The year sixty-one began while al-Ḥusayn b. ʿAlī was traveling toward al-Kūfah in the region between Makkah and Iraq, accompanied by his companions and relatives. This is an account of his killing, ؓ, taken from the words of the authorities in this matter, not as the Shīʿah claim with their blatant lies and slanders. Abū Mikhnaf said, with his chain of transmission, on the authority of ʿAbd Allāh b. Sulaym and al-Madhrī b. al-Mushmaʿill, both of the Asad tribe: Al-Ḥusayn approached, and when he halted at Sharāf, he said to his servants at dawn: "Draw water." They drew an ample supply. Then they traveled until mid-morning. Al-Ḥusayn heard a man saying "Allāhu akbar," so he asked him: "Why did you say Allāhu akbar?" He replied: "I saw palm trees." The two Asadīs said to him: "In this place no one has ever seen a single palm tree." Al-Ḥusayn said: "What then do you two think he saw?" They said: "This is the cavalry; it has come." Al-Ḥusayn said: "Is there not a refuge for us that we can put behind our backs and face the people from one direction?" They said: "Yes, Dhū Ḥusum." So he turned left toward Dhū Ḥusum and halted. He ordered his tents to be pitched, and they were set up. The people came, a thousand horsemen under al-Ḥurr b. Yazīd al-Tamīmī. They were the vanguard of the army that Ibn Ziyād had sent. They stood facing him at the height of noon. Al-Ḥusayn and his companions wore turbans and had girded on their swords. Al-Ḥusayn ordered his companions to drink their fill of water and to water their horses, and also to water the horses of their enemies. He and others narrated: When noon arrived, al-Ḥusayn ordered al-Ḥajjāj b. Masrūq al-Juʿfī to give the call to prayer, and he did. Then al-Ḥusayn came out wearing a waist wrapper, a cloak, and sandals. He addressed the people, both his companions and his enemies. He praised and extolled God, then said: "O people, this is an excuse to God and to you. I did not come to you until your letters and messengers came to me, saying: 'Come to us, for we have no imam. Perhaps God will unite us through you upon guidance.' So I have come to you. If you grant me what I can rely upon from your covenants, I will enter your city. But if you do not, or if you dislike my coming, I will turn away from you back to the place from which I came." They remained silent. Then the prayer was called. Al-Ḥusayn said to al-Ḥurr: "Do you want to lead your companions in prayer?" He said: "No, but you pray and we will pray behind you." So al-Ḥusayn led them in prayer. Then he entered his tent, and his companions gathered around him. Al-Ḥurr withdrew to his troops, and each side remained on alert. When the time for the afternoon prayer came, al-Ḥusayn led them in prayer. Then he withdrew and addressed them, urging them to hear and obey him and to cast off the false claimants who ruled the subjects with oppression. Al-Ḥurr said to him: "We do not know what these letters are or who wrote them." Al-Ḥusayn brought out two saddlebags full of letters and scattered them before him. He read a portion of them. Al-Ḥurr said: "We are not among those who wrote to you. We have been ordered, when we meet you, not to part from you until we bring you before ʿUbayd Allāh b. Ziyād." Al-Ḥusayn said: "Death is closer to you than that." Then al-Ḥusayn said to his companions: "Mount." They mounted, and the women mounted. When he wanted to depart, the people blocked him from leaving. Al-Ḥusayn said to al-Ḥurr: "May your mother be bereaved of you! What do you want?" Al-Ḥurr replied: "By God, if anyone other than you among the Arabs said that to me while he was in the same situation as you, I would retaliate against him, and I would not refrain from mentioning his mother. But there is no way to mention your mother except in the best manner we can." The people exchanged words and argued. Al-Ḥurr said to him: "I was not commanded to fight you. I was only commanded not to part from you until I bring you to al-Kūfah before Ibn Ziyād. If you refuse, then take a road that will not bring you to al-Kūfah or return you to al-Madīnah. I will write to Ibn Ziyād, and you may write to Yazīd or to Ibn Ziyād if you wish. Perhaps God will bring about something that grants me safety from being afflicted with anything concerning your affair." He said: So al-Ḥusayn took a road to the left, away from the road of al-ʿUdhayb and al-Qādisiyyah. Al-Ḥurr b. Yazīd rode alongside him, saying: "O Ḥusayn, I remind you of God regarding yourself. I bear witness that if you fight, you will surely be killed, and if you are fought against, you will surely perish, as I see it." Al-Ḥusayn said to him: "Do you frighten me with death? But I will say as the brother of the Aws said to his cousin when he met him while he was going to support the Messenger of God ﷺ, and the cousin said: 'Where are you going? You will be killed.' He replied:" "I will go on; death is no disgrace for a young man / when he intends the truth and strives as a Muslim, and consoles the righteous men with his own soul, / and parts from fear of living in humiliation and abasement." It is also narrated in another version: "I will go on; death is no disgrace for a man / when he intends the truth and is not found a sinner. If I die, I will not regret; if I live, I will not be blamed. / Enough for you as death is to be humiliated and abased." When al-Ḥurr heard this from him, he withdrew from him and began to ride with his companions at a distance from him. They reached ʿUdhayb al-Hijānāt, where the camels of al-Nuʿmān were grazing. There were four travelers—that is, four men—who had come