✧ Among those who died in the year sixty-eight of the notables: ʿAbdullāh b. Yazīd al-Awsī — he witnessed al-Ḥudaybiyah. And ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. al-Aswad b. ʿAbd Yaghūth. And ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Zayd b. al-Khaṭṭāb al-ʿAdawī, the nephew of ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb. He met the Prophet ﷺ, and died in al-Madīnah at about seventy years of age. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Ḥassān b. Thābit al-Anṣārī. ʿAdī b. Ḥātim al-Ṭāʾī — ʿAdī b. Ḥātim al-Ṭāʾī, whose mother was al-Nawwār bt. Barmakah b. ʿUkl, and whose kunyah was Abū Ṭarīf: From Abū ʿUmayr al-Ṭāʾī, who said: ʿAdī b. Ḥātim used to say: There was no man among the Arabs who hated the Messenger of Allah ﷺ more than I did. I was a noble man who had become chief of my people, and I said: If I follow him, I shall be lowly. I was a Christian, so I said to a servant of mine: Prepare for me from my camels strong, docile, fat ones that I will keep near me. When you hear that the army of Muḥammad has trodden these lands, inform me, for I see that his cavalry have trodden all the lands of the Arabs. Then one morning my servant came to me and said: Whatever you would do when the cavalry of Muḥammad overtake you, do it now, for I have seen banners and asked about them, and it was said: These are the armies of Muḥammad. I said: Bring my camels near. He brought them, and I loaded my family and children, then I said: I shall join my co-religionists among the Christians in Syria. And I left behind the daughter of Ḥātim in the settlement. Then the cavalry of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ overtook me, and they raided the dwelling of the family of Ḥātim, capturing women and children and sheep and the daughter of Ḥātim. She was brought to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and the Prophet ﷺ had learned of my flight. The daughter of Ḥātim was placed in an enclosure by the door of the mosque — where the women captives were kept — and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed by her. She stood up to him, and she was a beautiful and eloquent woman. She said: O Messenger of Allah, the father has died and the protector is absent, so show kindness to me, may Allah be kind to you. He said: I shall do so. Do not be hasty to leave until you find someone from your people whom you can trust. In another version: She said: O Messenger of Allah, the father has perished and the protector is absent, so show kindness to me, may Allah be kind to you. He said: Who is your protector? She said: ʿAdī b. Ḥātim. He said: The one who flees from Allah and His Messenger? She said: Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went on and left me. When it was the next day, he passed by me and I said the same thing, and he said the same thing. When it was the day after that, he passed by me and I had given up hope, so I said nothing. A man behind him gestured to me: Stand up and speak to him. So I stood and said: O Messenger of Allah, the father has perished and the protector is absent, so show kindness to me, may Allah be kind to you. He said: I have done so. Do not be hasty to leave until you find someone from your people whom you can trust to convey you to your land, then let me know. She said: I asked about the man who gestured to me to speak to him, and it was said: He is ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib. I stayed until a riding party from Quḍāʿah arrived. She said: I only wanted to go to my brother in Syria. I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: Some of my people have come whom I trust and who can convey me. So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ clothed me, gave me a mount, and gave me spending money, and I departed with them until I reached Syria. ʿAdī said: By Allah, I was sitting with my family when I saw a woman's litter descending toward us, heading for us. I said: The daughter of Ḥātim! And indeed it was she. When she reached me, she burst out saying: O you who cut off ties and wronged me! You carried away your family and children and left behind the remnant of your father. I said: Sister, say only what is good. Then I said: By Allah, I have no excuse; I did what you mentioned. Then she dismounted and stayed with me. I said: What do you think about the affair of this man? She was resolute — and she was indeed a resolute woman — and she said: I think, by Allah, that you should hasten to join him. If the man is a prophet, then the foremost to him is best; and if he is a king, you will not be humiliated in the might of Yemen. You are you, and your father is your father. Besides, I have been told that the elite of his companions are your people, the Aws and the Khazraj. So I set out until I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. I entered while he was in his mosque, and I greeted him. He said: Who is the man? I said: ʿAdī b. Ḥātim. Then he took me to his house. By Allah, while he was taking me to his house, a weak old woman met him and stopped