✧ (The consolidation of authority for Muṣʿab b. al-Zubayr in al-Kūfah) When Muṣʿab b. al-Zubayr became established in al-Kūfah, he sent to Ibrāhīm b. al-Ashtar to come to him, and ʿAbd al-Malik b. Marwān also sent to him to come to him. Ibn al-Ashtar was perplexed about his affair and consulted his companions as to which of the two he should go to. Then their opinion agreed upon going to their own city, al-Kūfah. So Ibn al-Ashtar came to Muṣʿab b. al-Zubayr, and he honored him, magnified him, and respected him greatly. Muṣʿab sent al-Muhallab b. Abī Ṣufrah over al-Mawṣil, al-Jazīrah, Adharbayjān, and Armīniyyah—and he had left as his deputy over al-Baṣrah when he departed from it ʿUbayd Allāh b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Maʿmar—and he himself remained in al-Kūfah. Mention of the dismissal of Muṣʿab b. al-Zubayr and the appointment of Ḥamzah b. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zubayr Then the year had not yet ended before his brother ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zubayr dismissed him from al-Baṣrah and appointed over it his son Ḥamzah b. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zubayr. He was brave, generous, but erratic, sometimes giving until he left nothing, and sometimes withholding what the like of it would not be withheld. His levity, recklessness in his intellect, and hastiness in his affair became apparent. It is said that one day he rode and saw the floodwaters of al-Baṣrah and said: "If they treat this pool gently, it will surely suffice them for their summer." Then later he saw it dried up and said: "I had said if they treated it gently it would suffice them." Other things of that sort appeared from him. Al-Aḥnaf wrote to his father asking him to dismiss him from them and restore Muṣʿab. So he dismissed him. He loaded up a great amount of wealth from the wealth of al-Baṣrah, and Mālik b. Mismaʿ confronted him and said: "We will not let you leave with our stipends." So ʿUbayd Allāh b. ʿAbd Allāh guaranteed the stipend to him, and he desisted. Ḥamzah departed with the wealth and came to al-Madīnah and deposited it with men, but they denied it, except for one man who fulfilled his trust. That reached his father, and he said: "May God distance him! I wanted to vie with the Banū Marwān through him, but he fell short." It is also said: Muṣʿab remained in al-Kūfah for a year after the killing of al-Mukhtār, having been dismissed from al-Baṣrah by his brother ʿAbd Allāh, who appointed over it his son Ḥamzah. Then Muṣʿab went as a delegate to his brother ʿAbd Allāh, and he returned him to al-Baṣrah. It is also said: Rather, Muṣʿab returned to al-Baṣrah after the killing of al-Mukhtār and appointed over al-Kūfah al-Ḥārith b. Abī Rabīʿah, so both were under his authority. Then his brother dismissed him from al-Baṣrah and appointed his son Ḥamzah. Then he dismissed Ḥamzah because of the letter of al-Aḥnaf and the people of al-Baṣrah, and restored Muṣʿab.