from al-Kūfah on their mounts, riding swiftly and leading a horse belonging to Nāfiʿ b. Hilāl, called al-Kāmil. They were heading toward al-Ḥusayn, with their guide being a man called al-Ṭirimmāḥ b. ʿAdī, mounted on a horse and reciting: "O my she-camel, do not be startled by my urging, / and hasten before the dawn rises, with the best of riders and the best of travelers, / until you halt at the noble of origin, the glorious, free, wide of chest. / God brought him for the best of affairs, then may He preserve him for the duration of time." Al-Ḥurr wanted to come between them and al-Ḥusayn, but al-Ḥusayn prevented him. When they reached him, he said to them: "Tell me about the people behind you." Mujammiʿ b. ʿAbd Allāh al-ʿĀʾidhī, one of the four, said to him: "As for the nobles of the people, they are united against you, because their bribes have grown great and their saddlebags have been filled. By that their affection is won and their counsel is solicited. As for the rest of the people, their hearts incline toward you, but tomorrow their swords will be unsheathed against you." He said to them: "Do you have news of my messenger?" They said: "Who is your messenger?" He said: "Qays b. Mushir al-Ṣaydāwī." They said: "Yes. Al-Ḥuṣayn b. Numayr seized him and sent him to Ibn Ziyād. Ibn Ziyād ordered him to curse you and curse your father. Instead, he invoked blessings upon you and your father, cursed Ibn Ziyād and his father, called the people to support you, and informed them of your coming. So Ibn Ziyād ordered him to be thrown from the top of the palace, and he died." Al-Ḥusayn's eyes filled with tears, and he recited the words of the Most High: "Among them are those who have fulfilled their vow, and among them are those who wait, and they have not changed in the least" [al-Aḥzāb: 23]. "O God, make their dwellings Paradise, and gather us with them in a resting place of Your mercy and the desired treasures of Your reward." Then al-Ṭirimmāḥ b. ʿAdī said to al-Ḥusayn: "I look, and I see with you no one except this small group. I see that these people who are accompanying you are a match for those with you. How then, when the outskirts of al-Kūfah are full of horses and armies arrayed to come against you? I implore you by God, if you can avoid advancing even a span toward them, do so. If you wish to alight in a land where God will protect you until you see your situation, then come with me, and I will bring you down to the stronghold of our mountain, which is Ajaʾ. God protected us there from the kings of Ghassān and Ḥimyar, from al-Nuʿmān b. al-Mundhir, and from the black and the red. By God, no humiliation has ever entered upon us. I will go with you until I bring you down to al-Qurayyah. Then we will send to the men of Ajaʾ and Salmā from Ṭayyiʾ. Then stay among us as long as you wish. I guarantee ten thousand Ṭayyiʾs who will strike with their swords before you. By God, no one will ever reach you as long as one eye among them blinks." Al-Ḥusayn said to him: "May God reward you well." But he did not turn back from his purpose. Al-Ṭirimmāḥ bade him farewell and departed. Al-Ḥusayn went on. When night came, he ordered his young men to draw enough water. Then he traveled by night. He dozed during the journey until his head nodded. He woke up saying: "We belong to God and to Him we return. Praise be to God, Lord of the worlds." Then he said: "I saw a horseman on a horse saying: 'The people are traveling, and the fates are traveling toward them.' I knew that it was our own souls being announced to us." When dawn broke, he prayed with his companions and hastened to mount. Ibn Ziyād's letter to al-Ḥurr b. Yazīd Then he veered to the left in his journey until he reached Nīnawā. There was a rider carrying a bow on his shoulder who had come from al-Kūfah. He greeted al-Ḥurr b. Yazīd but did not greet al-Ḥusayn. He handed al-Ḥurr a letter from Ibn Ziyād. Its content was that he should divert al-Ḥusayn in his travel into Iraq away from any village or fortress, until his messengers and troops came to him. That was on Thursday, the second of Muḥarram, in the year sixty-one. The next day, ʿUmar b. Saʿd b. Abī Waqqāṣ arrived with four thousand men. Ibn Ziyād had prepared him with these men for the Daylam campaign, and he had encamped outside al-Kūfah. When the matter of al-Ḥusayn came up, Ibn Ziyād said to him: "March against him. When you are done with him, proceed to Daylam." ʿUmar b. Saʿd asked to be excused from that. Ibn Ziyād said to him: "If you wish, I will excuse you and remove you from the governorship of these lands over which I have appointed you." He said: "Let me consider my affair." He consulted everyone, and all advised him not to march against al-Ḥusayn. Even his sister's son, Ḥamzah b. al-Mughīrah b. Shuʿbah, said to him: "Beware of marching against al-Ḥusayn, lest you disobey your Lord and sever your kinship. By God, it would be better for you to lose the sovereignty over the whole earth than to meet God with the blood of al-Ḥusayn." He said: "I will do so, if God Almighty wills." Then ʿUbayd Allāh b. Ziyād threatened and warned him with dismissal and death. So he marched against al-Ḥusayn and encamped opposite him at the place we mentioned. Then he sent messengers to al-Ḥusayn: "What has brought you here?" He said: "The people of al-Kūfah wrote to me to come to them. Since they now dislike me, I will return to Makkah and leave you." When this reached ʿUmar b. Saʿd, he said: "I hope that God will spare me from fighting him." He wrote to Ibn Ziyād about that. Ibn Ziyād wrote back: "Come between them and the