وَلَمَّا سَمِعَ عَبْدُ الْمَلِكِ بْنُ مَرْوَانَ بِقَتْلِ سُلَيْمَانَ وَانْهِزَامِ أَصْحَابِهِ صَعِدَ الْمِنْبَرَ فَحَمِدَ اللَّهَ وَأَثْنَى عَلَيْهِ وَقَالَ: أَمَّا بَعْدُ فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ ( قَدْ أَهْلَكَ مِنْ رُءُوسِ أَهْلِ الْعِرَاقِ مُلْقِحَ فِتْنَةٍ وَرَأْسَ ضَلَالَةٍ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنَ صُرَدٍ، ✧ The Battle of ʿAyn al-Wardah And the people of Syria advanced with their armies until they were a day and a night's journey from ʿAyn al-Wardah. Then Sulaymān stood among his companions, reminded them of the Hereafter and made them desirous of it, then said: 'Now then, your enemy, to whom you have been traveling night and day, has come to you. When you meet them, fight them truthfully and be patient; surely Allah is with the patient. Let no man turn his back to them except as a stratagem of war or to join a company. Do not kill a retreating man, do not finish off a wounded man, and do not kill a captive from the people of your own call unless he fights you after you have taken him captive. For this was the conduct of ʿAlī regarding the people of this call.' He also said: 'If I am killed, the commander over you is al-Musayyab b. Najabah; if he is killed, then ʿAbd Allāh b. Saʿd b. Nufayl; if he is killed, then ʿAbd Allāh b. Wāl; if he is killed, then Rifāʿah b. Shaddād.' Then he sent ahead of him al-Musayyab b. Najabah with four hundred horsemen. They raided the army of Shuraḥbīl b. Dhī al-Kalāʿ while they were unaware, killing a group of them and wounding others, and drove off some cattle. The news reached ʿUbayd Allāh b. Ziyād, so he sent ahead of him al-Ḥuṣayn b. Numayr. He attacked Sulaymān b. Ṣurad and his army in the morning, and they stood facing each other on Wednesday, eight nights remaining of Jumādā al-Ūlā. Al-Ḥuṣayn b. Numayr stood with twelve thousand, and each of the two parties had prepared for the other. The Syrians called upon Sulaymān's companions to enter into obedience to Marwān b. al-Ḥakam, while Sulaymān's companions called upon the Syrians to hand over to them ʿUbayd Allāh b. Ziyād so that they might kill him in revenge for al-Ḥusayn. Each of the two parties refused to respond to what the other called for. They fought a fierce battle for most of their day until night. The advantage in it was for the Iraqis over the Syrians. When morning came, Ibn Dhī al-Kalāʿ arrived at the Syrians with eight thousand horsemen, having been rebuked and reviled by ʿUbayd Allāh b. Ziyād. The people fought on that day a battle the like of which old and beardless youths had never seen; nothing separated them except the times of the prayers until night. When the people woke on the third day, Adham b. Muḥriz arrived at the Syrians with ten thousand, and that was on Friday. They fought a fierce battle until the time when the forenoon sun rose high. Then the Syrians surrounded the Iraqis and enclosed them from every side. Sulaymān b. Ṣurad addressed the people, urging them to jihād. The people fought a very great battle. Then Sulaymān b. Ṣurad dismounted, broke the scabbard of his sword, and called out: 'O servants of Allah, whoever desires to go to Paradise, to repent of his sin, and to fulfill his covenant, let him come to me.' Many people dismounted with him and broke the scabbards of their swords. They charged until they were in the midst of the enemy, killing a great number of Syrians until they waded in blood. Sulaymān b. Ṣurad was killed; Yazīd b. al-Ḥuṣayn shot him with an arrow and he fell, then he rose, then he fell, then he rose, then he fell. Al-Musayyab b. Najabah took the banner and fought fiercely with it, saying: 'Mayyālah of the flowing locks, Bright of throat and chest, Knows that I, on the morning of terror and struggle, Am braver than a lion with a mane, springing upon its prey, A cutter of rivals, feared on every side.' Then he was killed, may Allah have mercy on him. He fulfilled his vow on that battlefield and joined his companions. ʿAbd Allāh b. Saʿd b. Nufayl took the banner and also fought fiercely, saying: 'May Allah have mercy on my two brothers; among them is he who has fulfilled his vow, and among them is he who waits, and they have not changed in the least.' At that moment Rabīʿah b. al-Mukhāriq launched a fierce attack upon the Iraqis, and he and ʿAbd Allāh b. Saʿd b. Nufayl engaged in single combat. Then they closed together, and Rabīʿah's nephew attacked ʿAbd Allāh b. Saʿd and killed him, then carried off his uncle. They called for ʿAbd Allāh b. Wāl, and there he was, warming himself at the fire of war with a band of men with him. Rifāʿah b. Shaddād charged and drove the Syrians away from him. He came and took the banner, fought for a long while, then said to his companions: 'Whoever desires the life after which there is no death, and the rest