Translation
✧ Rāfiʿ b. Khadīj b. Rāfiʿ al-Anṣārī Mention of the notables who died in this year: Saʿd b. Mālik b. Sinān, al-Anṣārī al-Khazrajī A noble Companion, among the jurists of the Companions. He was deemed too young on the day of Uḥud, then his first battle was the Trench, and he witnessed with the Messenger of God ﷺ twelve expeditions. He narrated many hadiths from him, and from a group of the Companions, and a number of the Followers and a group of the Companions narrated from him. He was among the excellent, virtuous, and learned of the Companions, ؓ. Al-Wāqidī and others said: He died in the year seventy-four. It was also said: ten years before that. God knows best. From Abī Saʿīd al-Khudrī, he said: I said: O Messenger of God, which people are most severely tried? He said: The prophets. I said: Then who? He said: Then the righteous. One of them would be tried with poverty until he found nothing but a cover — in one narration: nothing but a cloak — or something like it, and one of them would be tried and become infested with lice until he cast off the lice, and one of them was more joyful at affliction than at ease. From Saʿīd al-Maqburī, from Abī Saʿīd al-Khudrī, that his family complained to him of need, so he went out to the Messenger of God ﷺ to ask him for something. He met him on the pulpit while he was saying: O people, it is time for you to dispense with asking; for whoever seeks chastity, God grants him chastity, and whoever seeks self-sufficiency, God enriches him. By Him in whose hand is the soul of Muḥammad, God has not provided a servant any provision more ample for him than patience. If you insist on asking me, I will give you what I find. Abū Juḥayfa Wahb b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Suwāʾī Abū Juḥayfa Wahb b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Suwāʾī A Companion who saw the Prophet ﷺ, and was below puberty at the death of the Prophet ﷺ, but he narrated several hadiths from him, and from ʿAlī and al-Barāʾ b. ʿĀzib, and a group of the Followers narrated from him; among them Ismāʿīl b. Abī Khālid, al-Ḥakam, Salama b. Kuhayl, al-Shaʿbī, and Abū Isḥāq al-Sabīʿī. He settled in Kūfa and built a house there. He died in this year, and it was also said: in the year ninety-four. God knows best. He was the chief of ʿAlī's guard, and when ʿAlī gave a sermon, Abū Juḥayfa would stand beneath his pulpit. Salama b. al-Akwaʿ Salama b. al-Akwaʿ b. ʿAmr b. Sinān al-Anṣārī He was one of those who pledged allegiance under the tree, and was among the horsemen of the Companions and their scholars. He used to give legal opinions in Madinah, and he had well-known battles during the life of the Prophet ﷺ and after him. He died in Madinah, having passed seventy years. Mālik b. Abī ʿĀmir, al-Aṣbaḥī al-Madanī He was the grandfather of Imām Mālik b. Anas. He narrated from a group of the Companions and others, and was virtuous and learned. He died in Madinah. Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Sulamī Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Sulamī Uncontested reciter of the people of Kūfa. His name is ʿAbd Allāh b. Ḥabīb. He recited the Qurʾān to ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān and Ibn Masʿūd, and heard from a group of the Companions and others. He taught the Qurʾān to the people in Kūfa from the caliphate of ʿUthmān until the governorship of al-Ḥajjāj. ʿĀṣim b. Abī al-Najūd and many others recited to him. He died in Kūfa. Abū Muʿriḍ al-Asadī Abū Muʿriḍ al-Asadī His name is Mughīra b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Kūfī. He was born during the life of the Prophet ﷺ, and came as a delegate to ʿAbd al-Malik b. Marwān and praised him. He had good poetry and was known as al-Uqayshir. He had a ruddy face and abundant hair. He died in Kūfa in this year, having approached eighty years. Bishr b. Marwān al-Umawī Bishr b. Marwān al-Umawī Brother of ʿAbd al-Malik b. Marwān. He governed the two Iraqs for his brother ʿAbd al-Malik. He had a house in Damascus at the ʿAqabat al-Kattān. He was liberal and generous, and to him is attributed Dayr Marwān near Ḥajīrā. He was the one who killed Khālid b. Ḥuṣayn al-Kilābī on the day of Marj Rāhiṭ. Doors were never closed before him, and he would say: Only women veil themselves. He was cheerful of face, and he would reward poetry with thousands. Al-Farazdaq and al-Akhṭal praised him. The Jahmiyya use as evidence for the istiwāʾ on the Throne being istīlāʾ (conquest) the verse of al-Akhṭal in which he praised Bishr b. Marwān, namely his saying: Bishr has taken possession (istawā) of Iraq without sword or shed blood. There is no proof in it; for this reasoning is invalid from many aspects, and al-Akhṭal was a Christian. The cause of Bishr's death was that an abscess appeared in his right hand. It was said to him: We will cut it off from the joint. He became alarmed, and before evening it had spread to the shoulder, then by morning it had spread to the chest, then he died. When he was dying, he began to weep and say: By God, I wish I were a slave herding sheep in the desert for some Bedouin and had never held the office I held. His words were mentioned to Abī Ḥāzim — or to Saʿīd b. al-Musayyab — and he said: Praise be to God who made them at death flee to us, and did not make us flee to them; we see in them lessons. Al-Ḥasan said: I entered upon him, and he was tossing on his bed, then he descended from it to the courtyard of the house, with physicians around him. He died in Baṣra in this year, and he was the first governor to die there. When ʿAbd al-Malik learned of his death, he grieved for him and ordered the poets to elegize him. God, glorified and exalted, knows best. Among those who also died in it: In it died Jābir b. Samura al-Suwāʾī during the governorship of Bishr b. Marwān in Kūfa, and during his governorship also Abū Juḥayfa died in Kūfa. In it died ʿAmr b. Maymūn al-Awdī, and it was said: in the year seventy-five. He had lived in the Jāhiliyya and was among the long-lived. In it died ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUtba b. Masʿūd, and he was one of ʿUmar's governors, and it was said: he died in the year seventy-three. In it died ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿUthmān al-Taymī, and he was a Companion. In it died Muḥammad b. Ḥāṭib b. al-Ḥārith al-Jumaḥī, and his birthplace was in the land of Abyssinia, and he was brought to the Prophet ﷺ. In it died Abū Saʿīd b. Muʿallā al-Anṣārī. In it died Aws b. Ḍamʿaj al-Kūfī. Ḍamʿaj with ḍād and jīm. ʿAmr b. Maymūn al-Awdī ʿAmr b. Maymūn al-Awdī: He narrated from ʿUmar, ʿAlī, Ibn Masʿūd, Muʿādh, Abī Ayyūb, Abī Masʿūd, ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmar, Abī Hurayra, and Ibn ʿAbbās. He was among the righteous; when he was seen, God, mighty and majestic, was remembered. He performed sixty pilgrimages. Abū al-Qāsim al-Jumaḥī Muḥammad b. Ḥāṭib b. al-Ḥārith, Abū al-Qāsim al-Jumaḥī: He was the first to be named Muḥammad in Islam after the Messenger of God ﷺ. He was born on the ship when they went to the Negus, and the Messenger of God ﷺ wiped his head, spat lightly into his mouth, and prayed for blessing for him. He narrated from the Messenger of God ﷺ, and died in Makkah in this year.