water, as was done with the pious, pure, wronged one, the Commander of the Faithful ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān. And propose to al-Ḥusayn that he and those with him pledge allegiance to the Commander of the Faithful Yazīd b. Muʿāwiyah. If they do so, then we will consider our decision." Withholding water from al-Ḥusayn and his companions ʿUmar b. Saʿd's men began to prevent al-Ḥusayn's companions from reaching the water. One of their detachments was under ʿAmr b. al-Ḥajjāj. Al-Ḥusayn prayed against him for thirst, and that man died of severe thirst. Then al-Ḥusayn asked ʿUmar b. Saʿd to meet him between the two armies. Each of them came with about twenty horsemen. They spoke for a long time until a portion of the night had passed. No one knew what they said, but some people thought that al-Ḥusayn asked ʿUmar to go with him to Yazīd b. Muʿāwiyah and leave the two armies facing each other. ʿUmar said: "Then Ibn Ziyād would demolish my house." Al-Ḥusayn said: "I will build it for you." He said: "Then he would seize my estates." Al-Ḥusayn said: "I will give you better than them from my property in the Ḥijāz." But ʿUmar b. Saʿd disliked that. Some said: Rather, he asked of him either that they both go to Yazīd, or that he let him return to the Ḥijāz, or that he go to one of the frontier posts and fight the Turks. Al-Ḥusayn given the choice between fighting or submitting to the judgment of ʿUbayd Allāh b. Ziyād ʿUmar wrote to ʿUbayd Allāh about that, and he said: "Yes, I have accepted." Then Shimr b. Dhī al-Jawshan stood up and said: "No, by God, not until he and his companions submit to your judgment." Then he said: "By God, I have heard that Ḥusayn and ʿUmar b. Saʿd sit between the two armies and converse for most of the night." Ibn Ziyād said to him: "What an excellent opinion you have!" Abū Mikhnaf narrated with his chain of transmission on the authority of ʿUqbah b. Samʿān, who said: "I accompanied al-Ḥusayn from Makkah until he was killed. By God, there was not a word he said in any situation that I did not hear. He did not ask to go to Yazīd and place his hand in his hand, nor to go to any frontier post. He asked them for one of two things: either to return from where he came, or to let him go into the wide land until he saw what the people's affair would come to." Then ʿUbayd Allāh b. Ziyād sent Shimr b. Dhī al-Jawshan and said: "Go. If Ḥusayn and his companions come under my judgment, fine. Otherwise, order ʿUmar b. Saʿd to fight them. If he delays, strike his neck, and you will be the commander over the people." He wrote to ʿUmar b. Saʿd, threatening him for his slackness in fighting al-Ḥusayn, and ordering him, if al-Ḥusayn did not come to him, to fight him and those with him, for they were dissenters. ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī al-Muḥill sought safe conduct for the sons of his paternal aunt Umm al-Banīn bt. Ḥizām from ʿAlī; they were al-ʿAbbās, ʿAbd Allāh, Jaʿfar, and ʿUthmān. Ibn Ziyād wrote them a writ of amnesty, and ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī al-Muḥill sent it with a mawlā of his called Kuzmān. When that reached them they said, "As for the amnesty of Ibn Sumayya, we do not want it. We hope for an amnesty better than the amnesty of Ibn Sumayya." When Shamir b. Dhī al-Jawshan came to ʿUmar b. Saʿd with the letter of ʿUbayd Allāh b. Ziyād, ʿUmar said to him, "May God make your abode distant and make ugly what you have brought. By God, I think you are the one who turned him away from the three matters I offered him that al-Ḥusayn requested." Shamir said to him, "Tell me what you are going to do. Will you fight them, or will you leave them to me?" ʿUmar replied, "No, and no honor to you. I will take charge of that." He placed him over the infantry, and they advanced against them on the evening of Thursday, the ninth of al-Muḥarram. Shamir b. Dhī al-Jawshan stood and said, "Where are the sons of our sister?" Al-ʿAbbās, ʿAbd Allāh, Jaʿfar, and ʿUthmān, the sons of ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib, stood up to him. He said, "You are granted amnesty." They said, "If you grant us amnesty along with the son of the Messenger of God ﷺ; otherwise we have no need of your amnesty." Then ʿUmar b. Saʿd called out in the army, "O cavalry of God, mount and rejoice." They mounted and advanced against them after the ʿaṣr prayer that day. Al-Ḥusayn was sitting in front of his tent, clasping his knees with his sword, and he dozed and his head nodded. His sister Zaynab heard the clamor and came near him and woke him. He raised his head as it was and said, "I saw the Messenger of God ﷺ in my sleep, and he said to me: 'You are coming to us.'" She struck her face and said, "O my grief!" He said, "There is no grief for you, little sister. Be calm, may the Merciful have mercy on you." His brother al-ʿAbbās b. ʿAlī said to him, "Brother, the people have come to you." He said, "Go to them and ask them what has appeared to them." He went to them with about twenty horsemen and said, "What is the matter with you?" They said, "The amīr's order has come: either you submit to his judgment, or we fight you." He said, "Stay where you are until I go to Abū ʿAbd Allāh and inform him." He went back while his companions stopped, and they began exchanging words and reproaching one another. Al-Ḥusayn's companions said, "What an evil people you are! You want to kill the progeny of your Prophet ﷺ and the best of the people of their time?" Then al-ʿAbbās b. ʿAlī returned from al-Ḥusayn to them and said, "Abū ʿAbd Allāh says to you: Withdraw this