Then the Year Seventy-Three Began
Translation
✧ This is the biography of the Commander of the Faithful ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zubayr ؓ His Name, Lineage, and Kunya He is ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zubayr b. al-ʿAwwām b. Khuwaylid b. Asad b. ʿAbd al-ʿUzzā b. Quṣayy b. Kilāb, Abū Bakr, and he is also called Abū Khubayb, al-Qurashī al-Asadī. He was the first child born to the Muhājirūn in Madinah after the Hijrah. His mother was Asmāʾ bt. Abī Bakr al-Ṣiddīq, the one of the two girdles. She emigrated with him—while she was pregnant with him at full term—and gave birth to him at Qubāʾ when they first arrived in Madinah. It was said that she gave birth to him in Shawwāl of the year two of the Hijrah. This was said by al-Wāqidī, Muṣʿab b. al-Zubayr, and others. The first opinion is more correct, due to what Aḥmad narrated from Usāmah, from Hishām, from his father, from Asmāʾ, that she became pregnant with ʿAbd Allāh in Makkah. She said: "I left with him while I was at full term, and came to Madinah, where I stopped and gave birth to him. Then I brought him to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and placed him in his lap. He then called for a date, chewed it, and then spat into his mouth. The first thing to enter his belly was the saliva of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." She said: "Then he performed taḥnīk on him, supplicated for him, and blessed him. He was the first child born in Islam." He was a noble companion. He narrated hadiths from the Prophet ﷺ, and narrated from his father, ʿUmar, ʿUthmān, and others. From him, a group of the tābiʿūn narrated. He witnessed the Battle of the Camel with his father when he was young. He attended the sermon of ʿUmar at al-Jābiyah and narrated it from him in full. This is established from more than one source. He came to Damascus for the expedition against Constantinople, then came to it another time. He received the pledge of allegiance for the caliphate during the days of Yazīd b. Muʿāwiyah. When Yazīd died, he gained control over the Hijaz, Yemen, the two Iraqs, Egypt, Khurasan, and the rest of the lands of Syria except Damascus. The pledge of allegiance to him was completed in the year sixty-four, and the people were in a good state during his time. His Birth and His Pledge of Allegiance to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ It is established from more than one source, from Hishām, from his father, from Asmāʾ, that she left Makkah with ʿAbd Allāh as an emigrant while she was pregnant with him, and gave birth to him at Qubāʾ when they first arrived in Madinah. She brought him to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he performed taḥnīk on him, named him ʿAbd Allāh, supplicated for him, and the Muslims rejoiced over him, because the Jews had claimed that they had bewitched the Muhājirūn so that no child would be born to them in Madinah. When Ibn al-Zubayr was born, the Muslims proclaimed takbīr. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmar heard the army of Syria when they proclaimed takbīr at his killing, and said: "By Allah, those who proclaimed takbīr at his birth are better than these who proclaimed takbīr at his killing." Al-Ṣiddīq called the adhān in his ears when he was born ؓ. Whoever said that al-Ṣiddīq circumambulated the Kaʿbah with him while he was in a rag is mistaken—and Allah knows best. Al-Ṣiddīq only circumambulated with him in Madinah so that the matter of his birth would become well known, contrary to what the Jews had claimed. Muṣʿab al-Zubayrī said: "ʿAbd Allāh had sparse cheeks, and his beard did not become full until he reached sixty years." From Sālim b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUrwah, from his father, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was approached about a group of boys who had grown up—among them ʿAbd Allāh b. Jaʿfar, ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zubayr, and ʿUmar b. Abī Salamah—and it was said: "O Messenger of Allah, if only you would accept their pledge of allegiance so that your blessing would be upon them and they would have a mention." So they were brought to him, but they seemed to hold back, and ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zubayr rushed forward. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ smiled and said: "He is the son of his father," and accepted his pledge of allegiance. His Drinking of the Blood of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ It has been narrated from more than one source that ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zubayr drank the blood of the Prophet ﷺ. The Prophet ﷺ had been cupped into a basin, and he gave it to ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zubayr to pour it out, but he drank it. He said to him: "The Fire will not touch you except to the extent of the oath, and woe to you from the people, and woe to the people from you." In another narration, he said to him: "O ʿAbd Allāh, take this blood and pour it out where no one sees you." When he went far, he turned to that blood and drank it. When he returned, he said: "What did you do with the blood?" He said: "I went to the most hidden place I knew and put it there." He said: "Perhaps you drank it?" He said: "Yes." He said: "The Fire will not touch you except to the extent of the oath; woe to the people from you, and woe to you from the people." That strength which was in him came from that blood. Muḥammad b. Saʿd said that Nawf al-Bikālī used to say: "I find in the revealed Book of Allah that Ibn al-Zubayr