Then the Year Seventy-Nine Began

Translation

✧ The Killing of Qaṭarī b. al-Fujāʾah al-Tamīmī In this year Qaṭarī b. al-Fujāʾah al-Tamīmī, Abū Naʿāmah the Khārijite, was killed. He was one of the famous brave men. It is said that he spent twenty years while his companions greeted him with the caliphate. Trials and wars occurred for him with the army of al-Muhallab b. Abī Ṣufrah from the direction of al-Ḥajjāj and others. We have already presented a good portion of them in their places. His emergence was in the time of Muṣʿab b. al-Zubayr, and he overpowered many fortresses, regions, and others. His battles are well known. Al-Ḥajjāj sent many armies against him and he defeated them. It is said that a man from some of the Ḥarūriyyah came out to him, riding an emaciated horse, with an iron club in his hand. When he drew near him, Qaṭarī uncovered his face, and the man turned and fled. Qaṭarī said to him: "Where to? Are you not ashamed to flee when you have not seen a thrust or a blow?" He said: "A person is not ashamed to flee from one like you." Then, at the end of his affair, Sufyān b. al-Abrad al-Kalbī went against him with an army. They fought in Ṭabaristān, and Qaṭarī's horse stumbled, so he fell to the ground. They crowded upon him and killed him, and carried his head to al-Ḥajjāj. It is said that the one who killed him was Sawdah b. al-Ḥurr al-Dārimī. Qaṭarī b. al-Fujāʾah—along with his extreme bravery and boldness—was one of the famous orators of the Arabs, renowned for eloquence, rhetoric, excellence of speech, and good poetry. Among his excellent poetry is his saying, encouraging himself and others, and whoever hears it benefits from it: I say to her, when the heroes had scattered in fragments: Woe to you, you will not be dismayed. For if you asked for the survival of a day Upon the term that is yours, you would not be obeyed. So patience in the field of death, patience! For the attainment of immortality is not within reach. Nor is the garment of life a garment of honor, So the coward's cloak of fear is folded away. The path of death is the goal of every living thing, And its caller to the people of the earth is calling. Whoever is not contented grows weary and ages, And fate delivers him to cessation. There is no good for a person in a life When he is counted among the refuse of goods. The author of the Ḥamāsah mentioned them, and Ibn Khallikān greatly admired them in his history. In this year died Maḥmūd b. al-Rabīʿ, whose kunyah was Abū Ibrāhīm, and he was born in the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. And ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Masʿūd. Qays b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAdas b. Rabīʿah Qays b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAdas b. Rabīʿah, Abū Laylā: He is al-Nābighah, Nābighah of Banū Jaʿdah. It is said his name was ʿAbd Allāh b. Qays, but the first is more correct. He was a pagan and lived into Islam. He came as a delegate to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and recited poetry to him. ʿUmar said to him: Recite to us some of what Allah has pardoned. So he recited a poem to him. He lived long in Islam until he met al-Akhṭal the Christian and competed with him in poetry. Ibn Qutaybah said: Al-Akhṭal defeated him, and he died in Iṣbahān at the age of one hundred and twenty years. Al-Aṣmaʿī said: He lived one hundred and sixty. Al-Nābighah says: I recited to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: We reached the sky with our glory and our fortune, and we hope after that for a place of manifestation. He ﷺ said: "Where is the place of manifestation, O Abū Laylā?" I said: Paradise. He said: "Yes, if Allah wills." Then I said: There is no good in forbearance if it does not have Outbursts that protect its purity from being clouded. There is no good in ignorance if it does not have A forbearing man who, when he brings the matter, sends it back. The Prophet ﷺ said: "You have done well; may Allah not break your teeth." Twice. From Sulaymān b. Muḥammad b. Yaḥyā b. ʿUrwah, from his father, from his paternal uncle ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAmr, who said: The year of famine brought al-Nābighah—Nābighah of Banū Jaʿdah—so he entered upon al-Zubayr in the Sacred Mosque and recited to him: You resembled for us al-Ṣiddīq when you governed us, and ʿUthmān and al-Fārūq, so the destitute rejoiced. You made the people equal in truth, so they became equal, and the pitch-black, dark one returned as morning. Abū Laylā came to you, traversing with it the darkness, the darkness of night, a traverser of the desert, sturdy. So that you might mend a side of him that the vicissitudes of nights and the resolute time had worn away. Ibn al-Zubayr said: Take it easy, Abū Laylā, for poetry is the easiest of your requests with us. As for the purest of our wealth, it belongs to the family of al-Zubayr, and as for the surplus, Banū Asad and Taymāʾ keep us from you. But you have in the wealth of Allah two rights: a right because you saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and a right because you share with the people of Islam in their booty. Then he took him by the hand and entered with him into the house of livestock, and gave him seven young she-camels and a strong male camel, and loaded for him the mounts with wheat, dates, and clothes. Al-Nābighah began to hasten and ate the grain by itself. Ibn al-Zubayr said: Woe to Abū Laylā, exhaustion has overtaken him. Al-Nābighah said: I bear witness that I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: "Quraysh did not govern [and act justly] but they showed mercy, and when mercy was sought from them they showed mercy; and when they spoke they told the truth, and when they promised good they fulfilled it. So I and the prophets are the forerunners of those who hasten." Al-Zubayrī said: The forerunner is the one who goes ahead and gives water to the camels of the people. And al-Quṭāmī recited: They urged us on, and they were of our companions, as forerunners hasten to those coming to water. And "those who hasten" are those who speed one after another. From this is the crashing thunder: the wind that follows one after another. And "rajīl" means strong and sturdy. Al-Naḍr b. Shumayl said, and he was asked: Who is the oldest person you have met? He said: Al-Muntajiʿ the Bedouin. He said: I said to al-Muntajiʿ: Who is the oldest person you have met? He said: Al-Nābighah al-Jaʿdī. I said to al-Nābighah: How long did you live in the pre-Islamic era? He said: I lived two dārs, then I met Muḥammad ﷺ and became a Muslim. Al-Naḍr said: Two dārs are two hundred years. Al-Nābighah said: I used to answer on behalf of the Prophet ﷺ until Allah, Mighty and Majestic, took him.
