Translation

✧ Mention of the death of Yazīd b. Muʿāwiyah. The people received the news of the death of Yazīd b. Muʿāwiyah, and that he had died on the fourteenth night of Rabīʿ al-Awwal in the year sixty-four, at the age of thirty-five, thirty-eight, or thirty-nine years. His tenure was three years and six or eight months. At that point, the war subsided and the fire of strife was extinguished. It is said that they continued to besiege Ibn al-Zubayr for forty nights after the death of Yazīd. It is mentioned that Ibn al-Zubayr learned of Yazīd's death before the people of Syria did, and he called out to them: "O people of Syria, God has destroyed your tyrant. Whoever among you wishes to enter into what the people have entered, let him do so; and whoever wishes to return to his Syria, let him return." The Syrians did not believe the people of Makkah in what they told them, until Thābit b. Qays b. al-Munaqqaʿ came with the certain news. It is mentioned that Ḥuṣayn b. Numayr was invited by Ibn al-Zubayr to speak with him between the two ranks. They met until the heads of their two horses touched, and Ḥuṣayn's horse began to shy away and he restrained it. Ibn al-Zubayr said to him: "What is with you?" He said: "There are pigeons under the hooves of my horse, eating from the dung, and I dislike to trample the pigeons of the sanctuary." He said to him: "You do this while you are killing Muslims?!" Ḥuṣayn said to him: "Then permit us to circumambulate the Kaʿbah, then we will return to our lands." So he permitted them, and they circumambulated. Ibn Jarīr mentioned that Ḥuṣayn and Ibn al-Zubayr agreed one night to meet, and they met outside Makkah. Ḥuṣayn said to him: "If this man has indeed perished, then you are the most entitled of the people to this matter after him. Come, travel with me to Syria, for by God, not two will disagree about you." It is said that Ibn al-Zubayr did not trust him in that, and he spoke harshly to him in speech. Ibn Numayr became averse to him and said: "I invite him to the caliphate, and he speaks harshly to me?!" Then he turned back with the army, returning to Syria, and said: "I promise him kingship, and he threatens me with death?!" Then Ibn al-Zubayr regretted the harshness he had shown to him, and sent to him saying: "As for Syria, I am not coming to it, but take the oath of allegiance for me from those there, for I will grant you security and act justly among you." He sent back to him saying: "Those from this house who seek it in Syria are many." So he returned and passed by Madinah, where its people coveted him, and they humiliated them severely. ʿAlī b. al-Ḥusayn honored them and gave Ḥuṣayn b. Numayr fodder and provender as a gift. The Banū Umayyah departed with the army to Syria, and they returned to it, after Muʿāwiyah b. Yazīd b. Muʿāwiyah had been made successor in Damascus by a testament from his father to that effect. And God, glorified be He, knows best what is correct.