is the knight of the caliphs." His Religious Standing and His Worship Ḥammād b. Zayd said, from Thābit al-Bunānī: "I used to pass by ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zubayr while he was praying behind the Maqām as if he were a wooden plank set upright, not moving." Al-Aʿmash said, from Yaḥyā b. Waththāb: "When Ibn al-Zubayr prostrated, sparrows would land on his back, going up and down, seeing him only as a wall stump." Others said: "Ibn al-Zubayr would stand in prayer all night until morning, and bow all night until morning, and prostrate all night until morning." Some of them said: "Ibn al-Zubayr bowed one day, and I recited al-Baqarah, Āl ʿImrān, al-Nisāʾ, and al-Māʾidah, and he did not raise his head." ʿAbd al-Razzāq said, from Ibn Jurayj, from ʿAṭāʾ: "When I saw Ibn al-Zubayr praying, it was as if he were a fixed heel." In another narration: "firm." Aḥmad said: "ʿAbd al-Razzāq learned prayer from Ibn Jurayj, and Ibn Jurayj from ʿAṭāʾ, and ʿAṭāʾ from Ibn al-Zubayr, and Ibn al-Zubayr from al-Ṣiddīq, and al-Ṣiddīq from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." From Ibn al-Munkadir, he said: "If you saw Ibn al-Zubayr praying, it was as if he were a branch of a tree shaken by the wind, while the mangonel was falling here and there." Sufyān said: "As if he did not care." Some of them related to ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz that a stone from the mangonel fell on a merlon of the mosque, and a splinter from it flew and passed between Ibn al-Zubayr's beard and his throat, but he did not move from his place, nor was that discernible in his voice. ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz said: "There is no god but Allah; excellent is what you have described." ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz said one day to Ibn Abī Mulaykah: "Describe ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zubayr to us." He said: "By Allah, I have never seen a skin ever placed over flesh, nor flesh over sinews, nor sinews over bone like his, nor have I seen a soul placed between two sides like his soul. A brick from the mangonel shot passed between his beard and his chest, and by Allah, he did not startle, nor did it interrupt his recitation, nor did he bow less than what he used to bow. When he entered prayer, he withdrew from everything to it. He would bow and the vultures would almost land on his back, and he would prostrate as if he were a garment thrown down." Ibn ʿAbbās was asked about Ibn al-Zubayr, and he said: "He was a reciter of the Book of Allah, a follower of the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah, devout to Allah, fasting in the midday heat out of fear of Allah, the son of the Apostle of the Messenger of Allah, and his mother was the daughter of al-Ṣiddīq, and his maternal aunt was ʿĀʾishah, the beloved of the beloved of Allah, the wife of the Messenger of Allah. None is ignorant of his right except one whom Allah has blinded." It was narrated that one day Ibn al-Zubayr was praying when a snake fell from the ceiling and coiled around the belly of his son Hāshim. The women screamed, the household was alarmed, and they gathered to kill that snake. They killed it and the boy was safe. They did all this while Ibn al-Zubayr was in prayer, not turning around, nor knowing what happened to his son until he said the salutation. Al-Zubayr b. Bakkār said that Ibn al-Zubayr used to fast continuously for seven days; he would fast on Friday and not break his fast except on the following Friday night. He would fast in Madinah and not break his fast except in Makkah, and he would fast in Makkah and not break his fast except in Madinah. When he broke his fast, the first thing he broke it with was milk from a milch camel, clarified butter, and aloe. In another narration: "As for milk, it strengthens him; as for clarified butter, it quenches thirst; as for aloe, it opens the intestines." From Ibn Abī Mulaykah, he said: "Ibn al-Zubayr used to fast continuously for seven days, and on the eighth day he would be the most lenient of us." Similar was narrated from more than one source. Some of them said: "He would not eat in the month of Ramadan except once in its middle." Khālid b. Abī ʿImrān said: "Ibn al-Zubayr would not break his fast in a month except for three days, and he remained for forty years without removing his garment from his back." Layth said, from Mujāhid: "No one could withstand what Ibn al-Zubayr could withstand in worship ؓ. A flood once came and covered the House, and Ibn al-Zubayr circumambulated it swimming." Some of them said: "Ibn al-Zubayr was not contested in three things: worship, courage, and eloquence." It is established that ʿUthmān included him among the group who transcribed the muṣḥafs, along with Zayd b. Thābit, Saʿīd b. al-ʿĀṣ, and ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. al-Ḥārith b. Hishām. Saʿīd b. al-Musayyab mentioned him among the orators of Islam, along with Muʿāwiyah and his son, and Saʿīd b. al-ʿĀṣ and his son. ʿAbd al-Wāḥid b. Ayman said: "I saw on Ibn al-Zubayr a Yemeni Aden cloak in which he prayed, and he had a loud voice; when he delivered a sermon, the two mountains Abū Qubays and Zarūd would answer him." Description of ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zubayr He was brown-skinned, thin, not tall. Between his eyes there was a mark of prostration. He was very devoted, diligent, resolute, eloquent, given to much fasting and prayer, fierce in courage, with a sense of pride and noble soul and high aspiration. He had a sparse beard, with little hair on his face except a little. He had a head of hair, and he had a yellowish beard. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zubayr's Witnessing of Battles and His Courage We have mentioned that he witnessed with ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Sarḥ the fighting against the Berbers; they were one hundred twenty thousand, and the Muslims were twenty thousand. The Berbers surrounded them from every side. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zubayr kept maneuvering until he rode with thirty horsemen and went toward the king of the Berbers, who was isolated behind the army, with his slave girls shading him with ostrich feathers. He drove on until he reached him, and the people thought he was going to him with a message. When the king realized, he turned to flee, but ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zubayr caught up with him and killed him, and cut off his head, and placed it on his spear. He proclaimed takbīr, and the Muslims proclaimed takbīr, and they charged upon the Berbers and routed them before them, killing a great number of them and gaining very great spoils. Ibn Abī Sarḥ sent the good news with ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zubayr, and he related the story to ʿUthmān and how it happened. ʿUthmān said to him: "Can you convey this to the people from the pulpit?" He said: "Yes." Ibn al-Zubayr ascended the pulpit and delivered a sermon to the people, mentioning how it happened. ʿAbd Allāh said: "I turned and saw my father al-Zubayr among those present. When I discerned his face, I almost stumbled in speech due to his awe in my heart, but he rebuked me with his eye and gestured to me as if to pelt me with pebbles, so I continued the sermon as I was. When I descended, he said: 'By Allah, it is as if I heard the sermon of Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq when I heard your sermon, my son.'" Aḥmad b. Abī al-Ḥawārī said: I heard Abū Sulaymān al-Dārānī say: "Ibn al-Zubayr went out on a moonlit night on his mount, and he dismounted to urinate. He turned and saw on the mount an old man with white head and beard. Ibn al-Zubayr rushed at him, but he moved away from it, so Ibn al-Zubayr mounted his riding beast and went on. He said: 'The old man called out to him: "By Allah, O Ibn al-Zubayr, if a single hair of mine entered your heart tonight, I would have driven you mad." He said: "Would anything from you, O accursed one, enter my heart?!"'" This story has corroborating accounts from other good sources. From ʿĀmir b. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zubayr, he said: "ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zubayr was returning from ʿUmrah in a group of Quraysh. When they were at al-Tanāḍib, they saw a man by a tree. Ibn al-Zubayr went ahead of them. When he reached him, he greeted him, but the man paid no attention to him and gave a weak reply. Ibn al-Zubayr dismounted, but the man did not move for him. Ibn al-Zubayr said to him: 'Move away from the shade.' He moved aside reluctantly. Ibn al-Zubayr said: 'I sat down, took his hand, and said: "Who are you?" He said: "A man from the jinn." No sooner had he said that than every hair of mine stood on end. I pulled him and said: "You are a man from the jinn and you appear to me like this?" And behold, he had no lower half, and he broke away, and I rebuked him and said: "You appear to me while you are one of the inhabitants of the earth?" So he went fleeing. My companions came and said: "Where is the man who was with you?" I said: "He was one of the jinn and he fled." He said: "There was not a man among them but fell to the ground from his mount. I took each man of them and tied him onto his mount, until I brought them to Amaj while they were unconscious."' Sufyān b. ʿUyaynah said: Ibn al-Zubayr said: "I entered the mosque one night, and there were women circumambulating the House, and they pleased me. When they finished their circumambulation, they went out, and I went out after them to know where their abode was. They went out of Makkah until they came to al-ʿAqabah, then they descended until they came to a mountain pass and entered a ruin. I entered after them, and there were old men sitting. They said: 'What brought you, O Ibn al-Zubayr?' I said to them: 'Who are you?' They said: 'We are the jinn, and those women are our wives. What do you desire, O Ibn al-Zubayr?' I said: 'I desire fresh dates, and there was not a single fresh date in Makkah that day.' They brought me fresh dates, and I ate. Then they said: 'Take what remains with you.' I brought it to the house and placed it in a basket, and put the basket in a chest, then laid my head down to sleep. While I was between sleep and wakefulness, I heard a commotion in the house. Some of them said to others: 'Where did he put it?' They said: 'In the chest.' They opened it, and there it was in the basket inside. They intended to open it, but some of them said: 'He mentioned the name of Allah over it.' So they took the basket with what was in it and went away. He said: 'I did not regret anything as much as I regretted that I did not pounce on them while they were in the house.'" ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zubayr was one of those who defended ʿUthmān on the Day of the House, and he was wounded that day with more than ten wounds. He was in command of the infantry on the Day of the Camel, and he was wounded that day with nineteen wounds also. That day he and Mālik b. al-Ḥārith b. al-Ashtar fought in single combat, and they grappled, and al-Ashtar threw Ibn al-Zubayr down, but al-Ashtar could not get up from him; rather, Ibn al-Zubayr embraced him and kept calling out, saying: "Kill me and Mālik, and kill Mālik with me," so he sent it as a proverb. Then they separated, and al-Ashtar could not get at him. It has been said that he was wounded that day with over forty wounds, and he was only found among the slain with his last breath remaining. ʿĀʾishah gave ten thousand dirhams to the one who brought her the good news that he had not been killed, and she prostrated to God in gratitude. She had loved him with intense love, because he was her sister's son, and he was dear to her. It is related from ʿUrwah that he said: After the Messenger of God ﷺ and Abū Bakr, ʿĀʾishah did not love anyone as she loved ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zubayr. He also said: I never saw my father and ʿĀʾishah pray for anyone among creation as they prayed for Ibn al-Zubayr. Al-Nābighah al-Jaʿdī and ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zubayr From his uncle ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUrwah, he said: The year of famine overwhelmed Nābighah of Banū Jaʿdah, so he entered upon ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zubayr in the Sacred Mosque and recited to him these verses: You have resembled for us al-Ṣiddīq when you ruled us, and ʿUthmān and al-Fārūq, so the destitute rejoiced. You treated people equally in truth, so they became equal; the pitch-black darkness of night returned as morning. Abū Laylā came to you, traversing through the darkness of night, a night-traveler crossing the desert, sturdy and strong. So that you might mend a side of him that the vicissitudes of nights and the relentless time had shattered. Ibn al-Zubayr said to him: "Take it easy, Abū Laylā, for poetry is the easiest of your requests to us. As for the purest of our wealth, it belongs to the family of al-Zubayr. As for the surplus, Banū Asad and Taym occupy it from you. But you have two rights in the wealth of God: a right because you saw the Messenger of God ﷺ, and a right because you share with the people of Islam in their spoil." Then he took him by the hand and brought him into the house of camels, and gave him seven young she-camels, a riding camel, and loaded the mounts with wheat, dates, and clothes. Al-Nābighah began to hurry, and he ate the grain raw. Ibn al-Zubayr said to him: "Woe to Abū Laylā, the hardship has reached its limit." Al-Nābighah said: "I bear witness that I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: 'Quraysh did not assume authority without acting justly; they were not asked for mercy without showing mercy; they did not speak without speaking truth; and they did not promise good without fulfilling it. I and the prophets are the forerunners of the crowds.'" ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zubayr and Muʿāwiyah b. Abī Sufyān Muḥammad b. Marwān, the author of the book "Al-Mujālasah," said: Hishām b. Sulaymān al-Makhzūmī narrated to us from his father, who said: Muʿāwiyah gave permission to the people, and they entered upon him. The assembly was filled, while he was on his couch. He cast his gaze among them and said: "Recite to me three comprehensive verses of the ancient Arabs, from the most comprehensive of what the Arabs have said." Then he said: "O Abā Khubayb." He replied: "What is it?" He said: "Recite that to me." He said: "Yes, O Commander of the Faithful, for three hundred thousand; each verse for one hundred thousand." He said: "Yes, if they match." He said: "You have the choice, and you are faithful and sufficient." So he recited to him from al-Afwah al-Awdī: I have tested people generation after generation, and I saw none but treacherous and slanderous. He said: "He spoke truly." And I saw in calamities nothing more severe in impact and cunning than enmity of men. He said: "He spoke truly." And I tasted the bitterness of all things, and nothing is more bitter than asking. He said: "He spoke truly." Then Muʿāwiyah said: "More, O Abā Khubayb." He said: "It ends here." So Muʿāwiyah called for thirty slaves, on each of whose necks was a purse containing ten thousand dirhams. They passed before Ibn al-Zubayr until they reached his house. From Juwayriyah bt. Asmāʾ, that when Muʿāwiyah performed the pilgrimage, the people met him, and Ibn al-Zubayr stayed behind. Then he came to him after he had shaved his head, and said: "O Commander of the Faithful, how numerous are the pores of your head!" He replied to him: "Be careful, lest a snake comes out of them and kills you." When Muʿāwiyah finished the ifāḍah, Ibn al-Zubayr circumambulated with him, holding his hand. Then he invited him to his house and dwellings at Quʿayqiʿān, and he went with him there. When they came out, he said: "O Commander of the Faithful, the people say: The Commander of the Faithful came with him to his houses and dwellings, so what did he do? By God, I will not leave you until you give me one hundred thousand." So he gave him. Then Marwān came and said: "By God, O Commander of the Faithful, I have never seen the like of you. A man came to you who has named the treasury of the dīwān, the house of the caliphate, and the house of such and such, and you gave him one hundred thousand." He said to him: "Woe to you, what should I do with Ibn al-Zubayr?" From Hishām b. ʿUrwah, he said: ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zubayr asked Muʿāwiyah for something, and he refused him. So he said: "By God, I am not ignorant of staying close to this little building, so as not to insult your honor, nor to slander your lineage. But I will let down my turban a cubit in