him. He stood with her for a long time while she spoke to him about her need. I said to myself: By Allah, this is not a king. A king's manner is different from this. Then he went on, and when he entered his house, he took a cushion of tanned leather stuffed with palm fiber and handed it to me, saying: 'Sit on this.' I said: No, you sit on it. So he sat on it. He saw on my neck an idol of gold, and he recited this verse: They have taken their rabbis and their monks as lords besides Allah [9:31]. I said: By Allah, they did not worship them. He said: 'Was it not that when they made something lawful for them, they deemed it lawful, and when they forbade them something, they forbade it?' I said: Yes. He said: 'That is their worship.' And he said: 'Listen, O ʿAdī, were you not taking from your people the fourth part of the booty? That was not lawful for you in your religion.' I said: Yes, by Allah. Then I knew that he was a sent prophet. Then he said: 'Perhaps, O ʿAdī, what prevents you from entering this religion is what you see of their poverty. By Allah, this wealth will soon overflow among them until no one is found to accept it. And perhaps what prevents you is what you see of the large number of their enemies and the smallness of their own number. By Allah, you will soon hear of a woman setting out from al-Qādisiyyah on a camel to visit this House, fearing no one. And perhaps what prevents you from entering is that kingship and authority are with others. By Allah, you will soon hear of the white palaces of the land of Babylon being conquered for them.' ʿAdī said: So I became a Muslim. And ʿAdī used to say: Two have passed, and one remains: that wealth will overflow. The scholars of biography said: When ʿAdī came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he embraced Islam and his Islam was good, and he returned to the land of his people. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ died and the Arabs apostatized, ʿAdī and his people remained firm in Islam, and he brought their alms to Abū Bakr. He was present at the conquest of al-Madāʾin, and he witnessed with ʿAlī the battles of al-Jamal, Ṣiffīn, and al-Nahrawān. He was generous, crumbling bread for the ants and saying: They are neighbors. From al-Shaʿbī, from ʿAdī b. Ḥātim al-Ṭāʾī: that he came to ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb with some people from Ṭayyīʾ — or he said: from his people — and ʿUmar began assigning stipends of two thousand, two thousand to men of Ṭayyīʾ. I faced him, and he turned away from me. I said: O Commander of the Faithful, do you not know me? He said: Yes, by Allah, I know you. You became a Muslim when they disbelieved, and you came forward when they turned back, and you were loyal when they betrayed. The first alms that brightened the face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and the faces of his companions were the alms of Ṭayyīʾ, which you brought to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. From ʿĀmir, who said: Al-Ashʿath b. Qays sent to ʿAdī b. Ḥātim asking to borrow the cooking pots of Ḥātim. ʿAdī ordered them filled, and men carried them to al-Ashʿath. Al-Ashʿath sent word: I only wanted them empty. ʿAdī sent back to him: We do not lend them empty. From Muḥammad b. Saʿd, who said: ʿAdī b. Ḥātim died in the year sixty-eight. Hishām b. al-Kalbī said: He died in the year sixty-nine, at the age of one hundred and twenty years. They differed as to where he died, with two opinions: one, in al-Kūfah — said by Ibn Khayyāṭ; and the second, in Qarqīsiyāʾ. From al-Mughīrah, who said: ʿAdī b. Ḥātim, Jarīr b. ʿAbdallāh, and Ḥanẓalah al-Kātib left al-Kūfah and settled in Qarqīsiyāʾ, saying: We will not reside in a land where ʿUthmān is reviled. Ibn Thābit said: Muḥammad b. ʿAlī al-Ṣūrī said to me: I myself saw their graves in Qarqīsiyāʾ. And in this year died: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Ḥāṭib b. Abī Baltaʿah — and it is said that he was born in the time of the Prophet ﷺ. And Zayd b. Arqam b. Zayd, a noble companion. Abū Shurayḥ al-Khuzāʿī al-ʿAdawī — in this year died Abū Shurayḥ al-Khuzāʿī al-ʿAdawī al-Kaʿbī. There is disagreement about his name, with several opinions; the soundest is Khuwaylid b. ʿAmr. He embraced Islam in the year of the conquest, and he carried one of the three banners of Banū Kaʿb. Muḥammad b. Saʿd said: He died in this year, and he has ḥadīths. Ḥumayd b. Thawr al-Hilālī — Ḥumayd b. Thawr al-Hilālī, the famous poet. He composed poetry in the days of ʿUmar, and he is one of the great poets. Abū Wāqid al-Laythī — al-Ḥārith b. Mālik — and it is said: al-Ḥārith b. ʿAwf, and it is said: ʿAwf b. al-Ḥārith — Abū Wāqid al-Laythī: He embraced Islam early, and he carried the banner of Banū Layth, Ḍamrah, and Saʿd b. Bakr on the day of the conquest. