Translation

✧ Those of the notables who died in this year In this year a throng of the renowned and eminent from among the Companions and others died in the Battle of al-Ḥarrah, whose enumeration would be lengthy. Among their notable ones from the Companions: Rabīʿah b. Kaʿb al-Aslamī. Rabīʿah b. Kaʿb al-Aslamī: He embraced Islam early and was one of the People of the Ṣuffah. He used to serve the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, spend the night at his door for his needs, and go on campaigns with him. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ died, he departed and settled at [Yaynah—and it is among the lands of Aslam, and it is] one postal stage from Madinah. He remained until the days of al-Ḥarrah. From Rabīʿah b. Kaʿb, who said: I used to serve the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and attend to his needs throughout my entire day until the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed the last ʿIshāʾ prayer. Then I would sit at his door when he entered his house, saying: Perhaps a need may arise for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. I would keep hearing him say: "Glory be to Allah, glory be to Allah, [glory be to Allah] and with His praise," until I grew weary and turned back, or sleep overcame my eyes and I dozed off. [He said]: One day he said to me, seeing my lightness [for him] and my service to him: "O Rabīʿah, ask of me and I will give you." He said: I said: "Let me consider my affair, O Messenger of Allah, then I will inform you of it." He said: I reflected within myself and realized that this world is cut off and fleeting, and that in it I have a provision that will suffice me and come to me. He said: I said: I will ask the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for my Hereafter, for he is with Allah, Mighty and Majestic, in the station that he is in. He said: I came to him, and he said: "What have you done, O Rabīʿah?" He said: I said: "Yes, O Messenger of Allah, I ask you to intercede for me with your Lord so that He frees me from the Fire." He said: "Who commanded you to this, O Rabīʿah?" He said: I said: "No, by the One who sent you with the truth, no one commanded me to it. But when you said, 'Ask of me and I will give you,' and you are with Allah in the station that you are in, I considered my affair and realized that this world is cut off and fleeting, and that in it I have a provision that will come to me. So I said: I ask the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for my Hereafter." He said: Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ remained silent for a long while, then said to me: "I will do that, so help me against your own self with abundant prostration." ʿAbd Allāh b. Ḥanẓalah al-Ghasīl b. Abī ʿĀmir al-Rāhib. ʿAbd Allāh b. Ḥanẓalah al-Ghasīl b. Abī ʿĀmir al-Rāhib: When Ḥanẓalah intended to go out to Uḥud, he had intercourse with his wife Jamīlah, and she conceived ʿAbd Allāh in Shawwāl at the beginning of thirty-two months after the Hijrah. Ḥanẓalah was killed that day as a martyr, and the angels washed him; so his children were called Banū Ghasīl al-Malāʾikah. Jamīlah gave birth to ʿAbd Allāh, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ died when ʿAbd Allāh was seven years old. When the people of Madinah rose during the nights of al-Ḥarrah and expelled the Banū Umayyah from Madinah, and exposed the faults of Yazīd, they agreed upon ʿAbd Allāh and entrusted their affair to him. He swore allegiance to them upon death and said: "O people, fear Allah alone. By Allah, we did not rise against Yazīd until we feared we would be pelted with stones from the sky. A man who has intercourse with mothers, daughters, and sisters, who drinks wine and abandons prayer—by Allah, even if no one were with me, I would strive for Allah against him with a good striving." That day the people leapt up from all sides to pledge allegiance. During those nights ʿAbd Allāh b. Ḥanẓalah had no sleeping place except the mosque. When they entered Madinah, he fought until he was killed that day. Abū ʿĀʾishah al-Hamdānī. Abū ʿĀʾishah al-Hamdānī, and his name is Masrūq b. al-Ajdaʿ b. Mālik: He was stolen while young, then he was found, so he was named Masrūq. He saw Abū Bakr, ʿUmar, ʿUthmān, ʿAlī, and Ibn Masʿūd. He was present with ʿAlī at the war against the Khawārij at al-Nahrawān. ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb said: "What is your name?" He said: "Masrūq b. al-Ajdaʿ." He said: "Masrūq b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān." And ʿAmr b. Maʿdīkarib was the maternal uncle of Masrūq. Ibn al-Madīnī said: No one among the companions of ʿAbd Allāh took precedence over Masrūq. From Abū Isḥāq, who said: Masrūq performed the Hajj and did not sleep except prostrating on his face until he returned. From Anas b. Sīrīn, that the wife of Masrūq said: He would pray until his feet swelled. Sometimes I would sit behind him weeping at what I saw him doing to himself. Masrūq ؓ died at al-Kūfah in this year, which is the year sixty-three, at the age of sixty-three.