front of me and a cubit behind me on the road of the people of Syria, and I will mention the conduct of Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq and ʿUmar. People will say: Who is this? They will say: The son of the disciple of the Messenger of God ﷺ and the son of the daughter of al-Ṣiddīq." Muʿāwiyah said: "This is evil enough for you." Then he said: "Bring your needs." From Saʿīd b. Yazīd, he said: Ibn al-Zubayr entered upon Muʿāwiyah, and he ordered a young son of his to slap him with a blow that made his head spin. When Ibn al-Zubayr recovered, he said to the boy: "Come near to me." He came near, and he said to him: "Slap Muʿāwiyah." He said: "I will not do it." He said: "And why?" He said: "Because he is my father." Ibn al-Zubayr raised his hand and slapped the boy with a blow that made him spin like a top. Muʿāwiyah said: "You do this to a boy upon whom the rulings have not yet run?" He said: "By God, he already knows what harms him and what benefits him, so I wanted to improve his manners." Abū al-Ḥasan ʿAlī b. Muḥammad al-Madāʾinī said, from ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Bakr, who said: Ibn al-Zubayr caught up with Muʿāwiyah while he was traveling from Madinah to Syria, and found him dozing on his mount. He said to him: "Do you doze while I am with you? Do you not fear that I might kill you?" He said: "You are not one of those who kill kings. Every bird hunts according to its measure." He said: "Indeed, I marched under the banner of my father against ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib, and he was as you know." He said: "No doubt, by God, he killed you with his left hand." He said: "That was in support of ʿUthmān, and he was not rewarded for it." He said: "It was only out of hatred for ʿAlī, not in support of ʿUthmān." Ibn al-Zubayr said to him: "We have given you a covenant, and we will fulfill it for you as long as you live. So let whoever comes after you know." He said: "By God, I do not fear for you except for your own self. It is as if I see you being struck down in the snare, and the noose tightened upon you. Then you will remember me while you are in it, and you will say: Would that Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān were here, would that I, by God, were here for it. By God, I would loosen you gently and release you quickly, and what a bad protector you would be at that hour." Ibn ʿUyaynah narrated something similar. The conflict between Yazīd b. Muʿāwiyah and ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zubayr It has been previously mentioned that when Muʿāwiyah died and the oath of allegiance to Yazīd b. Muʿāwiyah came to Madinah, Ibn al-Zubayr and al-Ḥusayn b. ʿAlī withdrew from it. They headed to Makkah and stayed there. Then al-Ḥusayn went to Iraq, and the matter of his killing in the land of Karbalāʾ was as previously mentioned. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zubayr remained alone in leadership and sovereignty in Makkah. For this reason Ibn ʿAbbās used to recite after al-Ḥusayn's departure: O you lark in the sanctuary, the sky is empty for you, so lay your eggs and whistle, And peck as much as you wish to peck, alluding to Ibn al-Zubayr. It is said that Yazīd b. Muʿāwiyah wrote to Ibn al-Zubayr saying: I have sent to you a chain of silver and a shackle of gold and a collar of silver, and I have sworn that you will come to me in them, so fulfill my oath and do not break the staff. When he read his letter, he threw it from his hand and said: I will not yield to anything other than the truth, as long as the stone is hard for the teeth of the chewer. The caliphate of ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zubayr When Yazīd b. Muʿāwiyah died, and his son Muʿāwiyah b. Yazīd soon after him, the affair of ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zubayr became very strong. Allegiance was pledged to him in the Hijaz, Iraq, and Egypt. Al-Ḍaḥḥāk b. Qays pledged allegiance to him in Damascus and its districts. But Marwān b. al-Ḥakam opposed him in that, and he did not cease until he killed him and a group at Marj Rāhiṭ, as previously mentioned. So the people of Syria pledged allegiance to him. Then he entered Egypt and seized it from the deputies of Ibn al-Zubayr. Then he dispatched expeditions to Iraq, and he died after appointing his son ʿAbd al-Malik b. Marwān as his successor. He did not cease until Muṣʿab b. al-Zubayr was killed and he took Iraq from him. Then he sent al-Ḥajjāj b. Yūsuf, who besieged Ibn al-Zubayr in Makkah for nearly seven months, until he overcame him on Tuesday, the seventeenth of Jumādā al-Ūlā in the year seventy-three. Ibn al-Zubayr's rule began in the year sixty-four. He led the people in the pilgrimage in all of it, and he rebuilt the Kaʿbah during his days, as the Messenger ﷺ had indicated, and he restored its construction as it had been, as ʿĀʾishah the Mother of the Believers had informed him. He clothed the Kaʿbah with silk, whereas its covering before that was of leather mats and haircloth. The merits and worship of Ibn al-Zubayr Ibn al-Zubayr was a scholar and a devout worshipper, awe-inspiring and dignified, frequent in fasting and prayer, intensely humble, strong in governance. From ʿUmar b. Qays, who said: Ibn al-Zubayr had one hundred servants, each of whom spoke a different language from the other. Ibn al-Zubayr would speak to each of them in his own language. When you looked at him in matters of this world, you would say: This is a man who has not intended God for the blink of an eye. And when you looked at him in matters of the hereafter, you