✧ The Rebellion of the Jarājima in Syria When ʿAmr b. Saʿīd withheld allegiance from ʿAbd al-Malik, a commander from the commanders of the outlying districts in Mount al-Lukkām also revolted, and a great many of the Jarājima, the Anbāṭ, fugitive slaves of the Muslims, and others followed him. Then he marched to Lebanon. When ʿAbd al-Malik was done with ʿAmr, he sent to this rebel, offering him a thousand dinars every Friday. The man inclined to that and did not cause corruption in the lands. Then ʿAbd al-Malik set Suḥaym b. al-Muhājir upon him. Suḥaym acted gently until he reached him in disguise, showed him support, reviled and insulted ʿAbd al-Malik, and promised to show him his weak points and what would be better for him than peace. So he trusted him. Then Suḥaym fell upon him and his companions while they were heedless and unaware, with an army along with the clients of ʿAbd al-Malik and the Banū Umayya and a contingent of his trusted and brave troops whom he had stationed in a hidden nearby place. He ordered that a proclamation be made: 'Whoever comes to us from the slaves,' meaning those who were with him, 'is free and will be registered in the dīwān.' A great many of them defected to him and were among those who fought with him. The rebel and those of the Byzantines who aided him were killed, and a number of the Jarājima and Anbāṭ were killed. A herald proclaimed safety for those of them who were encountered, so they dispersed to their villages, the breach was closed, and he returned to ʿAbd al-Malik and fulfilled his promise to the slaves.
