عَنْ ✧ Aslam, the freedman of ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb Among the notable figures who died in this year: Aslam, the freedman of ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb: He is Abū Zayd b. Aslam. His origin was from the captives of ʿAyn al-Tamr. ʿUmar bought him in Makkah when he performed the pilgrimage in the year eleven. He died at the age of one hundred and fourteen years. He narrated several ḥadīths from ʿUmar, and he also narrated from others among his companions. He had many merits, may God have mercy on him. Jubayr b. Nufayr b. Mālik al-Ḥaḍramī Jubayr b. Nufayr b. Mālik al-Ḥaḍramī He had companionship and narration. He was one of the scholars of the people of Syria, and he was renowned for worship and knowledge. He died in Syria at the age of one hundred and twenty years; it is said more, and it is said less. ʿAbd Allāh b. Jaʿfar b. Abī Ṭālib ʿAbd Allāh b. Jaʿfar b. Abī Ṭālib: He was born in the land of Abyssinia, and his mother was Asmāʾ bt. ʿUmays. He was the last of the Banū Hāshim to die who had seen the Prophet ﷺ. He resided in Madinah. When his father Jaʿfar was martyred at Muʾtah, the Prophet ﷺ came to their mother and said: "Bring me the sons of my brother." They were brought to him as if they were chicks. He called for a barber and had their heads shaved, then said: "O God, be a successor to Jaʿfar in his family, and bless ʿAbd Allāh in his transaction." Their mother came and mentioned to the Prophet ﷺ that they had nothing, so he said: "I am for them a substitute for their father." ʿAbd Allāh b. Jaʿfar and ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zubayr gave allegiance to the Prophet ﷺ when they were seven years old, and this did not happen for anyone other than the two of them. ʿAbd Allāh b. Jaʿfar was one of the most generous of people. He would give abundant and much, and consider it little. Once he gave as charity two thousand thousand [dirhams], and once he gave a man sixty thousand, and once he gave a man four thousand dinars. It is said that a man once brought sugar to Madinah and it became unsellable, and no one bought it, so Ibn Jaʿfar ordered his steward to buy it and give it as a gift to the people. It is said that when Muʿāwiyah performed the pilgrimage and stopped in Madinah at the house of Marwān, he said one day to his chamberlain: "See if you find at the door al-Ḥasan, or al-Ḥusayn, or Ibn Jaʿfar, or so-and-so"—and he enumerated a group. He went out and saw no one. It was said to him: "They are gathered at ʿAbd Allāh b. Jaʿfar's eating lunch." He came to Muʿāwiyah and informed him, so he said: "I am only like one of them." Then he took a staff and leaned on it, then came to the door of Ibn Jaʿfar and asked permission to enter. He entered, and [Ibn Jaʿfar] seated him at the head of his couch. Muʿāwiyah said to him: "Where is your lunch, O Ibn Jaʿfar?" He said: "Whatever you desire, order it." Muʿāwiyah said: "Feed us marrow." He said: "O boy, bring marrow." He came with a bowl, and Muʿāwiyah ate. Then Ibn Jaʿfar said to his boy: "Bring marrow." He came with another bowl full of marrow, until he did that three times. Muʿāwiyah was astonished and said: "O Ibn Jaʿfar, only abundant giving satisfies you." When Muʿāwiyah left, he ordered fifty thousand dinars for him. Ibn Jaʿfar was a friend of Muʿāwiyah. He would come to him every year, and he would give him one million dirhams and fulfill for him one hundred needs. When Muʿāwiyah was near death, he enjoined his son Yazīd to care for him. When Ibn Jaʿfar came to Yazīd, he said to him: "How much did the Commander of the Faithful give you every year?" He said: "One million." He said to him: "We have doubled it for you." He would give him two million every year. ʿAbd Allāh b. Jaʿfar said to him: "May my father and mother be your ransom, I never said it to anyone before you, nor will I say it to anyone after you." Yazīd said: "Nor did anyone before me give it to you, nor will anyone after me give it to you." It is said that Ibn Jaʿfar had a slave-girl who sang to him named ʿImārah, and he loved her with great love. One day Yazīd b. Muʿāwiyah was present with him, and the slave-girl sang. When Yazīd heard her, he was infatuated with her, but he did not dare ask Ibn Jaʿfar for her, fearing that he would refuse him. The desire for her remained in Yazīd's soul until his father Muʿāwiyah died. Yazīd sent a man from the people of Iraq, gave him trade goods, and ordered him to be gentle in the matter of this slave-girl. The man came to Madinah and stayed as a neighbor of Ibn Jaʿfar. He gave him many gifts and presents and became friendly with him. He