would say: This is a man who has not intended the world for the blink of an eye. Al-Thawrī said, from al-Aʿmash, from Abū al-Ḍuḥā, who said: I saw on the head of Ibn al-Zubayr so much musk that if it had been mine, it would have been my capital. He used to perfume the Kaʿbah until its scent could be found from a great distance. Ibn al-Mubārak said, from Maʿmar, from Ibn Ṭāwūs, from his father, who said: Ibn al-Zubayr entered upon his wife, the daughter of al-Ḥasan, and saw three mattresses, meaning three beddings. He said: This one is for me, this one for the daughter of al-Ḥasan, and this one is for Satan. So they removed it. Al-Thawrī said, from ʿAbd al-Malik b. Abī Bashīr, from ʿAbd Allāh b. Musāwir, who said: I heard Ibn ʿAbbās reproaching Ibn al-Zubayr for miserliness, saying: The Messenger of God ﷺ said: "He is not a believer who sleeps full while his neighbor beside him is hungry." Imām Aḥmad said: ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAmr came to ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zubayr while he was sitting in the Ḥijr and said: "O Ibn al-Zubayr, beware of deviation in the sanctuary of God, for I bear witness that I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: 'A man of Quraysh will violate it and be destroyed by it. If his sins were weighed against the sins of the two heavy ones, they would outweigh them.'" He said: "See that you are not that one, O Ibn ʿAmr, for you have read the books and accompanied the Prophet ﷺ." He said: "I call you to witness that this is my face toward Syria as a warrior." This may be an error in its attribution to the Prophet, and it is rather from the words of ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAmr, from what he learned from the two camel-loads of the sciences of the People of the Book on the day of al-Yarmūk, and God knows best. From Salmān al-Fārisī, he said: This House will surely be burned at the hands of a man from the family of al-Zubayr. From Mundhir al-Thawrī, he said: Ibn al-Ḥanafiyyah said: O God, You know that I knew, from what You taught me, that Ibn al-Zubayr would not leave it except as one killed, with his head paraded in the markets. Al-Zubayr b. Bakkār narrated from Hishām b. ʿUrwah, who said: The first thing that ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zubayr uttered clearly when he was small was "the sword," and he would not remove it from his mouth. When al-Zubayr heard that from him, he would say to him: "By God, there will be for you from it a day, and another day, and days." The miraculous signs of Ibn al-Zubayr after his death The manner of his killing has been previously mentioned: that al-Ḥajjāj crucified him on a trunk above the mountain pass, and that he tied next to him a dead cat, but the scent of musk overpowered its smell. His mother sent to al-Ḥajjāj saying: "May God fight you, why do you crucify my son?" He said: "He and I raced to this piece of wood, and he preceded me to it." His mother came and stood over him and prayed for him at length, without a single tear falling from her eye. Then she left. Likewise, Ibn ʿUmar stood over him and prayed for him and praised him very extensively. Al-Wāqidī said, from ʿAbd Allāh, the client of Asmāʾ, who said: When ʿAbd Allāh was killed, his mother went out to him and stood over him while she was on a mount. Al-Ḥajjāj approached with his companions and asked about her, and was informed. He came and stood before her and said: "How did you see God's victory of the truth and its manifestation?" She said: "Sometimes falsehood prevails over truth, and you are between its refuse and its filth." He said: "Your son committed deviation in this House, and God Almighty has said: 'And whoever intends therein deviation by wrongdoing, We will make him taste a painful punishment.' God has made him taste that painful punishment, cutting off the roads." She said: "You lie. He was the first child born in Islam in Madinah. The Messenger of God ﷺ rejoiced at him, chewed a date and put it in his mouth with his own hand, and the Muslims shouted 'God is great' that day until Madinah shook with joy for him. You and your companions rejoiced at his killing. Those who rejoiced that day are better than you and your companions. Moreover, he was dutiful to his parents, a constant faster, a constant stander in prayer with the Book of God, venerating the sacred things of God, hating that God the Mighty and Majestic be disobeyed. I bear witness from the Messenger of God ﷺ that I heard him say: 'Two liars will emerge from Thaqīf, the latter of them worse than the former, and he is a destroyer.'" So al-Ḥajjāj was humbled and departed. That reached ʿAbd al-Malik, and he wrote to him blaming him for addressing Asmāʾ, saying: "What do you have to do with the daughter of the righteous man?" And from Abū Nawfal, who said: I saw ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zubayr on the pass of al-Madīnah. He said: Quraysh and the people began passing by him, until ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmar passed by him and stopped at him, and said: Peace be upon you, Abā Khubayb; peace be upon you, Abā Khubayb; peace be upon you, Abā Khubayb. Indeed, by God, I had forbidden you from this. Indeed, by God, I had forbidden you from this. Indeed, by God, I had forbidden you from this. Indeed, by God, if I knew anything about you, you were one who fasted much, prayed much, and maintained ties of kinship. Indeed, by God, a community of which you are the worst is a community of good. Then ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmar passed on. The standing