✧ ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṣafwān b. Umayyah b. Khalaf al-Jumaḥī Among the notables who were killed with Ibn al-Zubayr in the year seventy-three in Makkah: ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṣafwān b. Umayyah b. Khalaf al-Jumaḥī, Abū Ṣafwān al-Makkī. He was the eldest of his father’s children, and he lived during the lifetime of the Prophet ﷺ. He related from ʿUmar and a group of the Companions, and a multitude of the Successors related from him. He was a noble, honorable, obeyed, and forbearing leader who endured harm; if a black slave reviled him, he would not disdain it, and no one sought him for anything but he would send him back disappointed. He never heard of a desert expanse except that he dug a well or made a watering trough in it, and never a mountain pass except that he made it easy. It was said that al-Muhallab b. Abī Ṣufrah came to Ibn al-Zubayr from Iraq and prolonged his private meeting with him. Ibn Ṣafwān came and said: “Who is this who has kept you busy since today?” He said: “This is the chief of the Arabs from the people of Iraq.” He said: “He must be al-Muhallab.” Al-Muhallab said to Ibn al-Zubayr: “And who is this who asks about me, O Commander of the Faithful?” He said: “This is the chief of Quraysh in Makkah.” He said: “He must be ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṣafwān.” Ibn Ṣafwān was extremely generous. Al-Zubayr b. Bakkār said with his chain: Muʿāwiyah came as a pilgrim, and the people met him. ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṣafwān was among those who met him, and he began riding alongside Muʿāwiyah. The people of Syria began saying: “Who is this who rides alongside the Commander of the Faithful?” When he reached Makkah, the mountain was white with sheep. He said: “O Commander of the Faithful, these are sheep which I have made a slaughter-gift for you; distribute them among the troops.” They were two thousand sheep. They said: “We have never seen anyone more generous than the cousin of the Commander of the Faithful.” Then Ibn Ṣafwān was among those who remained steadfast with Ibn al-Zubayr when al-Ḥajjāj besieged him. Ibn al-Zubayr said to him: “I release you from your pledge of allegiance, so go wherever you wish.” He said: “I fight only for my religion.” Then he remained steadfast until he was killed while clinging to the curtains of the Kaʿbah in this year, may God have mercy on him and honor his resting place. ʿAbd Allāh b. Muṭīʿ b. al-Aswad b. Ḥārithah ʿAbd Allāh b. Muṭīʿ b. al-Aswad b. Ḥārithah al-Qurashī al-ʿAdawī al-Madanī. He was born during the lifetime of the Messenger of God ﷺ, and he chewed a date for him and prayed for blessing for him. He related from his father, from the Messenger of God ﷺ, that he said: “No Qurashī will be killed patiently after today until the Day of Resurrection.” From him related his two sons Ibrāhīm and Muḥammad, al-Shaʿbī, ʿĪsā b. Ṭalḥah b. ʿUbayd Allāh, and Muḥammad b. Abī Mūsā. Al-Zubayr b. Bakkār said: Ibn Muṭīʿ was one of the great men of Quraysh in toughness and courage. My uncle Muṣʿab informed me that he was in command of Quraysh on the day of al-Ḥarrah, and he was killed with Ibn al-Zubayr in Makkah. He is the one who said: I am the one who fled on the day of al-Ḥarrah, and an old man flees only once; I will compensate a return with a flight. May God have mercy on him. ʿAwf b. Mālik b. Abī ʿAwf al-Ashjaʿī al-Ghaṭafānī ʿAwf b. Mālik b. Abī ʿAwf al-Ashjaʿī al-Ghaṭafānī. A noble Companion. He witnessed Muʾtah with Khālid b. al-Walīd and the commanders before him, and he witnessed the conquest, and he carried the banner of his people that day. He witnessed the conquest of Syria, and he related hadiths from the Messenger of God ﷺ. A group of the Successors related from him, as did Abū Hurayrah, who died before him. Al-Wāqidī, Khalīfah b. Khayyāṭ, Abū ʿUbayd, and more than one said: He died in the year seventy-three in Syria. Asmāʾ bt. Abī Bakr al-Ṣiddīq Asmāʾ bt. Abī Bakr al-Ṣiddīq. The mother of ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zubayr. She was called Dhāt al-Niṭāqayn (She of the Two Girdles). She was so named in the year of the Hijrah when she tore her girdle and tied with it the provision bag of the Prophet ﷺ and Abū Bakr when they set out to the cave of Thawr for the emigration. Her mother was Qaylah, or it is said Qutaylah bt. ʿAbd