Translation

✧ As for the grave of al-Ḥusayn ؓ, it has become well-known among most later scholars that it is in the mashhad of ʿAlī at a place in al-Ṭaff near the river Karbalāʾ. It is said that this mashhad is built over his grave, but Allah knows best. Ibn Jarīr and others have mentioned that the site of his killing had its traces effaced, such that no one could identify it with certainty through any report. Abū Nuʿaym al-Faḍl b. Dukayn used to censure anyone who claimed to know the grave of al-Ḥusayn ؓ. Hishām b. al-Kalbī mentioned that when water was made to flow over the grave of al-Ḥusayn to erase its trace, the water dried up after forty days. Then a Bedouin from Banū Asad came and began taking handful after handful and smelling them until he came upon the grave of al-Ḥusayn. He wept and said: "May my father and mother be your ransom! How fragrant you were and how fragrant your soil!" Then he began reciting: They wished to hide his grave from his enemy, but the fragrance of the grave's soil pointed to the grave.