of Ibn ʿUmar at him and his words reached al-Ḥajjāj, and he sent for him. He was taken down from his trunk and thrown into the Jewish burial pits. Then he sent to his mother, Asmāʾ bt. Abī Bakr, but she refused to come to him. He sent the messenger back to her: She shall come to me or I shall send someone to drag you by your forelocks. She refused and said: By God, I will not come to him until he sends someone to drag me by my forelocks. He said: Al-Ḥajjāj said: Show me my sandals. So he took his sandals, then went striding until he entered upon her and said: How did you see me deal with the enemy of God? She said: I saw that you ruined his worldly life, and he ruined your hereafter. It has reached me that you say: O son of the woman of the two girdles. I am, by God, the woman of the two girdles. As for one of them, I used to fasten with it the food of the Messenger of God ﷺ and the food of Abū Bakr. As for the other, it is the girdle of a woman, which she cannot do without. Indeed, the Messenger of God ﷺ told us that in Thaqīf there would be a liar and a destroyer. As for the liar, we have seen him. As for the destroyer, I do not think you are anyone but him. He said: He rose from her without answering her. Muslim alone transmitted it. Al-Wāqidī narrated that when al-Ḥajjāj crucified Ibn al-Zubayr on the mountain pass of al-Ḥajūn, Asmāʾ sent to him cursing him and asked him to bury him, but he refused, until he wrote to ʿAbd al-Malik about that, and he wrote to him to bury him. So he was buried at al-Ḥajūn. They mentioned that the scent of musk could be smelled from near his grave. His children and wives He had among children: Khubayb, Ḥamzah, ʿAbbād, and Thābit, whose mother was Tumāḍir bt. Manẓūr al-Fazāriyyah; and Hāshim, Qays, and ʿUrwah—killed with his father—and al-Zubayr, whose mother was Umm Hāshim bt. Ḥullah b. Manẓūr; and ʿĀmir, Mūsā, Umm Ḥakīm, Fāṭimah, and Fākhitah, whose mother was Juthaymah bt. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. al-Ḥārith b. Hishām; and Bakr and Ruqayyah, whose mother was ʿĀʾishah bt. ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān; and ʿAbd Allāh and Muṣʿab from an umm walad. He transmitted thirty-three ḥadīths with isnād. Elegies for Ibn al-Zubayr and his foretelling of his death Ibn al-Zubayr and his brother Muṣʿab were elegized with many fine and eloquent elegies, may God have mercy on them. Among that is the saying of ʿAmr b. Maʿmar al-Dhuhlī, elegizing them in verses: By your life, I have left no need among people, Nor was I one who wore guidance while wavering, On the morning Muṣʿab called me and I answered him, And I said to him: Welcome, and ease, and ample room. Your father was the disciple of the Messenger and his sword, So you are, by God's praise, of the best of us as a father. And that is your brother, guided by his light, In Makkah, calling us with a call that is rewarded. I was not two-faced—one face for Muṣʿab, Sick, and one face for Ibn Marwān when he inclined to passion. I was a man who counseled him sincerely, not preferring Ibn Marwān over him, nor seeking nearness To him with what would make the eye of Muṣʿab sore; But I counseled Muṣʿab sincerely for God's sake, Until calamities cast their arrow at him; To God belongs an arrow—how firm and how true! If this age has destroyed Muṣʿab, And ʿAbd Allāh has become a mutilated corpse, Then every man will drink a draught of death, Even if he swerves from it with all his might and dreads it. When Yazīd b. Muʿāwiyah sent to Ibn al-Zubayr that golden fetter, a chain of silver, and a collar of silver, and swore: You shall come to me in them, they said to him: Fulfill the oath of the Commander of the Faithful. He said: I will not soften to other than the truth for which I ask, Until stone softens for the tooth of the chewer. Then he said: By God, a blow with a sword in honor is dearer to me than a blow with a whip in humiliation. Then he called for allegiance to himself, and openly opposed Yazīd b. Muʿāwiyah. Al-Ṭabarānī narrated that Ibn al-Zubayr entered upon his mother and said: In death there is rest. His mother had reached one hundred years, no tooth of hers had fallen, and her eyesight had not deteriorated. She said to him: I would not love to die until I see one of your two ends: either you rule and my eye is gladdened, or you are killed and I seek reward for you. Then he went out from her, saying: I am not one who buys life with disgrace, Nor one who climbs from fear of death a ladder. Then he turned to the family of al-Zubayr, admonishing them and saying: Let each of you conceal his sword as he conceals his face, and defend himself with his hand as if he were a woman. By God, I have never met an army except in the first squadron, and I have never felt pain from a wound except the pain of medicine. Then he charged against them, with two swords with him. The first to meet him was al-Aswad, and he struck him with his sword until he severed his leg. Al-Aswad said to him: Ouch, son of the adulteress! Ibn al-Zubayr said to him: Be off, son of Ḥām! Is Asmāʾ an adulteress?! Then he drove them out of the mosque. On the roof of the mosque was a group of his supporters throwing bricks at his enemies. A brick from his supporters struck him unintentionally on the crown of his head, splitting his head. He stood upright, saying: Had my generation been one, I would have sufficed it. And he said: We are not ones on our heels whose wounds bleed, But on our feet the blood drips. Then he fell, and two of his mawālī bent over him, saying: The slave protects his lord and seeks protection. Then they sent to him and cut