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent him, when he wanted to set out for Tabūk, to summon Banū Layth. He went to Makkah and lived as a neighbor there, and died in this year at the age of eighty-five. He was buried in Makkah in the graveyard of the Emigrants, which is in Fajj. It was called the graveyard of the Emigrants because those who died among those who had emigrated to al-Madīnah were buried there. ʿĀbis b. Saʿīd al-Quṭayfī, judge of Egypt — ʿĀbis b. Saʿīd al-Quṭayfī, judge of Egypt: He held the judiciary and the police for Maslamah b. Mukhallad. Abū Qutayl al-Maghāfirī narrated from him. And he died in this year. Qays b. Dharīḥ b. al-Ḥubāb — Qays b. Dharīḥ b. al-Ḥubāb b. Shabbah b. Ḥudhāfah: He was the foster brother of al-Ḥusayn b. ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib; the mother of Qays had suckled him. His people's dwelling was on the outskirts of al-Madīnah, and he and his father were among the settled residents of al-Madīnah. And it is said: His dwelling was in Saraf. Qays passed by, on some errand, the tents of Banū Kaʿb of Khuzāʿah while the tribe was away. He stopped at a tent belonging to Lubnā bt. al-Ḥubāb al-Kaʿbī, and asked for water. She came out to him and gave him water. She was a woman of tall stature, of a tawny complexion, sweet in appearance and speech. When he saw her, she fell into his heart, and he drank the water. She said to him: Dismount and cool yourself with us. So he dismounted with them. Her father came and slaughtered an animal for him and honored him. Qays departed with in his heart for Lubnā a fire that could not be quenched, and he began composing poetry about her until it spread and was transmitted. Then he came to her another day, his longing for her having grown intense. He greeted her, and she appeared to him and returned his greeting and stayed with him. He complained to her of what he felt of love for her, and she wept and complained to him of the like. Each of them learned what the other had for him. Then he went to his father and told him of his state and asked him to marry him to her. His father refused and said: My son, take one of your cousins' daughters; they are more entitled to you. Dharīḥ was a wealthy man of means, and he did not want to marry his son to a stranger. Qays departed, grieved by what his father had said to him. He came to his mother and complained to her and sought her help with his father, but he did not find with her what he liked. So he came to al-Ḥusayn b. ʿAlī ؓ and Ibn Abī ʿAtīq, who was his friend, and complained to them of what was in him and of what his parents had refused him. Al-Ḥusayn said to him: I will suffice you. He walked with him to the father of Lubnā. When the father saw him, he held him in great esteem and jumped up to him, saying: O son of the Messenger of Allah, what is your need? He said: What I have come for requires that I come to you. I have come to you to ask for your daughter Lubnā for Qays b. Dharīḥ. The father said: O son of the Messenger of Allah, we would never disobey a command of yours, and we have no aversion to the young man. But the more beloved of the two matters to us is that Dharīḥ, his father, should ask for her, and that that should be by his order. For we fear, if his father is not generous in this, that it will become a disgrace to us. So al-Ḥusayn came to Dharīḥ while his people were gathered. They stood up to him in honor and said to him the like of what the Khuzāʿīs had said. He said to Dharīḥ: I adjure you not to refuse to ask for Lubnā for Qays. He said: Hearing and obedience to your command. So he went out with him among the notables of his people until they came to the tribe of Lubnā. Dharīḥ asked for her for his son from her father, and he married him to her. She was conducted to him, and he stayed with her for a while. He was the most dutiful of people to his mother, but Lubnā and his devotion to her distracted him from some of that. His mother felt it and took it to heart, and said: This woman has distracted my son from his dutifulness to me. Qays fell ill, and his mother said to his father: I fear he will die without leaving offspring, and he has been denied children from this woman. You are a man of wealth, and your wealth will go to distant relatives. Marry him to another; perhaps Allah will grant him a child. She insisted on that. When his people gathered, his father called him and said: O Qays, you have fallen ill, and I fear for you. I have no son other than you, and this woman is not childbearing. Marry one of your cousins' daughters; perhaps Allah will grant you a child in whom your eye and our eyes will find comfort. Qays said: I will never marry anyone other than her. His father said: Then take concubines. He said: I will not grieve her with anything, by Allah, ever. His father said: Then I adjure you to divorce her. He refused and said: Death, by Allah, is easier to me than that. But I offer you a choice of one of three options. He said: What are they? He said: You marry; perhaps Allah will grant you a son other than me. He said: I have no desire left for that. He said: Then let me depart with my family from you, and do what you would do if I had died in this illness of mine. He said: Not this either. He said: Then I will leave Lubnā with you and depart from you; perhaps I may forget her, for I do not love