evening so that he may consider his affair tonight." ʿUmar b. Saʿd said to Shamir b. Dhī al-Jawshan, "What do you say?" He replied, "You are the amīr, and the opinion is yours." ʿAmr b. al-Ḥajjāj b. Salama al-Zubaydī said, "Glory be to God! By God, if a man from al-Daylam asked you that, it would be proper to grant it to him." Qays b. al-Ashʿath said, "Grant them what they asked you, for by my life, they will come to you with fighting in the morning." That is how the matter went. When al-ʿAbbās returned, al-Ḥusayn said to him, "Go back and turn them away this evening, so that perhaps we may pray to our Lord this night, call upon Him, and seek His forgiveness. God knows from me that I love prayer to Him, recitation of His Book, seeking forgiveness, and supplication." The testament of al-Ḥusayn to his family Al-Ḥusayn made his testament to his family that night and addressed his companions at the beginning of the night. He praised God Almighty and extolled Him, and invoked blessings upon His Messenger ﷺ with eloquent and lucid expressions, and said to his companions: "Whoever wishes to depart to his family on this night of his, I give him permission, for the people only want me." Mālik b. al-Naḍr said, "I have a debt and a family." He said: "This night has covered you, so take it as a camel, so that each man of you may take the hand of one of my household and then go across the breadth of the land in the darkness of this night to your lands and cities, for the people only want me. If they seize me, they will cease seeking anyone else. So go until God, Mighty and Majestic, brings relief." His brothers, sons, and nephews said to him, "We have no life after you, and may God not show us in you what we hate." Al-Ḥusayn said, "O sons of ʿAqīl, your brother Muslim is enough for you. Go, for I have permitted you." They said, "What will people say? That we abandoned our elder and our master, and the sons of our paternal uncles, the best of uncles, and did not shoot an arrow with them, did not thrust a spear with them, and did not strike a sword with them, out of desire for the life of this world? No, by God, we will not do that. Rather, we will ransom you with our lives, our wealth, and our families, and fight alongside you until we reach your destination. May God make life ugly after you." Muslim b. ʿAwsaja al-Asadī said something similar, and Saʿīd b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥanafī said, "By God, we will not abandon you until God knows that we have preserved the absence of the Messenger of God ﷺ in you. By God, if I knew that I would be killed for you a thousand times, and that God would thereby avert killing from you and from the lives of these youths of your household, I would love that. How much more when it is only a single killing?" A group of his companions spoke with words resembling one another in a single vein, saying, "By God, we will not part from you. Our lives are the ransom for you. We will shield you with our throats, our foreheads, our hands, and our bodies. If we are killed, we will have fulfilled and discharged what is upon us." His brother al-ʿAbbās said, "May God not show us the day of losing you, and we have no need of life after you." His companions followed one another in that. Abū Mikhnaf said with his chain from ʿAlī b. al-Ḥusayn Zayn al-ʿĀbidīn: "I was sitting that evening in the morning of which my father was killed, and my aunt Zaynab was nursing me, when my father withdrew into his tent with his companions. With him was Ḥuwayy, the mawlā of Abū Dharr al-Ghifārī, who was working on his sword and repairing it, while my father said: O Time, fie on you as a friend! How many at sunrise and at evening of a companion or a sought one slain, while Time is not content with a substitute? The matter belongs only to the Majestic, and every living thing follows the path. He said: He repeated it twice or three times, and I understood what he meant. Tears choked me, but I held them back and kept silent, and I knew that the affliction had descended. As for my aunt, she rose unveiled until she reached him and said, 'O my bereavement! Would that death had deprived me of life today. My mother Fāṭima has died, and ʿAlī my father, and Ḥasan my brother. O successor of the departed and support of the remaining!' He looked at her and said, 'Little sister, do not let Satan take away your forbearance.' She said, 'May my father and mother be your ransom, O Abū ʿAbd Allāh, you have been marked for death.' She struck her face, tore her garment at the neck, and fell down in a swoon. He rose to her, poured water on her face, and said, 'Little sister, fear God and seek consolation in God's consolation. Know that the people of the earth die, and the people of heaven do not remain, and that everything perishes except His face, who created the creation by His power and causes them to die by His subjugation and His might, and will bring them back so they return. He is alone and unique. Know that my father is better than I, my mother is better than I, my brother is better than I, and for me, for them, and for every Muslim there is a good example in the Messenger of God ﷺ.' Then he adjured her not to do any of that after his death. Then he took her hand and returned her to me. Then he went out to his companions and ordered them to bring their tents close to one another, so that the tent ropes entered into one another, and not to leave the enemy any approach to them except from one direction, with the tents on their right, their left, and behind them." Al-Ḥusayn and his companions spent that entire