Translation

✧ Marwān's conquest of Egypt When al-Ḍaḥḥāk and his companions were killed and Syria was secured for Marwān, he marched to Egypt and arrived there. Over it was ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Jaḥdam al-Qurashī, who was calling for Ibn al-Zubayr. He went out against Marwān with those with him, and Marwān sent ʿAmr b. Saʿīd behind him until he entered Egypt. Ibn Jaḥdam was told of that, so he returned, and the people pledged allegiance to Marwān, and he returned to Damascus. When he drew near to it, he learned that Ibn al-Zubayr had sent his brother Muṣʿab against him with an army. Marwān sent ʿAmr b. Saʿīd against him before he entered Syria, and he killed him, and Muṣʿab and his companions fled; Muṣʿab was brave. Then Marwān returned to Damascus and settled there. Al-Ḥuṣayn b. Numayr and Mālik b. Hubayra had stipulated conditions to Marwān for themselves and for Khālid b. Yazīd. When his kingship was established, he said one day while Mālik was with him: "Some people claim conditions; among them is a perfumed, kohl-wearing man," meaning Mālik, for he used to perfume himself and apply kohl. Mālik said: "This, before you reach Tihāmah and the girth reaches the two teats." Marwān said: "Gently, O Abū Sulaymān, we were only jesting with you!" He said: "It is that."
