✧ The March of the People of Syria to Makkah to Fight ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zubayr and Those Who Shared His View in Refusing to Submit to Yazīd b. Muʿāwiyah. In the year 64 AH At the beginning of al-Muḥarram of that year, after finishing the war against the people of al-Madīnah, Muslim b. ʿUqbah marched to Makkah intending to fight Ibn al-Zubayr and those Bedouins who gathered around him in opposing Yazīd b. Muʿāwiyah. He appointed Rawḥ b. Zinbāʿ as his deputy over it. When he reached Thaniyyat Harshā, he sent for the commanders of the army and gathered them, and said: "The Commander of the Faithful has enjoined me that if death befalls me, I should appoint Ḥuṣayn b. Numayr al-Sakūnī as my successor over you. By God, if the matter were mine to decide, I would not do that." Then he summoned him and said: "Look, O son of a donkey's packsaddle, and keep what I enjoin upon you." Then he commanded him that when he reached Makkah, he should engage Ibn al-Zubayr in battle within three days. Then he said: "O God, I have never done any deed after the testimony that there is no god but God and that Muḥammad is His servant and Messenger that is dearer to me than my killing the people of al-Madīnah, nor any deed in which I have greater hope in the Hereafter. If I enter the Fire after that, I am indeed wretched." Then he died, may God disfigure him, and was buried at al-Mushallal, according to what al-Wāqidī said. Ḥuṣayn b. Numayr marched with the army toward Makkah, and reached it when four days remained of al-Muḥarram, according to what al-Wāqidī said. It is also said: when seven days had passed of it. Groups of the remaining nobles of the people of al-Madīnah had joined Ibn al-Zubayr, and Najdah b. ʿĀmir al-Ḥanafī from the people of al-Yamāmah with a group of its people also joined him, to defend the House against the people of Syria. Ḥuṣayn b. Numayr camped outside Makkah, and Ibn al-Zubayr went out to him with the people of Makkah and those gathered with him. They fought that day a severe battle, and al-Mundhir b. al-Zubayr and a man from the people of Syria dueled, and each of them killed his opponent. The people of Syria launched a true charge, and the people of Makkah were routed. The mule of ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zubayr stumbled with him, and al-Miswar b. Makhramah, Muṣʿab b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAwf, and a group turned back to him, and they fought in his defense until they were all killed. Ibn al-Zubayr held firm against them until nightfall, and they withdrew from him. Then they fought for the rest of al-Muḥarram and the whole of Ṣafar. When it was Saturday, the third of Rabīʿ al-Awwal in the year 64, they set up mangonels against the Kaʿbah and hurled stones at it until it caught fire, and the wall of the House burned on Saturday—thus said al-Wāqidī—while they were saying: A swaying one like the foaming stallion-camel; we hurl with it at the timbers of this mosque. And ʿAmr b. Ḥawṭah al-Sadūsī began to say: How do you see the work of Umm Farwah? It seizes them between al-Ṣafā and al-Marwah. Umm Farwah was the name of the mangonel. It is also said that it burned because the people of the mosque kept lighting fires while they were around the Kaʿbah, and the fire caught onto some of the curtains of the Kaʿbah, then spread to its timbers and roofs, and it burned. It is also said that it burned because Ibn al-Zubayr heard the takbīr on one of the mountains of Makkah on a dark night, and he thought they were the people of Syria. A fire was raised on a spear so they could see who these people on the mountain were, and the wind carried a spark from the tip of the spear to the area between the Yamani corner and the Black Stone of the Kaʿbah, and it caught onto its curtains and timbers, and it burned, and the corner turned black and cracked in three places. A woman of Quraysh died, and all the people went out with her funeral procession, fearing that punishment would descend upon them. Ibn al-Zubayr spent the morning prostrating, supplicating and saying: "O God, I did not intend what happened, so do not destroy Your servants for my sin, and here is my forelock before You." The people of Syria continued to besiege Ibn al-Zubayr until the news of the death of Yazīd b. Muʿāwiyah reached them at the new moon of Rabīʿ al-Ākhir.