night praying, seeking forgiveness, supplicating, and humbling themselves, while the cavalry of their enemy’s guard circled behind them, commanded by ʿAzrah b. Qays al-Aḥmasī. Al-Ḥusayn recited: “And let not those who disbelieve ever think that [because] We extend their time [in the world] it is better for them. We only extend it for them so that they may increase in sin, and for them is a humiliating punishment. Allah would not leave the believers in that [state] you are in [presently] until He separates the evil from the good” [Āl ʿImrān: 178–179]. A man from among that cavalry, who was guarding on behalf of Ibn Ziyād’s men, heard it and said: “We, by the Lord of the Kaʿbah, are the good ones; Allah has distinguished us from you.” He said: I recognized him, so I said to Burayr b. Khuḍayr: “Do you know who this is?” He said: “No.” I said: “This is Abū Ḥarb al-Sabīʿī, ʿAbd Allāh b. Shahr. He was a jester, an idle man, yet noble, brave, and daring. Saʿīd b. Qays sometimes imprisoned him for a crime.” Burayr b. Khuḍayr said to him: “O you wicked man! Since when have you been among the good ones?!” He said: “Who are you, woe to you?!” He said: “I am Burayr b. Khuḍayr.” He said: “Indeed we belong to Allah! You are ruined, by Allah. By Allah, it grieves me, O Burayr, that you will be killed.” He said: I said to him: “O Abū Ḥarb, would you like to repent to Allah from your grave sins? For by Allah, we are indeed the good ones and you are indeed the wicked ones.” He said: “Yes, and I am one of the two witnesses to that.” He said: “Woe to you! Does your knowledge not benefit you?!” He said: Then ʿAzrah b. Qays, the commander of the detachment guarding us, rebuked him, and he turned away from us. He said: When ʿUmar b. Saʿd prayed the morning prayer with his companions on Friday—or, it is said, Saturday—and it was the Day of ʿĀshūrāʾ, he prepared for battle. Al-Ḥusayn also prayed with his companions, who were thirty-two horsemen and forty foot soldiers. Then he turned and arrayed them: he placed Zuhayr b. al-Qayn on his right wing, Ḥabīb b. Muẓahhir on the left wing, and gave his banner to his brother al-ʿAbbās b. ʿAlī. They placed the tents, with the women inside them, behind their backs. Al-Ḥusayn had ordered during the night that they dig a trench behind their tents, and they threw into it firewood, wood, and reeds, then set it ablaze so that no one could reach their tents from behind. ʿUmar b. Saʿd placed ʿAmr b. al-Ḥajjāj al-Zubaydī on his right wing, Shimr b. Dhī al-Jawshan on his left wing—the name of Dhū al-Jawshan was Shuraḥbīl b. al-Aʿwar b. ʿAmr b. Muʿāwiyah, who is al-Ḍibāb b. Kilāb—ʿAzrah b. Qays al-Aḥmasī over the cavalry, Shabath b. Ribʿī over the infantry, and gave the banner to his mawlā Dhuwayd. The people halted facing each other at that spot. Al-Ḥusayn went aside to a tent that had been pitched for him, bathed in it, applied depilatory paste, and perfumed himself with abundant musk. Some of the commanders entered after him and did as he had done. Some of them said to one another: “What is this at this hour?!” Some of them said: “Leave us alone; by Allah, this is no hour for vanity.” Burayr b. Khuḍayr said: “By Allah, my people know that I never loved vanity, whether as a youth or as a mature man. But by Allah, I am rejoicing at what we are about to meet. By Allah, between us and the wide-eyed maidens of Paradise there is nothing except that these people should fall upon us and kill us.” Then al-Ḥusayn mounted his horse, took a copy of the Qur’an and placed it before him, then faced the people, raising his hands and supplicating with what was mentioned earlier: “O Allah, You are my trust in every distress, and my hope in every hardship,” to the end of it. He mounted his son ʿAlī b. al-Ḥusayn—who was weak and ill—on a horse called Lāḥiq. Al-Ḥusayn’s counsel to the people before the battle. Al-Ḥusayn called out: “O people, listen to a counsel I offer you.” All the people fell silent. After praising and lauding Allah, he said: “O people, if you accept from me and deal fairly with me, you will be happier for it, and you will have no claim against me. But if you do not accept from me, then gather your plan and your partners, then let not your plan be obscure to you, then carry it out against me and give me no respite [Yūnus: 71]. Indeed, my protector is Allah, who sent down the Book, and He protects the righteous [al-Aʿrāf: 196].” When his sisters and daughters heard that, their voices rose in weeping. At that he said: “May Ibn ʿAbbās not be far off,” meaning when he advised him not to bring the women with him and to leave them in Makkah until his affairs were settled. Then he sent his brother al-ʿAbbās and his son ʿAlī, and they silenced them. Then he began to mention to the people his virtue, the greatness of his lineage, his lofty rank, and his nobility, saying: “Examine yourselves: is it proper for you to fight one like me, when I am the son of the daughter of your Prophet ﷺ? There is no son of a prophet’s daughter on the face of the earth other than me. ʿAlī is my father, Jaʿfar Dhū al-Janāḥayn is my uncle, and Ḥamzah, the master of the martyrs, is my father’s uncle. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said of me and my brother: ‘These two are the masters of the youth of the people of Paradise.’ If you believe what I say, then it is the truth. By Allah, I have never deliberately uttered a lie since I learned that Allah abhors lying. Otherwise, ask the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about that: Jābir b. ʿAbd Allāh, Abū Saʿīd, Sahl b. Saʿd, Zayd b. Arqam, and Anas b. Mālik; they will inform you of it. Woe to you! Do you not fear Allah?! Is there not in this a restraint for you from shedding my blood?!” At that, Shimr b. Dhī al-Jawshan said: “He worships Allah on a narrow edge. I do not know what he is saying.” Ḥabīb b. Muẓahhir said to him: “By Allah, O Shimr, you worship Allah on seventy edges, and you do not know what he is saying, because Allah has sealed your heart.” Then he said: “O people, let me return to my place of safety on earth.” They said: “What prevents you from submitting to the judgment of your cousins?” He said: “Allah forbid that I should give them my hand as a humiliated man gives, or acknowledge as slaves acknowledge. O servants of Allah, I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord from every arrogant one who does not believe in the Day of Reckoning [Ghāfir: 27].” Then he made his mount kneel and ordered ʿUqbah b. Samʿān, and he hobbled it. Then he said: “Tell me: do you seek me for a slain man of yours whom I killed? Or for wealth of yours that I consumed? Or for retaliation for a wound?” He said: They would not speak to him. He said: He called out: “O Shabath b. Ribʿī! O Ḥajjār b. Abjar! O Qays b. al-Ashʿath! O Zayd b. al-Ḥārith! Did you not write to me that the fruits had ripened and the pastures had grown green, so come to us, for you will come upon an assembled army?” They said to him: “We did not.” He said: “Glory be to Allah! By Allah, you did.” Then he said: “O people, since you have come to dislike me, let me depart from you.” Qays b. al-Ashʿath said to him: “Will you not submit to the judgment of your cousins? They will not harm you, and you will see from them only what you like.” Al-Ḥusayn said to him: “You are the brother of your brother. Do you want the Banū Hāshim to seek you for more than the blood of Muslim b. ʿAqīl? No, by Allah, I will not give them my hand as a humiliated man gives, nor acknowledge to them as slaves acknowledge.” He said: They advanced crawling toward him. A group of about thirty horsemen, it is said, from among those had joined al-Ḥusayn’s army, among them al-Ḥurr b. Yazīd, the commander of the Kufans’ vanguard. He apologized to al-Ḥusayn for what they had done. He said: “Had I known that they were of this intention, I would have marched with you to Yazīd.” Al-Ḥusayn accepted it from him. Then he stepped forward before al-Ḥusayn’s companions, addressed ʿUmar b. Saʿd, and said: “Woe to you! Will you not accept from the son of the daughter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ one of the three options he offers you?” He said: “If that were up to me, I would accept, but Ibn Ziyād refuses me.” Then he addressed the people of Kufa, reviling and rebuking them, saying: “Woe to you! You invited him, then when he came you abandoned him. And that was not enough for you until you came to fight him. You have denied him and his women water from the Euphrates, from which the Jew, the Christian, and the Magian drink, and in which the pigs and dogs of al-Sawād wallow. He is like a captive in your hands, possessing for himself neither benefit nor harm.” He said: Then ʿUmar b. Saʿd advanced and said to his mawlā: “O Dhuwayd, bring forward your banner.” So he brought it forward. Then ʿUmar bared his forearm, shot an arrow, and said: “Bear witness that I am the first to shoot at the people.” He said: The people exchanged arrows. Yasār, the mawlā of Ziyād, and Sālim, the mawlā of ʿUbayd Allāh, came out and said: “Who will come out for single combat?” ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmayr al-Kalbī came out against them after seeking al-Ḥusayn’s permission. He killed Yasār first, then killed Sālim after him. Sālim had struck him a blow that cut off the fingers of his left hand. A man called ʿAbd Allāh b. Ḥawzah charged until he stood before al-Ḥusayn and said to him: “O Ḥusayn, rejoice in the Fire!” Al-Ḥusayn said to him: “Never! Woe to you! I am going to a merciful Lord and an obeyed intercessor. Rather, you are more deserving of the Fire.” They said: He turned away, but his horse stumbled and he fell, and his left foot became caught in the stirrup. Muslim b. ʿAwsajah rushed at him and struck him, severing his right leg. His horse bolted with him, and there was no stone he passed without striking it with his head until he died. Abū Mikhnaf narrated from Abū Janāb, who said: Among us was a man called ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmayr, from Banū ʿUlaym. He had settled in Kufa and taken a house near Biʾr al-Jaʿd in Hamdān. With him was a wife from al-Namir b. Qāsiṭ. He saw the people preparing to go out to fight al-Ḥusayn and said: “By Allah, I was eager to fight the polytheists, and I hope that my fighting alongside the son of the daughter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ against these people will be better than fighting the polytheists and lighter in reward with Allah.” He went in to his wife and told her what he intended. She said: “You have done right—may Allah guide you aright—in your affair. Do it, and take me out with you.” He said: He departed with her at night until he came to al-Ḥusayn. Then he mentioned the story of ʿUmar b. Saʿd shooting the arrow, and the story of his killing Yasār the mawlā of Ziyād and Sālim the mawlā of Ibn Ziyād, and that ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmayr sought al-Ḥusayn’s permission to go out against them. Al-Ḥusayn looked at him and saw a dark-skinned, tall man with strong forearms and broad shoulders. Al-Ḥusayn said: “I think he is a killer of champions. Go out if you wish.” He went