Translation

✧ Those who killed him interpreted it that he came to divide the word of the Muslims after it had been united, and to depose the one to whom the people had pledged allegiance and upon whom they had agreed. In Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim there is a ḥadīth prohibiting that, warning against it, and threatening it. And assuming that a group of ignorant people interpreted it against him and killed him, it was not for them to kill him. Rather, it was obligatory upon them to answer him to what he asked of those three aforementioned qualities. If a faction of tyrants is blamed, the entire ummah is not blamed, and it is not accused against its Prophet ﷺ. The matter is not as they went to, nor as they followed. Rather, most of the ummah, in the past and recently, detested what occurred of his killing and the killing of his companions, except a small rabble from the people of al-Kūfah—may God disfigure them. Most of them had written to him so as to attain through him their corrupt aims and objectives. When Ibn Ziyād learned that from them, he conveyed to them what they wanted of the world, and took them upon that, and incited them to it by desire and fear. So they withdrew from al-Ḥusayn and abandoned him, then killed him. Not all of that army was pleased with what occurred of his killing. Rather, even Yazīd b. Muʿāwiyah was not pleased with that—and God knows best—nor did he hate it. What is almost predominant in assumption is that if Yazīd had been able to get him before he was killed, he would have pardoned him, as his father had enjoined that upon him, and as he himself stated, informing about himself of that. He cursed Ibn Ziyād for that action of his and reviled him in what appears and is evident, but he did not dismiss him for that, nor punish him, nor send to censure him for it. And God knows best.