off his head. Al-Ṭabarānī also narrated from Isḥāq b. Abī Isḥāq, who said: I was present at the killing of ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zubayr in the Sacred Mosque. On the day he was killed, the armies began entering from the gates of the mosque, and every time a group entered from a gate, he charged at them until he drove them out. While he was in that state, a battlement from one of the battlements of the mosque came and fell on his head and knocked him down, while he was reciting these verses: Asmāʾ, O Asmāʾ, do not weep for me; Nothing remains but my noble lineage and my religion, And a sharp sword which my right hand has made supple. It has been narrated that his mother said to al-Ḥajjāj: Is it not time for this rider to dismount? Al-Ḥajjāj said: Your son, the hypocrite? She said: By God, he was no hypocrite. He was one who fasted much, prayed much, and maintained ties of kinship. He said: Go away, old woman, for you have become senile. She said: By God, I have not become senile since I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: There will come from Thaqīf a liar and a destroyer. As for the liar, we have seen him; as for the destroyer, it is you. What was said about Ibn al-Zubayr after his death Mujāhid said: I was with Ibn ʿUmar, and he passed by Ibn al-Zubayr. He stopped, asked mercy for him, and praised him, then turned to me and said: Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq informed me that the Messenger of God ﷺ said: Whoever does evil will be recompensed for it. Sermons and speeches of Ibn al-Zubayr Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Thaqafī said: I witnessed the sermon of Ibn al-Zubayr at the pilgrimage season. He came out to us one day before al-Tarwiyah, in iḥrām, and pronounced the talbiyah with the finest talbiyah I have ever heard. Then he praised God and extolled Him, then said: To proceed: You have come from various horizons as delegations to God, mighty and majestic. It is incumbent upon God to honor His delegation. Whoever among you seeks what is with God, the seeker of what is with God will not fail. So make your words true with deeds, for the essence of words is deeds. Intention, intention; hearts, hearts. God, God, in these days of yours, for they are days in which sins are forgiven. You have come from various horizons, not for trade, nor seeking wealth, nor a worldly life you hope for here. Then he pronounced the talbiyah and the people pronounced it. I never saw more weepers than on that day. From Wahb b. Kaysān, who said: A sermon was written to ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zubayr: To proceed: The people of piety have marks by which they are known, and which they recognize in themselves: truthfulness of speech, fulfillment of trust, suppression of anger, patience in affliction, contentment with decree, gratitude for blessings, and submission to the judgment of the Qurʾān. The leader is like a market; whatever is in demand there is brought to it. If truth is in demand with him, it is brought to him and its people come to him; if falsehood is in demand with him, it is brought to him and its people come to him. From Wahb b. Kaysān, who said: I never saw Ibn al-Zubayr submit to anyone out of desire or fear of a ruler or anyone else. With this chain, the people of Syria used to taunt Ibn al-Zubayr and say to him: O son of the woman of the two girdles. Asmāʾ said to him: O my son, they taunt you with the two girdles. I had only one girdle, which I tore in two. I put one half in the travel bag of the Messenger of God ﷺ, and tied his water skin with the other, when he and Abū Bakr set out intending the emigration to al-Madīnah. After that, when they taunted Ibn al-Zubayr with the two girdles, he would say: Indeed, by God: That is a fault whose shame is manifest from you. And God, glorified and exalted, knows best. The story of "Indeed, and its rider" It was transmitted from Abū ʿUbaydah, who said: ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zubayr al-Asadī came to ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zubayr b. al-ʿAwwām and said: O Commander of the Faithful, there is kinship between me and you through so-and-so. Ibn al-Zubayr said: Yes, it is as you mentioned. And if you think about this... you are right; all people go back to one father and one mother. He said: O Commander of the Faithful, my provisions are exhausted. He said: Had you not guaranteed your family that it would suffice you until you return to them? He said: O Commander of the Faithful, my she-camel has become footsore. He said: Take her to high ground so that her hoof cools, patch her with palm-leaf fiber, lower her with coarse hair, and travel on her in the two cool periods. He said: O Commander of the Faithful, I came to you asking for a mount, not asking for advice. God curse a she-camel that carried me to you! Ibn al-Zubayr said: Indeed, and its rider! The Asadī went out and began to recite: I see needs at Abū Khubayb's are thwarted, and no Umayyad is in the land, from al-Aʿyāṣ or from the family of Ḥarb, a noble one like the blaze of a swift horse. I said to my companions: Bring my mounts near, so I may leave the belly of Makkah in darkness. And I have no return, when I cross Dhāt ʿIrq, to the son of the Kāhiliyyah! ʿAbd al-Razzāq transmitted in his Muṣannaf from al-Zuhrī, who said: No head was ever brought to the Messenger of God ﷺ in al-Madīnah, nor on the day of Badr. A head was brought to Abū Bakr—that thought of his. The first to whom heads were brought was ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zubayr.