out, and they said to him: “Who are you?” He named his lineage to them. They said: “We do not know you.” He said to them: “O sons of a fornicatress! Do you have a desire to fight only someone you know from among the people?! Does anyone come out against you except one who is better than you?” Then he attacked Yasār, and it was as if yesterday had passed. While he was engaged with him, Sālim, the mawlā of Ibn Ziyād, charged at him, and someone shouted to him: “The slave has caught up with you!” He said: He did not notice him until he was upon him. He struck him on his left hand and cut off his fingers. Then the Kalbī turned on him and struck him until he killed him. He came forward reciting rajz verses, saying: If you do not know me, I am the son of Kalb, My lineage in ʿUlaym is sufficient for me. I am a man of strength and firm sinew, And I am not feeble in the face of distress. I pledge to you, O Umm Wahb, Thrusting among them, advancing, and striking, The striking of a youth who believes in the Lord. Then Umm Wahb took a tent pole and came toward her husband, saying to him: “May my father and mother be your ransom! Fight in defense of the pure ones, the progeny of Muḥammad, peace and blessings be upon him.” He turned toward her to send her back to the women, but she came and pulled at his garment. She said: “Let me be with you.” Al-Ḥusayn called to her: “Go back to the women and sit with them, for fighting is not incumbent upon women.” So she returned to them. He said: Single combats increased that day between the two sides, and victory in them belonged to the companions of al-Ḥusayn, because of their strength of courage and because they were ready to die, having no protection except their swords. Some of the commanders advised ʿUmar b. Saʿd against single combats. ʿAmr b. al-Ḥajjāj, the commander of the right wing, charged and kept saying: “Fight those who have deviated from the religion and separated from the Imam and the community!” Al-Ḥusayn said to him: “Woe to you, O Ḥajjāj! Are you inciting the people against me?! Have we deviated from the religion while you have remained steadfast upon it?! You will know, when your souls depart from your bodies, who is more deserving of entering the Fire.” The first of al-Ḥusayn’s companions to be killed. In this assault Muslim b. ʿAwsajah was killed. He was the first of al-Ḥusayn’s companions to be killed. Al-Ḥusayn walked to him, and he was at his last breath; he asked mercy for him. Ḥabīb b. Muẓahhir said to him: “Rejoice in Paradise!” He said to him in a weak voice: “May Allah give you glad tidings of good.” Then Ḥabīb said to him: “Were it not that I know I will follow you soon, I would carry out what you enjoin upon me.” Muslim b. ʿAwsajah said to him: “I enjoin upon you this man—and he pointed to al-Ḥusayn—that you die defending him.” They said: Then Shimr b. Dhī al-Jawshan charged with the left wing and they headed toward al-Ḥusayn. The horsemen among his companions defended him with a mighty defense and fought fiercely on his behalf. They sent requesting from ʿUmar b. Saʿd a detachment of foot archers. He sent them about five hundred. They began shooting the horses of al-Ḥusayn’s companions and hamstrung them all until all of them became foot soldiers. When they hamstrung the horse of al-Ḥurr b. Yazīd, he dismounted with his sword in his hand like a lion, saying: If you hamstring my horse, I am the son of al-Ḥurr, Braver than a thick-maned lion. It is said that ʿUmar b. Saʿd ordered the demolition of those structures that prevented fighting from the direction they faced. Al-Ḥusayn’s companions began killing anyone who attempted that, so he ordered them to be burned. Al-Ḥusayn said: “Let them burn them, for they will not be able to pass through them after they are burned.” Shimr b. Dhī al-Jawshan, may Allah disfigure him, came to al-Ḥusayn’s tent and pierced it with his lance—meaning the tent—and said: “Bring me fire so I may burn it with those inside!” The women screamed and came out of it. Al-Ḥusayn said to him: “Do you want to burn my family?! May Allah burn you in the Fire.” Shabath b. Ribʿī came to Shimr, may Allah disfigure him, and said to him: “I have never seen anything uglier than your words and your stance here. Do you want to frighten the women?!” He felt ashamed and thought about turning back. Ḥumayd b. Muslim said: I said to Shimr: “Glory be to God! This is not proper for you. Do you want to combine two traits upon yourself: you torment with God’s torment, and you kill children and women! By God, in your killing of the men there is what would satisfy your commander.” He said: He said to me: “Who are you?” I said: “I will not tell you who I am.” I feared that if I told him and he recognized me, he would harm me before the sultan. Zuhayr b. al-Qayn, with a group of al-Ḥusayn’s companions, charged at Shimr b. Dhī al-Jawshan and dislodged him from his position, and they killed Abū ʿAzzah al-Ḍibābī, who was one of Shimr’s companions. When a man from al-Ḥusayn’s companions was killed, the gap among them became evident, but when a large group of Ibn Ziyād’s companions was killed, that was not evident among them because of their great number. The time of noon prayer came upon them, and al-Ḥusayn said: “Order them to cease fighting until we pray.” A man from the people of al-Kūfah said: “It will not be accepted from you.” Ḥabīb b. Muẓahhir said to him: “Woe to you! Is prayer accepted from you but not from the family of the Messenger of God ﷺ?!” Ḥabīb fought fiercely until he was killed, may God have mercy on him, and his head was carried to Ibn Ziyād. Then