after which there is no toil, and the joy after which there is no sorrow, let him draw near to Allah by fighting these who have made lawful what is forbidden, and by going to Paradise.' That was at the time of the afternoon prayer. He and his companions charged, killing several men and driving them back. Then the Syrians turned upon them from every side until they drove them back to the place where they had been. Their position could only be approached from one direction. When evening came, Adham b. Muḥriz al-Bāhilī took over the fighting against them. He charged them with his cavalry and infantry. Ibn Muḥriz reached Ibn Wāl while he was reciting: 'And do not think those who have been killed in the way of Allah are dead…' to the end of the verse. That enraged Adham b. Muḥriz, so he charged him, struck his hand and severed it, then withdrew from him and said: 'I think you wish you were with your family.' Ibn Wāl said: 'Evil is what you think. By Allah, I would not wish that your hand were in its place except that I might have a reward like what is in my hand, so that your burden of sin may be great and my reward may be great.' That also enraged him, so he charged him and thrust him with a spear, killing him while he was coming forward without turning aside. Ibn Wāl was one of the devout jurists. When he was killed, they came to Rifāʿah b. Shaddād al-Bajalī and said: 'Take the banner.' He said: 'Let us withdraw, perhaps Allah will gather us for the day of their evil.' ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAwf b. al-Aḥmar said to him: 'By Allah, we are destroyed. If you turn back, they will ride upon our shoulders, and we will not travel a parasang before we perish to the last man. And if any of us escapes, the Arabs will seize him to draw near to them, and he will be killed in captivity. This sun is near setting; let us fight them on our horses. When night grows dark, we will mount our horses at the beginning of the night and travel until morning, then proceed at a leisurely pace. Each man will carry his companion and his wounded, and we will know the direction we are taking.' Rifāʿah said: 'Excellent is what you have advised!' He took the banner and fought them fiercely. The Syrians tried to destroy them before nightfall but could not achieve that because of the intensity of their fighting. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUzayz al-Kinānī advanced and fought the Syrians, with his son Muḥammad with him, who was a small boy. He called out to the Banū Kinānah among the Syrians and handed over his son to them so that they might deliver him to al-Kūfah. They offered him safe-conduct, but he refused, then fought them until he was killed. Karib b. Yazīd al-Ḥimyarī advanced at evening with a hundred of his companions and fought them the fiercest of fights. Ibn Dhī al-Kalāʿ al-Ḥimyarī offered him and his companions safe-conduct. He said: 'We were safe in this world, and we only came out seeking the safety of the Hereafter.' They fought them until they were killed. Ṣakhr b. Hilāl al-Muzanī advanced with thirty men of Muzaynah, and they fought until they were killed. When evening came, the Syrians returned to their camp. Rifāʿah looked at every man whose horse had been disabled and who was wounded, and handed him over to his people. Then he traveled with the people during that night. The return of the Iraqis to their lands When the Syrians woke in the morning, the Iraqis had turned back and were returning to their lands. They did not send anyone in pursuit. Rifāʿah and those with him crossed the Khābūr and passed by Qarqīsiyā. Zufar b. al-Ḥārith sent them food, fodder, and physicians. They stayed three days until they had rested, then departed. When they reached Hīt, there was Saʿd b. Ḥudhayfah b. al-Yamān coming with those with him from the people of al-Madāʾin, intending to help them. When they told him what had happened to them and what had befallen them, and informed him of the death of their companions, they invoked mercy upon them, asked forgiveness for them, and wept over their brethren. The people of al-Madāʾin turned back to their city, and the returning party of the people of al-Kūfah went back to it. A great and numerous host of them had been killed. Al-Mukhtār b. Abī ʿUbayd was still in prison, not having come out yet. He wrote to Rifāʿah b. Shaddād, consoling him for those of them who had been killed, invoking mercy upon them, and congratulating them for the martyrdom they had attained and the abundant reward. He said: 'Welcome to those whose rewards Allah has made great and with whom He is pleased. By Allah, none of them took a single step but that Allah's reward for him in it was greater than this world and all it contains. Sulaymān has fulfilled what was upon him; Allah took him and placed his soul among the