✧ Appointment of Bishr b. Marwān as Governor of al-Baṣrah Ibn Jarīr said: In this year—meaning the year seventy-three—ʿAbd al-Malik dismissed Khālid b. ʿAbd Allāh from al-Baṣrah and added it to his brother Bishr b. Marwān along with al-Kūfah. Bishr set out to it and appointed ʿAmr b. Ḥurayth as his deputy over al-Kūfah. The Expedition Against the Byzantines In it, Muḥammad b. Marwān raided the summer expedition and defeated the Byzantines. It was said: In this year occurred the battle of ʿUthmān b. al-Walīd with the Byzantines, from the direction of Armenia, while he was in four thousand and the Byzantines were in sixty thousand; he defeated them and killed a great number among them. Who Led the Pilgrimage This Year and the Deputies of the Governors The Ḥajj for the people in this year was conducted by al-Ḥajjāj b. Yūsuf al-Thaqafī as well, while he was over Makkah, al-Yaman, and al-Yamāmah, and over al-Kūfah and al-Baṣrah was Bishr b. Marwān, according to the account of al-Wāqidī. According to the account of others: over al-Kūfah was Bishr b. Marwān, over al-Baṣrah was Khālid b. ʿAbd Allāh, and over the judiciary of al-Kūfah was Shurayḥ b. al-Ḥārith. Over the judiciary of al-Baṣrah was Hishām b. Hubayrah. Over the governorship of Khurāsān was Bukayr b. Wishāḥ, that is, the one who had been the deputy of ʿAbd Allāh b. Khāzim. And Allah knows best. The People's Pledge of Allegiance to ʿAbd al-Malik b. Marwān In this year the people gathered in allegiance to ʿAbd al-Malik. So Ibn ʿUmar, Abū Saʿīd, and Salamah b. al-Akwaʿ wrote to him pledging allegiance. ʿAbd al-Malik used to sit for the people two days every week. The Story of a Complaint Whose Author Did Not Write His Name From Abū Rayḥānah, one of the chamberlains of ʿAbd al-Malik b. Marwān, who said: ʿAbd al-Malik used to sit two days every week in a general audience. While he was sitting in an elevated chamber of his, and the petitions had been brought in to him, a petition fell into his hand that was not marked with a name, in which was written: "If the Commander of the Faithful sees fit to command his slave girl to sing to me three songs, then he may carry out against me whatever he wishes of his judgment." He became inflamed with anger at that and said: "O Rabāḥ, bring me the author of this petition." The people all went out, and a boy was brought in to him, just past the age of puberty, as if he were the most handsome and fairest of youths. ʿAbd al-Malik said to him: "O boy, is this your petition?" He said: "Yes, O Commander of the Faithful." He said: "What has deceived you about me? By Allah, I will make an example of you, and I will deter by you your peers among the bold. Bring me the slave girl." A slave girl was brought as if she were a piece of the moon, with a lute in her hand. A chair was placed for her, and she sat. ʿAbd al-Malik said: "Command her, O boy." So he said: "Sing to me, O slave girl, the poetry of Qays b. Dhurayḥ: You were sufficient for the soul, had it lasted or drawn near, But the world is but the goods of delusion. And we were together, before passion appeared, In the most blissful state of happiness and joy. The slanderers did not cease until there appeared to us The bellies of passion turned inside out with their backs." So she sang it and excelled. The boy went out of all the clothes that were on him, tearing them. Then ʿAbd al-Malik said to him: "Command her to sing you the second song." He said: "Sing the poetry of Jamīl: O would that I knew whether I shall spend a night In Wādī al-Qurā; then, indeed, I would be happy. When I say what is in me, O Buthaynah, my killer From love, she says: Thābit and Yazīd. And if I say: Return some of my reason so that I may live with it Among the people, she says: That is far from you. I am not returned with what I came seeking, Nor does her love, in what perishes, perish. Love dies from me when I meet her, And it revives when I part from her, so it returns." So the slave girl sang to him, and he fell unconscious for a while, then he recovered. ʿAbd al-Malik said to him: "Command her to sing you the third song." He said: "O slave girl, sing the poetry of Qays b. al-Mulawwaḥ: Among the neighbors departing from the hollow of Wajrah Is a gazelle with languid eyes, brought up in comfort. So do not think that the stranger who went away is the stranger, But rather the one from whom you go away is the stranger." So the slave girl sang to him, and the boy threw himself from the elevated chamber and did not reach the ground until he was torn apart. ʿAbd al-Malik said: "Woe to him! He hastened his own death, and my plan for him was other than what he did." He gave orders and the slave girl was sent out of his palace. Then he asked about the boy, and they said: "A stranger, not known, except that for three days he has been calling out in the market with his hand on his head: Tomorrow the weepers among us and among you will be many, And my abode will increase in distance from your abodes." The Killing of Abū Fudayk In this year ʿAbd al-Malik dispatched ʿUmar b. ʿUbayd Allāh to fight Abū Fudayk, and commanded him to enlist with him whomever he wished. He came to al-Kūfah and called upon its people, and ten thousand enlisted with him. He distributed their stipends to them, then marched with them. He placed the people of al-Kūfah on the right wing, over them Muḥammad b. Mūsā b. Ṭalḥah, and he placed the people of al-Baṣrah on the left wing, over them his nephew ʿUmar b. Mūsā b. ʿUbayd Allāh, while he was in the center, until they reached al-Baḥrayn. ʿUmar arrayed his companions, and placed the infantry in front with spears in their hands. Abū Fudayk and his companions charged with a single charge and routed ʿUmar's left wing, so ʿUmar was wounded. The people of al-Kūfah and the people of al-Baṣrah charged, and they plundered the enemy's camp, and they killed Abū Fudayk, and they besieged them, so they surrendered on the condition of judgment. They killed about six thousand of them and captured eight hundred, and they returned to al-Baṣrah.
