Translation
✧ The First Day of al-Tharthār Al-Tharthār is a river whose source originates east of Sinjār, near a village called Surraq, and it empties into the Tigris between al-Kaḥīl and Raʾs al-Ayl in the district of al-Faraj. When those we have mentioned were killed at Mākisīn, Taghlib sought reinforcements and mobilized, and al-Namir b. Qāsiṭ joined them, and al-Mushajjar b. al-Ḥārith al-Shaybānī came to them—he was one of their chiefs in the Jazīrah—and ʿUbayd Allāh b. Ziyād b. Ẓabyān came to them as an ally against Qays. For that reason Muṣʿab b. al-Zubayr bore a grudge against him until he killed his brother al-Nābiʾ b. Ziyād. ʿUmayr sought the aid of Tamīm and Asad, but none of them came to his aid. They met at al-Tharthār, and Taghlib had placed after Shuʿayb Ziyād b. Hawbar—and it is said Yazīd b. Hawbar al-Taghlibī—in command over them. They fought a fierce battle, and Qays was routed, and Taghlib and those with them inflicted a great slaughter upon them, and they ripped open the bellies of thirty women of Banū Sulaym. Laylā bt. al-Ḥārith al-Taghlibiyya said—and it is said the verses belong to al-Akhṭal: When they saw us, with the cross appearing, and Mār Sarjīs and deadly poison, And the horses carrying none but the armored, And the white blades in our right hands, cutting, They abandoned to us al-Tharthār and the sown fields, And abundant wheat and ripening vines.
