The story of Moses the one who spoke with Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)
Translation
✧ Al-Ḥāfiẓ Abū Nuʿaym al-Aṣbahānī said with his chain on the authority of Abū Umāmah that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to his companions: "Shall I not tell you about al-Khiḍr?" They said: "Yes, O Messenger of Allah." He said: "While he was one day walking in the market of the Children of Israel, a man who was a mukātab (a slave with a contract of manumission) saw him and said: 'Give me charity, may Allah bless you.' Al-Khiḍr said: 'I believe in Allah. Whatever Allah wills of a matter comes to pass. I have nothing to give you.' The poor man said: 'I ask you by the Face of Allah to give me charity, for I have seen the mark of goodness in your face and hoped for blessing from you.' Al-Khiḍr said: 'I believe in Allah. I have nothing to give you, unless you take me and sell me.' The poor man said: 'Is this proper?' He said: 'Yes, I tell you the truth. You have asked me by a great matter. Indeed I will not disappoint you in the Face of my Lord. Sell me.' He said: So he brought him to the market and sold him for four hundred dirhams. He remained with the buyer for a time, and the buyer did not employ him in anything. So he said to him: 'You bought me only seeking good from me, so command me to some work.' He said: 'I dislike to burden you; you are an old, weak man.' He said: 'It will not burden me.' He said: 'Then move these stones.' They were such that no fewer than six men could move them in a day. The man went out for some need of his, then returned and found that he had moved the stones in an hour. He said: 'You have done well and excelled, and you have been able to do what I did not see you able to do.' Then travel was offered to the man, and he said: 'I consider you trustworthy, so be my deputy over my family with a good deputyship.' He said: 'Command me to some work.' He said: 'I dislike to burden you.' He said: 'It will not burden me.' He said: 'Then make bricks for my house until I come back to you.' The man went on his journey and returned to find that he had raised his building high. He said: 'I ask you by the Face of Allah, what is your way and what is your affair?' He said: 'You asked me by the Face of Allah, and asking by the Face of Allah is what cast me into slavery. I will tell you who I am. I am al-Khiḍr of whom you have heard. A poor man asked me for charity, and I had nothing to give him. He asked me by the Face of Allah, so I put my neck in his power, and he sold me. And I tell you that whoever is asked by the Face of Allah and rejects his asker while he is able, will stand on the Day of Resurrection with skin but no flesh and no bone, rattling.' The man said: 'I believe in Allah. I have burdened you, O Prophet of Allah, and I did not know.' He said: 'No harm, you did well and kept me.' The man said: 'By my father and mother, O Prophet of Allah, judge in my family and wealth with what Allah shows you, or I give you the choice and let you go your way.' He said: 'I would like you to let me go my way so that I may worship my Lord.' So he let him go his way. Al-Khiḍr said: 'Praise be to Allah who cast me into slavery and then saved me from it.' This is a ḥadīth whose attribution to the Prophet is a mistake; it is more likely to be mawqūf (attributed to a Companion), and among its narrators are those who are unknown. Allah knows best. Ibn al-Jawzī narrated it in his book ʿUjālat al-Muntaẓir fī Sharḥ Ḥāl al-Khiḍr through the route of ʿAbd al-Wahhāb b. al-Ḍaḥḥāk, who is matrūk (abandoned), from Baqiyyah.