that after you my soul should be at ease, for she is in my mind. He said: I will not be content unless you divorce her. And he swore that no roof would ever shelter him until he divorced Lubnā. He would go out and stand in the heat of the sun. Qays would come and stand beside him, shading him with his cloak while he himself endured the heat of the sun. Then he would go in to Lubnā, embrace her, and weep, and she would weep with him, saying to him: O Qays, do not obey your father, lest you perish and cause me to perish. He would say: I will never obey anyone concerning you. It is said that he remained like this for a year — and it is said: for twenty years — and his parents shunned him and would not speak to him. The divorce of Qays from Lubnā — so he divorced her. When he divorced her, his mind was snatched away, and something like madness came upon him. He began to weep. The news reached her, and she sent to her father to carry her away. Her father came with a litter and camels. Qays said: What is this? They said: Lubnā is departing tonight or tomorrow. He fell down in a faint, then revived, and began to say: Indeed I exhaust the tears of my eyes with weeping, in dread of what has been or what will be. They said: Tomorrow, or after that by a night, comes the parting of a beloved who has not departed yet is departing. I did not fear that my death would be by your two hands, except that what has come has come. And he said: They say: ‘Lubnā is a trial; before her you were fine, so do not regret her, and divorce [her].’ So I obeyed my enemies and disobeyed my sincere adviser, and I gladdened the eye of the gloating hypocrite. I wish—by the House of Allah—that I had disobeyed them, and had borne every covenant in her good pleasure. And I was charged with plunging into the sea while the sea was surging; I refused, upon the crests of a drowning wave. It is as if I see loving people, after her, [as] the squeezed juice of the split colocynth. My eye, after her, denies every sight, and my hearing, after her, dislikes every speech. And a crow alighted near him and began to caw repeatedly, so he took it as an evil omen and said: A crow cawed at Lubnā's departure, and the heart flew in fear of the crow. It said: ‘Tomorrow Lubnā's abode will be far, and she will be distant after love and closeness.’ I said: ‘May you perish—woe to you—as a crow, for your effort has ever been in destruction.’ When she mounted her howdah, he followed her and said: O crow of separation, will you inform me of good as you informed of distance and evil? You said: ‘Thus is time, ever calamitous.’ You spoke truly; is anything lasting through time? Then he knew that they were preventing him from her, so he stood looking at them until they disappeared, then turned back, looking at the trace of her camel's hoof, kissing it and kissing the place where she sat and the trace of her foot. They reproached him for kissing the dust, so he said: I did not love your ground, but I kiss the trace of one who trod the dust. I have met, from my passion for Lubnā, a trial whose drink I cannot swallow. When the caller calls out the name of Lubnā, I am struck dumb and cannot answer him. One of the physicians said to him: ‘How long have you felt for this woman what you feel?’ He said: My soul clung to her soul before our creation, and after we were drops and in the cradle. . So it increased as we increased and became growing, and it is not cut off by our death. But it remains through every occurrence, and visits us in the darkness of the grave and the tomb-niche. The physician said to him: ‘It would console you from her to recall her faults and what the soul loathes of the filth of Adam's children.’ He said: When I would fault her, I likened her to the rising full moon; and enough of a fault for her is resemblance to the full moon. Lubnā is favored above people as the Night of Decree is favored above a thousand months. When she walks a span of ground, she is shaken by shortness of breath until she does not exceed a span. She has a buttock that quivers as she walks, and a figure like a willow branch, slender of waist. His father entered while the physician was with him, and began reproaching him, saying: ‘My son, fear Allah, fear Allah for yourself, for if you persist in this you will die.’ He said: In ‘Urwah al-ʿUdhrī, if I die, there is an example, and in ʿAmr b. ʿAjlān whom Hind killed. And in me is the like of what they died of, except that I have a term whose time has not yet come. He also said: Is love anything but a tear after a sigh, and heat upon the bowels that has no coolness, And a flood of tears that pours forth when a landmark from your land appears to us that had not been appearing? He said: When what was in Qays had lasted long, his people advised his father to marry him to a beautiful woman, perhaps he would find consolation in her. He called him to that but he refused. His father informed them of what he had replied, so they said to him: ‘Command him to travel among the Arab encampments and stay with them, perhaps he will see a woman who pleases him.’ He made him swear to do it, so he traveled until he halted at a clan and saw a slave-girl like the full moon. He said: ‘What is your name, slave-girl?’ She said: ‘Lubnā.’ He fell on his face, and she was alarmed and said: ‘If this is not Qays b. Dhurayḥ, he is indeed possessed.’ When he recovered, she asked him to eat some of their food, so he ate and departed. Her brother came and saw the place where the camel had knelt, overtook him and brought him back, and did not cease until he married him to his sister. When she was led to him, he paid no attention to her. Lubnā's marriage His story reached Lubnā, and she said: He is indeed treacherous. I had been refraining from marriage, but now I will marry. So she was married, and his anguish became intense. Lubnā's father traveled to Muʿāwiyah and complained to him that he was pursuing Lubnā after the divorce. So he wrote to him ordering that his blood be shed with impunity. Lubnā sent to him warning him, so he said: If they veil her, or if between me and union with her comes the speech of a slanderer or the threat of an emir, They will not prevent my eyes from constant weeping, nor remove what my conscience conceals. To Allah I complain of what I meet from passion, and of burning griefs and sighs that afflict me, And of the heat of love within the depths of my vitals, and of a night long in sorrow, not short. We were together, before passion appeared, in the most pleasant state of felicity and joy. The slanderers did not cease until the inner sides of passion appeared to them turned inside out. You were enough for the soul, had our union lasted; but the world is but the enjoyment of delusion. Then after that he performed the pilgrimage and she performed the pilgrimage, and he met her and stood dumbfounded, and she sent him greetings. Then he set aside a portion of his camels and informed his father that he intended to take them to Madinah to sell them and buy provisions for his family with their price. His father knew that he only wanted Lubnā, and reproached him, but he did not accept, and went to Madinah. While he was displaying them, Lubnā's husband bargained with him for one of the camels, neither recognizing the other, and he sold it to him. He said: ‘Tomorrow come to me at the house of Kathīr b. al-Ṣalt and receive the price.’ He went away. Lubnā's husband said to her: ‘I bought a camel from a Bedouin man, and he will come to us tomorrow to receive the price, so prepare food for him.’ She did so. Next day he came and called to the servant, saying: ‘Tell your master: the owner of the camel is at the door.’ Lubnā recognized his voice but said nothing. Her husband said to the servant: ‘Tell him to enter.’ He entered and sat down. Lubnā said to the servant: Say to him: ‘What is wrong with you, disheveled and dusty?’ She said it to him, and he sighed and said: ‘Such is the condition of one who has parted from loved ones,’ and wept. Lubnā said: ‘Tell him: relate to us your story.’ When he began to speak she removed the veil, and he was dumbfounded and could not speak, then wept and rose to leave. Her husband called to him: ‘What is your story? Come back and receive the price.’ He did not speak to him and went out. Lubnā said to her husband: ‘This, by Allah, is Qays.’ And he said on his way about her: Will you weep for Lubnā while you yourself left her, though you were more capable over her in public? If the world has turned its back on Lubnā, time and the world have bellies and backs. There was in her a place for faithfulness, a realm for the hand, and a sight for the eye. It is as if I am a swing between ropes when a memory of her crosses my heart. Then he returned to his dwelling and fell ill with a sickness from which he nearly died. His father and family entered and reproached him. He said: ‘Woe to you! Do you think I made myself ill, or that I found consolation and chose affliction, or that I have any hand in this? This is what my parents chose for me, and they have killed me by it.’ His father began weeping and praying for his relief. Lubnā sent a man to him secretly, saying: ‘Ask him: Why did you marry after her?’ The man came and asked him, and he swore to him that his eye had never been adorned by the woman he married, that if he saw her among women he would not recognize her, and that he had never stretched out a hand to her nor uncovered a garment of hers. He said: ‘Then convey from me to her whatever you wish.’ He said: Greet Lubnā today if you are leaving early, and visit her before you can no longer meet. And say: I, by the dancing women [going] to Minā, on the mountains of Muzdalifah, watching the caller, I guard you from some matters out of suspicion, and I fear for you the hateful enemies. I say, when my soul rises with a sigh of passionate love that afflicts me, it is what it is. And between my vitals and chest there is a burning and a pang of passion that leaves the heart bewildered. Would that Lubnā had never been a beloved to us, and that Lubnā had never seen me, and that I did not know what she is. My two friends, why have I been afflicted, and I see Lubayna, despite separation, only as she is? I grieved for her; would that I could find a way to grieve, and I exhausted the tears of my eyes, if they could be exhausted. Nights and months pass, and I do not see my infatuation with her increase except in persistence. Qays's affair became famous in Madinah, and al-Gharīḍ, Mālik, Maʿbad, and others sang his poetry. No noble or lowly person remained who had not heard of it and grieved for him. Lubnā's husband came and reproached her, saying: ‘He has disgraced me by mentioning you.’ She said: ‘By Allah, I did not marry you except after his blood was declared forfeit, and I have no need of you.’ In Madinah there was a hospitality house belonging to a man of Quraysh, and he had a wife called Buraykah. Qays entered the house in his madness and said: ‘Where is Buraykah?’ He met her and said to her: ‘My need is a look at Lubnā.’ She said: ‘You shall have that.’ He stopped and stayed with them, and gave her many gifts, and said: ‘Be kind to them until they feel at ease with you.’ She did so and visited them several times. She said to Lubnā's husband: ‘Tell me: are you better than my husband?!’ He said: ‘No.’ She said: ‘Is Lubnā better than me?!’ He said: ‘No.’ She said: ‘Then why do I visit her and she does not visit me?!’ He said: ‘That is up to her.’ She came to her and asked her to visit, and informed her that Qays was with her. She hastened to her, and they wept until they nearly perished. Then she said to him: ‘Recite to me what you said in your illness,’ and he said: I tend from my soul the remnants of a last breath, in thirst, while the visiting women return. When Lubnā is mentioned, I brighten at her mention, as an infant brightens at the flowing breast. Qays traveled to Muʿāwiyah and entered upon his son Yazīd, praised him, and complained of what was in him. He said: ‘If you wish, I will compel her husband to divorce her.’ He said: ‘No; rather, I would like to stay where she stays and know her news without my blood being declared forfeit.’ He granted him that and changed what had been written about shedding his blood with impunity. Disagreement about the end of Qays's affair They have differed about the end of Qays's affair. Some people related that Lubnā died, and Qays went out with a group of his people and stood at her grave, and said: Lubayna has died, and her death is my death. Will my grief over what is lost avail me? I will weep the weeping of a sorrowful one who has spent a life in passionate grief over one dead. Then he bent over the grave weeping until he fainted, and his family carried him to his dwelling while he was unconscious. He remained ill, not regaining consciousness and not answering anyone who spoke to him, for three days, then died and was buried beside her. Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-Bāqī related with his chain of transmission from Ayyūb b. ʿAbāyah, who said: Qays b. Dhurayḥ went out to Madinah to sell a camel of his. Lubnā's husband bought it, not knowing him, and said to him: ‘Come with me and I will give you the price.’ He went with him. When he opened the door, Lubnā confronted Qays, and when he saw her he turned and fled. The man went out after him with the price to give it to him. Qays said to him: ‘You shall never ride two mounts of mine.’ He said: ‘Are you Qays b. Dhurayḥ?’ He said: ‘Yes.’ He said to him: ‘This is Lubnā; you have seen her. Stay until I give her the choice; if she chooses you, I will divorce her.’ The Qurayshī thought that there was no place in her heart for him and that she would not do it. Qays said to him: ‘Do it.’ The Qurayshī entered upon her, and she chose Qays, so he divorced her. Qays stayed waiting for the end of the waiting period to marry her, but she died during the waiting period. Others related that Ibn Abī ʿAtīq came to al-Ḥasan and al-Ḥusayn ؓ, and Ibn Jaʿfar, and a group of Quraysh, and said: ‘I have a need from a man, and I fear he will reject me; I seek help through your standing.’ He went with them to Lubnā's husband. When he saw them, he was impressed that they had come to him. They said: ‘We have come for a need of Ibn Abī ʿAtīq.’ He said: ‘It is granted, whatever it is.’ Ibn AbīʿAtīq said: ‘Then grant me and them your wife Lubnā, and divorce her.’ He said: ‘I call you to witness that she is divorced three times.’ The people felt ashamed and said: ‘By Allah, we did not know that this was his need.’ Al-Ḥasan ؓ compensated him for that with one hundred thousand dirhams, and Ibn Abī ʿAtīq brought her to him. When the waiting period ended, the people asked her father, and he married her to him. She remained with him until they both died. Qays said, praising Ibn Abī ʿAtīq: May the Merciful reward, with the best reward for kindness, one better than a friend. I have tried all my brothers, and I have found none like Ibn Abī ʿAtīq. He strove to reunite my scattered affairs after a break, and in a matter in which I had deviated from the path. And he extinguished a burning that was in my heart, whose heat choked me with my own saliva.
