and urging him to send troops to him. Al-Ḥajjāj came and encamped at al-Baṣrah. The news of Ibn al-Ashʿath reached al-Muhallab, and he wrote to him calling him to that, but he refused him and sent his letter to al-Ḥajjāj. Al-Muhallab wrote to Ibn al-Ashʿath, saying to him: O Ibn al-Ashʿath, you have placed your foot in a long stirrup. Spare the community of Muḥammad ﷺ. Fear God, fear God. Look after yourself and do not destroy it, and the blood of the Muslims and do not shed it, and the community and do not divide it, and the oath of allegiance and do not break it. If you say: I fear the people for my own sake, then God is more worthy that you should fear Him than the people. So do not expose it to God in the shedding of blood or the declaring lawful of what is forbidden. Peace be upon you. Al-Muhallab's letter to al-Ḥajjāj Al-Muhallab wrote to al-Ḥajjāj: Now then, the people of Iraq have come toward you like a torrent rushing down from on high; nothing can repel it until it reaches its resting place. The people of Iraq have a fierce energy at the start of their campaign and a longing for their sons and wives. Nothing will turn them back until they reach their families and smell their children. Then engage them at that point, for God will grant you victory over them, if God wills. When al-Ḥajjāj read his letter, he said: God do such-and-such to him, and such-and-such. No, by God, it is not for me that he has considered, but for his cousin he has advised. When al-Ḥajjāj's letter reached ʿAbd al-Malik, it alarmed him greatly. He descended from his throne and sent for Khālid b. Yazīd b. Muʿāwiyah and made him read al-Ḥajjāj's letter. Khālid said: O Commander of the Faithful, if this trouble is from Khurāsān, then fear it; but if it is from Sijistān, do not fear it. The equipping of the armies and the defeat of al-Ḥajjāj's vanguard Then ʿAbd al-Malik set about equipping troops from Syria to go to Iraq in support of al-Ḥajjāj, and al-Ḥajjāj prepared to march out against Ibn al-Ashʿath. He rejected the opinion of al-Muhallab in what he had advised, though in it there was sincere counsel and truth. Al-Ḥajjāj's letters to ʿAbd al-Malik did not cease, morning and evening, with news of Ibn al-Ashʿath: where he encamped, from where he departed, and which people were quickest to join him. The people began to rally around Ibn al-Ashʿath from every side, until it was said that thirty-three thousand horsemen and one hundred twenty thousand foot soldiers marched with him. Al-Ḥajjāj marched out with the Syrian troops from al-Baṣrah toward Ibn al-Ashʿath and encamped at Tustar. He sent ahead Muṭahhir b. Ḥayy al-ʿAkkī as commander of the vanguard, and with him ʿAbd Allāh b. Zumayt as another commander. They reached Dujayl, and there was Ibn al-Ashʿath's vanguard of three hundred horsemen under ʿAbd Allāh b. Abān al-Ḥārithī. They met on the Day of Sacrifice at the Dujayl river, and al-Ḥajjāj's vanguard was routed. Ibn al-Ashʿath's men killed a great number of them, about one thousand five hundred, and seized what was in their camp of horses, goods, and money. The news of the defeat of his men came to al-Ḥajjāj, and he was seized by everything that crept and crawled. He had been standing delivering a sermon, and he said: O people, return to al-Baṣrah, for that is easier for the army. So he returned with the people, and Ibn al-Ashʿath's cavalry pursued them. They did not catch any straggler but killed him, nor any lone one but destroyed him. Al-Ḥajjāj fled without turning aside for anything until he reached al-Zāwiyah and encamped there, saying: How excellent is al-Muhallab! What a man of war he is! He advised us with the right opinion, but we did not accept it. Al-Ḥajjāj spent on his army—while in this place—one hundred fifty million dirhams, and he dug a trench around his army. The people of Iraq came and entered al-Baṣrah, reunited with their families, and smelled their children. Ibn al-Ashʿath entered al-Baṣrah and addressed the people there, and they pledged allegiance to him, and he to them, upon the deposition of ʿAbd al-Malik and his deputy al-Ḥajjāj b. Yūsuf. Ibn al-Ashʿath said to them: Al-Ḥajjāj is nothing; rather, take us to ʿAbd al-Malik to fight him. All those in al-Baṣrah of the jurists, the Qurʾān reciters, the elders, and the youths agreed with him in deposing them both. Then Ibn al-Ashʿath ordered a trench around al-Baṣrah, and that was done, and that was in the final days of Dhū al-Ḥijjah of this year.