al-ʿUzzā of the Banū ʿĀmir b. Luʾayy. Asmāʾ embraced Islam early, while they were in Makkah at the beginning of Islam. She emigrated with her husband al-Zubayr while she was pregnant, full term with her son ʿAbd Allāh. She gave birth to him at Qubāʾ, upon their first arrival in al-Madīnah. Then she bore al-Zubayr after that ʿUrwah and al-Mundhir. Then when she grew old, al-Zubayr divorced her. It is said: Rather his son ʿAbd Allāh said to him: “One like me—his mother should not be lain with.” So al-Zubayr divorced her. It is also said: She and al-Zubayr had a dispute, and ʿAbd Allāh came to reconcile between them. Al-Zubayr said: “If you enter, she is divorced.” So he entered, and she became separated. God knows best. Asmāʾ lived a long life and lost her sight at the end of her life. It is said: Rather her sight was sound, and no tooth fell out. She lived to see the killing of her son in this year, as we mentioned, then she died five days after him. It is said: ten, or twenty, or twenty-some days, or it is said she lived a hundred days after him, which is the most widely known. She reached the age of one hundred years, and no tooth fell out, and her intellect was not impaired. May God have mercy on her and be pleased with her. She related from the Prophet ﷺ several good and blessed hadiths, ؓ and may God have mercy on her. Among those who died in this year other than those mentioned above with Ibn al-Zubayr: ʿAbd Allāh b. Saʿd b. Khaythamah al-Anṣārī. He was a Companion, and he witnessed al-Yarmūk. He was devoted to worship and military expeditions. ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Ḥadrad al-Aslamī, Abū Muḥammad. He was a Companion with hadiths, and he died in al-Madīnah. Mālik b. Mismaʿ b. Ghassān al-Baṣrī Mālik b. Mismaʿ b. Ghassān al-Baṣrī. He was extremely diligent in worship and asceticism. Thābit b. al-Ḍaḥḥāk al-Anṣārī Thābit b. al-Ḍaḥḥāk al-Anṣārī. He was a Companion with hadiths, and he died in al-Madīnah. He was called Abū Zayd al-Ashalī, and he was one of those who pledged allegiance under the tree. Yaḥyā b. Abī Kathīr said: Abū Qilābah informed me that Thābit b. al-Ḍaḥḥāk informed him that he pledged allegiance to the Messenger of God ﷺ under the tree, and that the Messenger of God ﷺ said: “Whoever accuses a believer of disbelief, it is like killing him.” Zaynab bt. Abī Salamah al-Makhzūmiyyah Zaynab bt. Abī Salamah al-Makhzūmiyyah. The stepdaughter of the Prophet ﷺ. Her mother gave birth to her in Abyssinia, and she had hadiths and companionship. Tawbah b. al-Ḥumayyir Tawbah b. al-Ḥumayyir. He is the one who is called Majnūn Laylā (the mad lover of Laylā). Tawbah used to launch raids against the Banū al-Ḥārith b. Kaʿb. He saw Laylā and fell in love with her, became infatuated with her, and wandered distraught in love and passion for her. He composed many strong and brilliant poems about her, which were unsurpassed and unmatched because of their abundance of meanings and wise sayings. It was said to him once: “Was there ever any improper act between you and Laylā?” He said: “I renounce the intercession of Muḥammad ﷺ if I ever loosened my trousers over anything forbidden.” Laylā entered upon ʿAbd al-Malik b. Marwān to complain of an injustice. He said to her: “What did Tawbah see in you that he loved you with all this passion?” She said: “By God, O Commander of the Faithful, there was never any impropriety or indecency between me and him. The Arabs love and remain chaste, and they compose poems about those they desire and love, while remaining chaste and guarding themselves from base acts.” So he removed her injustice and gave her a reward. Tawbah died in this year. It is said that Laylā came to his grave and wept over him until she died, and God knows best. Mālik b. Mismaʿ And Mālik b. Mismaʿ, Abū Ghassān al-Bakrī. It is said he died in the year sixty-four, and he was born during the lifetime of the Messenger of God ﷺ. Salm b. Ziyād b. Abīhi Salm b. Ziyād b. Abīhi died before Bishr b. Marwān. Maʿbad b. Khālid al-Juhanī In this year Maʿbad b. Khālid al-Juhanī died at the age of eighty, and he was a Companion. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿUthmān b. ʿUbayd Allāh In this year ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿUthmān b. ʿUbayd Allāh was killed with Ibn al-Zubayr. He was the nephew of Ṭalḥah b. ʿUbayd Allāh, and he was a Companion. Ṣafwān b. Muḥriz al-Māzinī Ṣafwān b. Muḥriz al-Māzinī: He was one of the great pious worshippers. He related from Ibn ʿUmar, Abū Mūsā, and ʿImrān b. Ḥuṣayn among others. Al-Muʿallā b. Ziyād al-Firdawsī informed us, saying: Ṣafwān had an underground chamber in which he would weep. From Hishām b. Ḥassān, from al-Ḥasan, who said: I met people who were more abstinent regarding what God had made lawful for them than you are regarding what God has forbidden you. I met people who were more fearful that their good deeds would not be accepted than you are of your evil deeds. I accompanied people, one of whom would eat on the ground and sleep on the ground. Among them was Ṣafwān b. Muḥriz al-Māzinī. He used to say: “When I return to my family and get a loaf of bread, I eat it, and may God reward the world on behalf of its people with good. By God, he did not exceed a loaf until he departed the world.” He would remain fasting and break his fast on a loaf and drink water with it until he quenched his thirst. Then he would stand and pray until morning. When he prayed the dawn prayer, he would take the muṣḥaf and place it in his lap, reciting until the day advanced. Then he would stand and pray until midday. When midday came, he would throw himself on the ground and sleep until the noon prayer, and that was his sleep until he departed the world. When he prayed the noon prayer, he would stand and pray until the afternoon prayer. When he prayed the afternoon prayer, he would place the muṣḥaf in his lap and continue reciting until the sun turned yellow. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb, Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān: He embraced Islam in Makkah with his father while he was young, before reaching puberty. He emigrated with his father, and he witnessed the Battle of the Trench and what came after it. He was present on the day of al-Qādisiyyah and the day of Jalūlāʾ and the battles against the Persians between them. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: “ʿAbd Allāh is a righteous man.” Jābir b. ʿAbd Allāh said: “We did not find anyone except that the world had swayed him, except Ibn ʿUmar.” ʿĀʾishah said: “I have never seen anyone more adherent to the first command than Ibn ʿUmar.” Saʿīd b. al-Musayyib said: “If I were to testify for anyone that he was among the people of Paradise, I would testify for ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmar.” Ṭāwūs said: “I have never seen a man more scrupulous than Ibn ʿUmar.” In his prostration he would say: “You know that nothing prevents me from vying with Quraysh over this world except fear of You.” From ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Abī al-Zinād, from his father, who said: Four gathered in the Ḥijr: Muṣʿab, ʿUrwah, and ʿAbd Allāh the sons of al-Zubayr, and ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmar. They said: “Make wishes.” ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zubayr said: “As for me, I wish for the caliphate.” ʿUrwah said: “As for me, I wish that knowledge be taken from me.” Muṣʿab said: “As for me, I wish for the governorship of Iraq and to combine ʿĀʾishah bt. Ṭalḥah and Sukaynah bt. al-Ḥusayn.” ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmar said: “As for me, I wish for forgiveness.” He said: They attained what they wished, and perhaps Ibn ʿUmar was forgiven. From al-Shaʿbī, who said: I saw a wonder. We were in the courtyard of the Kaʿbah—I, ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmar, ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zubayr, Muṣʿab b. al-Zubayr, and ʿAbd al-Malik b. Marwān. After they finished their conversation, the people said: “Let a man among you stand and take hold of the Yamānī corner and ask God for his need, for he will be given what he asks. Stand, O ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zubayr, for you are the first child born in the Hijrah.” So he stood and took hold of the Yamānī corner, then said: “O God, You are great, hoped for every great thing. I ask You by the sanctity of Your face, the sanctity of Your Throne, the sanctity of Your House, and the sanctity of Your Prophet, ﷺ, that You do not cause me to die from this world until You appoint me over the Hijaz and I am greeted with the caliphate.” Then he came and sat down. They said: “Stand, O Muṣʿab.” So he stood and took hold of the Yamānī corner, and said: “O God, You are Lord of everything, and to You everything returns. I ask You by Your power over everything that You do not cause me to die from this world until You appoint me over Iraq and marry me to Sukaynah bt. al-Ḥusayn.” Then he came and sat down. They said: “Stand, O ʿAbd al-Malik.” So he stood and took hold of the Yamānī corner, and said: “O God, Lord of the seven heavens and Lord of the earth with vegetation after barrenness, I ask You what Your obedient servants ask You, and I ask You by the sanctity of Your face, and I ask You by Your right over all Your creation, and by the right of those who circumambulate Your House, that You do not cause me to die from this world until You appoint me over the east of the earth and its west, and no one disputes with me except that I am brought his head.” Then he came and sat down. Then they said: “Stand, O ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmar.” So he stood until he took hold of the Yamānī corner, then said: “O God, You are Compassionate, Merciful. I ask You by Your mercy which preceded Your wrath, and I ask You by Your power over all Your creation, that You do not cause me to die from this world until You make Paradise obligatory for me.” Al-Shaʿbī said: My eyes did not leave this world until I saw every man among them given what he asked, and ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmar was given glad tidings of Paradise, and it was seen for him. From Ḥamzah b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmar, from ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmar, who said: This verse occurred to me: “You will not attain righteousness until you spend of what you love” [3:92]. I recalled what God had given me, and I found nothing dearer to me than my slave girl Rumaythah. I said: “She is free for the sake of God.” Were it not that I do not take back anything I have given to God, I would have married her. So Nāfiʿ married her, and she became the mother of his child. From Nāfiʿ, who said: When Ibn ʿUmar’s admiration for any of his wealth became intense, he would offer it to God, Mighty and Majestic. Nāfiʿ said: His slaves knew that from him, so perhaps one of them would roll up his sleeves and stay in the mosque, and when he saw him in that good state, he would free him. His companions would say to him: “O Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, by God, they only intend to deceive you.” Ibn ʿUmar would say: “Whoever deceives us for the sake of God, we let ourselves be deceived for him.” Nāfiʿ said: I saw us one evening when Ibn ʿUmar rode off on a noble camel of his that he had acquired with wealth. When its gait pleased him, he made it kneel in its place, then dismounted and said: “O Nāfiʿ, remove its halter and saddle, set it free, mark it, and include it among the sacrificial camels.” Nāfiʿ said: Ibn ʿUmar did not die until he had freed a thousand persons, not more. He would spend the night in prayer, and when the pre-dawn came, he would seek forgiveness until morning. He would spend the time between the noon prayer and the afternoon prayer in worship. Righteousness was not known in ʿUmar or Ibn ʿUmar until they spoke or acted. And he said: ʿAbd Allāh b. Nāfiʿ, on the authority of his father, who said: The butt of a spear of a man from the companions of al-Ḥajjāj had struck the leg of Ibn ʿUmar, and the wound had healed over. Then when the people set out on their return, it broke open again on Ibn ʿUmar. Al-Ḥajjāj entered to visit him and said, "Who struck you?" He said, "You have killed me." He said, "How so?" He said, "You carried weapons into the sanctuary of Allah, and one of your companions struck me." When death came to him, he enjoined that he not be buried in the sanctuary. But he was prevailed upon, and he was buried in the sanctuary, and al-Ḥajjāj prayed over him. And from Ḥanbal b. Isḥāq, who said: Abū ʿAbd Allāh related to me, saying: ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmar died in the year seventy-three. Likewise said Abū Nuʿaym al-Faḍl b. Dukayn and Ibn Bukayr. And it was said: He died in the year seventy-four. And from Saʿīd b. ʿUfayr, who said: In the year seventy-four, ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmar died in Makkah and was buried at Dhū Ṭuwā in the cemetery of the Emigrants. And it was said: He was buried at Fajj, and he was eighty-four years old.