kept at it until he obtained the slave-girl and brought her to Yazīd. Al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī used to censure ʿAbd Allāh b. Jaʿfar for listening to singing and amusement and for buying slave-girls born in Islam, and he would say: "Is it not enough for him this ugly matter he is engaged in of these things and others?" Until he married al-Ḥajjāj to the daughter of the Messenger of God ﷺ. Al-Ḥajjāj used to say: "I married her only to humiliate through her the family of Abū Ṭālib." It is said that he did not reach her. ʿAbd al-Malik wrote to him to divorce her, so he divorced her. ʿAbd Allāh b. Jaʿfar transmitted thirteen ḥadīths. Abū Idrīs al-Khawlānī Abū Idrīs al-Khawlānī His name was ʿĀʾidh Allāh b. ʿAbd Allāh. He had spiritual states and merits. He used to say: "A pure heart in filthy clothes is better than a filthy heart in pure clothes." He held the judiciary in Damascus. We have mentioned his biography in our book "al-Takmīl." Maʿbad al-Juhanī al-Qadarī Maʿbad al-Juhanī al-Qadarī It is said that he was Maʿbad b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUkaym, the narrator of the ḥadīth "Do not benefit from the dead animal by its hide or sinew." Other things are said about his lineage. He heard ḥadīth from Ibn ʿAbbās, Ibn ʿUmar, Muʿāwiyah, ʿImrān b. Ḥuṣayn, and others. He witnessed the Day of Arbitration and asked Abū Mūsā about it and gave him counsel. Then he met ʿAmr b. al-ʿĀṣ and gave him counsel about it. ʿAmr said to him: "Enough, O he-goat of Juhaynah. You are not of the people of secret or public matters. Truth will not benefit you, nor will falsehood harm you." This was an insight about him from ʿAmr b. al-ʿĀṣ, and for this reason he was the first to speak about qadar (divine decree). It is said that he took that from a Christian man from the people of Iraq called Saw san. And Ghaylān took the doctrine of qadar from Maʿbad. Maʿbad had worship and asceticism, and Ibn Maʿīn and others deemed him trustworthy in his ḥadīth. Al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī said: "Beware of Maʿbad, for he is astray and leads astray." He was among those who went out with Ibn al-Ashʿath, and al-Ḥajjāj punished him with a great punishment of various tortures, then killed him. Saʿīd b. ʿUfayr said: "Rather, ʿAbd al-Malik b. Marwān crucified him in the year eighty in Damascus, then killed him." Khalīfah b. Khayyāṭ said: "He died before the nineties." And God knows best. And among those who died in this year also: In it died Muḥammad b. ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib, and he is Ibn al-Ḥanafiyyah. In it died Junādah b. Abī Umayyah, and he had companionship, and he was in charge of naval expeditions throughout the days of Muʿāwiyah. In it died al-Sāʾib b. Yazīd b. Ukht al-Namir; it is said in the year eighty-six. He was born during the time of the Prophet ﷺ. In it died Suwayd b. Ghafalah (with fatḥah on the dotted ghayn and the fāʾ). Khaythamah b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Abī Sabrah Khaythamah b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Abī Sabrah, whose name was Yazīd b. Mālik al-Juʿfī: He met ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib, Ibn Masʿūd, ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmar, ʿAdī b. Ḥātim, and al-Nuʿmān b. Bashīr, among others of the Companions. He was a scholar, a worshipper, an ascetic. He inherited two hundred thousand dirhams and spent them on the jurists and Qurʾān reciters. From al-Aʿmash, he said: Sometimes we would enter upon Khaythamah and he would bring out the platter from under the bed with khubayṣah and fālūdhaj on it, and he would say: "I do not crave it. Eat. Indeed I made it only for you." He was wealthy, and he used to tie up dirhams. When he saw a man among his companions with a torn shirt or cloak or in need, he would watch for an opportunity. When the man went out from the door, he would go out from another door until he met him and said: "Buy a shirt, buy a cloak, buy such-and-such a need." And he said: Muḥammad b. Khālid al-Ḍabbī said: We did not know how Khaythamah recited the Qurʾān until he fell ill and became gravely ill. His wife came and sat before him and wept. He said to her: "What makes you weep? Death is inevitable." The woman said to him: "Men after you are forbidden to me." Khaythamah said to her: "I did not mean all this from you. I only feared one man, and he is my brother Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān. He is a dissolute man who drinks wine, and I disliked that wine be drunk in my house after the Qurʾān has been recited in it every three days." From Khaythamah: He bequeathed that he be buried in the cemetery of the poor of his people. ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī al-Hudhayl ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī al-Hudhayl, Abū al-Mughīrah: He heard from ʿAmmār, Khabbāb, ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAmr, Abū Hurayrah, Jarīr, Ibn ʿAbbās, and Ibn Abzā. And he transmitted ḥadīth in mursal form from Abū Bakr, ʿUmar, ʿAlī, and Ibn Masʿūd. He was intensely fearful of God Almighty, as if he were terrified. From ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Hudhayl, he said: The Fire has distracted whoever possesses intellect from mentioning the Garden. ʿUbayd Allāh b. Abī Bakrah ʿUbayd Allāh b. Abī Bakrah: He governed Sijistān during the days of Ziyād b. Abī Sufyān, and he raided Rutbīl during the days of al-Ḥajjāj. He died in this year. He was generous. Ibn Qutaybah mentioned in al-Maʿārif that the first to recite with melodies was ʿUbayd Allāh b. Abī Bakrah. He said: One day ʿUbayd Allāh b. Abī Bakrah was sitting with his companions when a servant boy and a servant girl were brought to him as a gift. He said to one of his sitting companions: "Take them both." Then he thought and said: "Preferring some sitting companions over others is ugly." He said: "O servants, add to each one of our sitting companions a servant boy and a servant girl." He added to them eighty, between servant boys and servant girls. Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-Bāqī al-Bazzāz informed us, saying: Abū al-Qāsim ʿAlī b. al-Muḥsin al-Tanūkhī informed us, on the authority of his father, that a shaykh from the people of Kufa said: I became impoverished until my house fell apart. When the matter became severe for me, the maidservant came and said: "By God, we have no flour and no money to buy it." I said: "Saddle my donkey." She saddled it. I went out fleeing until I reached Basra. When I approached it, behold, I saw a procession coming. I entered among them. The horses turned back wanting Basra. I went with them until I entered it. The owner of the procession reached his house and dismounted, and the procession dismounted, and I dismounted with them. We entered, and behold the vestibule was furnished and people were sitting with the man. He called for lunch, and they brought him the best lunch. I ate lunch with the people. Then he called for ghalīyah perfume and anointed us. Then he said: "O servants, bring a basket." His servants came with a white tied basket. He opened it, and behold in it were tied purses, in each purse a thousand dirhams. He began giving and distributing them among them. Then he came to me and gave me a purse, then he gave again and gave me another, then a third and gave me another. The group took, and one purse remained in the basket. He took it in his hand and said: "Here, O this one whom I do not know." I took four purses and went out. I said to a person: "Who is this?" He said: "ʿUbayd Allāh b. Abī Bakrah." It has reached us that a man attached himself to ʿUbayd Allāh b. Abī Bakrah, and he included him among his retinue and sufficed his expenses. The man became ungrateful for the blessing and slandered him to ʿUbayd Allāh b. Ziyād. That reached Ibn Abī Bakrah, and he bowed his head in thought. It was said to him: "What are you thinking about?" He said: "I fear that I fell short in kindness to him and thus drove him to the evils of his character." Muʿāwiyah b. Qurrah b. Iyās Muʿāwiyah b. Qurrah b. Iyās, whose kunyah was Abū Iyās: He narrated from Anas, Ibn ʿAbbās, and others. From Muʿāwiyah b. Qurrah, he said: I met seventy men from the Companions of the Messenger of God ﷺ. If they were to come among you today, they would not recognize anything of what you are upon except the call to prayer. From ʿUbayd Allāh b. Maymūn, he said: I heard Muʿāwiyah b. Qurrah say: God provides the servant with a month's provision in a single day. If he uses it well, God sets things right through his hands, and he and his family live the rest of their month in good. But if he corrupts it, God Almighty corrupts it for him, and he and his family live the rest of their month in evil. Hammām b. al-Ḥārith al-Nakhaʿī Hammām b. al-Ḥārith al-Nakhaʿī: He narrated from ʿUmar, Ibn Masʿūd, Abū Masʿūd, Ḥudhayfah, Abū al-Dardāʾ, ʿAdī b. Ḥātim, Jarīr, and ʿĀʾishah. The people used to learn from his guidance and his manner. He was one who stayed awake long at night. From Ibrāhīm, from Hammām b. al-Ḥārith: He used to supplicate: "O God, cure me of sleep with wakefulness, and grant me wakefulness in obedience to You." He would not sleep at night except for a short while, and that while sitting.