souls of the prophets, martyrs, and righteous ones. And now I am the trusted commander, the slayer of tyrants and corrupters, if Allah wills. So prepare, be ready, and rejoice. I call you to the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Messenger, and to seeking vengeance for the blood of the People of the House.' He mentioned many words to this effect. Before their arrival, he had already informed the people of their destruction through his familiar spirit that used to come to him from the devils. Indeed, a devil used to come to him and inspire him with something close to what the devil of Musaylimah used to inspire him. The army of Sulaymān b. Ṣurad and his companions was called the Army of the Penitents. When ʿAbd al-Malik b. Marwān heard of the killing of Sulaymān and the defeat of his companions, he ascended the pulpit, praised and extolled Allah, and said: 'Now then, Allah has destroyed among the heads of the people of Iraq a sower of discord and a leader of error, Sulaymān b. Ṣurad. Behold, the swords have left the head of al-Musayyab in pieces. Allah has killed' among them two great heads, astray and leading astray: ʿAbd Allāh b. Saʿd al-Azdī and ʿAbd Allāh b. Wāl al-Bakrī. After them, none remains who can offer resistance.' There is some doubt in this, for his father was alive. Aʿshā Hamdān said regarding that, in verses that were kept secret at that time: 'A phantom from you, O Umm Ghālib, came to me, So be greeted from us, from a lover who stays apart. I have not ceased to be in grief, and I have not ceased to be struck By a care that came to me from your separation, exhausting. I will not forget—no, I will not forget—your turning at forenoon To us with the fair, tender maidens. She appeared to us, slender-waisted, flat-bellied, Delicate of flank, full of haunches, A virgin, fair, youthful, Like the sun of forenoon shining through the clouds. When the clouds covered her, and around her appeared A brow of hers, and she withheld her brow, That is the passion, and it is my longing and my desire, So how beloved is she, a friend who has not been estranged. May Allah not distance youth and its remembrance, And the love of pure friendship with maidens of full breasts. And what I loved of our reproach only increases In playfulness and in the watering of the close companion. Even if I do not forget them, I will surely remember The calamity of a man of hidden virtue, noble of rank. He sought nearness to Allah through piety, sincerely, And piety toward Allah is the best gain of any earner. He turned away from this world and was not entangled in it, And repented to Allah, the Exalted in ranks. He renounced this world and said: I have cast it away, So I will not return to it as long as I live. I am not one who desires what people hate to lose, And for which seekers strive in it, desirous. He directed his face toward al-Thawiyyah, traveling To Ibn Ziyād amid the assembled battalions, With a people who are the people of piety and intelligence, Brave heroes, noble chiefs of pure lineage. They went, leaving the opinion of Ibn Ṭalḥah for the sake of Allah, And they did not answer the addressing commander. They traveled, among them one seeking piety, And another repenting of what he had committed yesterday. They met at ʿAyn al-Wardah the army, decisive Against them, and they struck them with white, cutting swords, Yemeni blades that severed the hands, and at times With noble, well-bred, swift horses. Then came to them a host from Syria, after that, Hosts like the waves of the sea from every side. They did not cease until their chiefs were annihilated, And none of them escaped there except small bands. The people of steadfastness were left lying slain, and they became Such that the east wind and the south winds passed over them by turns. The Khuzāʿī chief was laid low, As if he had never fought or battled. The head of the Banū Shamkh and the horseman of his people Shanūʾah, and the Taymī, the leader of the battalions, And ʿAmr b. Bishr, al-Walīd, Khālid, Zayd b. Bakr, and al-Ḥulays b. Ghālib, And a striker from Hamdān of every brave warrior, When he charged, the noble of gains did not flinch. From every people, their chief was struck down, And a man of noble lineage at the summit of glory, eminent. They refused anything but blows whose impact cleaves the skull, And thrusting with the tips of spears, unerring. Indeed, Saʿīd on the day when he destroyed ʿĀmir Was braver than a lion at a mountain pass, springing. So O best army in Iraq and its people, You have watered the cisterns of every dark, pouring cloud. May our horsemen and our defenders not perish, When the white swords are bared from the anklets of the maidens. They were not killed until they had stirred up a band Of those who made lawful what is forbidden, a light like the blazing suns.'