al-Ḥusayn prayed the noon prayer with his companions as the prayer of fear, then they fought fiercely after it. The enemy reached al-Ḥusayn, ؓ, and the champions of his companions defended him. Zuhayr b. al-Qayn was killed before al-Ḥusayn, and Nāfiʿ b. Hilāl al-Jamalī fought on his behalf and killed twelve of ʿUmar b. Saʿd’s companions besides those he wounded. Then he was taken captive and his upper arms were broken, and despite this Shimr b. Dhī al-Jawshan struck his neck before ʿUmar b. Saʿd. Then Shimr charged at al-Ḥusayn’s companions, saying: “Make way, enemies of God, make way for Shimr! He strikes them with his sword and does not flee.” The enemies pressed upon them from every side and multiplied against them. The first slain of Banū Abī Ṭālib Al-Ḥusayn’s companions perished one after another before him, until no one remained with him except Suwayd b. ʿAmr b. Abī al-Muṭāʿ al-Khathʿamī. The first of Banū Abī Ṭālib to be killed that day was ʿAlī al-Akbar, son of al-Ḥusayn b. ʿAlī, whose mother was Laylā bt. Abī Murrah b. ʿUrwah b. Masʿūd al-Thaqafī. Murrah b. Munqidh b. al-Nuʿmān al-ʿAbdī thrust at him and killed him. It is narrated that he kept fighting in defense of his father, saying: “I am ʿAlī b. Ḥusayn b. ʿAlī. We, by the Lord of the House, are more entitled to the Prophet. By God, the son of the base-born shall not rule over us. How do you see today my shielding of my father?” When Murrah thrust at him, the men surrounded him and cut him with their swords. Al-Ḥusayn said: “May God kill a people who killed you, O my son. How bold they are against God and against violating His sacred things! After you, let the world perish.” He said: A slave girl came out, as beautiful as the sun, and said: “O my brother, O son of my brother!” She was Zaynab bt. ʿAlī from Fāṭimah. She threw herself upon him while he was slain. He said: Al-Ḥusayn came, took her hand, and brought her into the tent. Al-Ḥusayn ordered him to be moved from there to before him near his tent. Then ʿAbd Allāh b. Muslim b. ʿAqīl was killed, then ʿAwn and Muḥammad, the two sons of ʿAbd Allāh b. Jaʿfar, were killed, then ʿAbd al-Raḥmān and Jaʿfar, the two sons of ʿAqīl b. Abī Ṭālib, were killed, then al-Qāsim b. al-Ḥasan b. ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib was killed. Abū Mikhnaf said: Fuḍayl b. Khadīj al-Kindī narrated to me that Yazīd b. Ziyād—and he was an archer, and he is Abū al-Shaʿthāʾ al-Kindī from Banū Bahdalah—knelt on his knees before al-Ḥusayn and shot a hundred arrows, of which only five fell to the ground. When he finished shooting, he said: “It has become clear to me that I have killed five persons.” He was among the first to be killed, and his rajaz that day was: “I am Yazīd, and my father is Muhāṣir, braver than a lion in its thicket, lurking. O Lord, I am a helper of al-Ḥusayn, and a forsaker and abandoner of Ibn Saʿd.” The killing of al-Ḥusayn They said: Al-Ḥusayn remained for a long part of the day, no man coming to him but turning away from him; no one liked to undertake his killing, until a man from Banū Baddāʾ called Mālik b. al-Nusayr came to him. He struck al-Ḥusayn with a sword on his head and wounded him. He had on a burnoose, and it became filled with blood. Al-Ḥusayn said to him: “May you not eat or drink with it, and may God gather you with the wrongdoers.” Then al-Ḥusayn threw off that burnoose and called for a turban and wrapped it on. He said: Then al-Ḥusayn became exhausted and sat at the door of his tent. A small boy of his children was brought to him, and he seated him in his lap, then began kissing him, smelling him, bidding him farewell, and enjoining his family. A man from Banū Asad called Ibn Mūqid al-Nār shot an arrow at him and slaughtered that boy. Al-Ḥusayn caught his blood in his hand and cast it toward the sky, saying: “Lord, if You have withheld victory from us from the sky, make it for what is better, and avenge us upon the wrongdoers.” ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUqbah al-Ghanawī shot an arrow at Abū Bakr b. al-Ḥusayn and killed him as well. Then ʿAbd Allāh, al-ʿAbbās, ʿUthmān, Jaʿfar, and Muḥammad, the sons of ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib, al-Ḥusayn’s paternal brothers, ؓ all of them, were killed. Al-Ḥusayn’s thirst became intense, and he tried to reach the water of the Euphrates, but they prevented him from it. He reached a drink of it, and when he bent toward it, Ḥuṣayn b. Numayr shot an arrow at him in his jaw and lodged it. Al-Ḥusayn pulled it out of his jaw, and blood gushed forth. He caught it with his two hands, then raised them to the sky while they were full of blood, then cast it toward the sky, saying: “O God, count them by number and kill them one by one, and leave none of them on the earth.” He invoked a powerful supplication against them. Then Shimr came with a group of brave men until they surrounded al-Ḥusayn while he was at his tent, and no one remained with him to stand between them and him. A boy came rushing from the tents, as if he were the full moon, with two pearls in his ears swaying. Zaynab bt. ʿAlī came out to turn him back, but he refused her, and he came defending his uncle. A man among them struck him with a sword, and he shielded himself with his hand, and it cut it off except for a piece of skin. He said: “O my father.” Al-Ḥusayn said to him: “O my son, count your reward with God, for you will join your righteous forefathers.” Then the men charged at al-Ḥusayn from every side while he moved among them with the sword right and left, and they scattered from him like goats from a lion. His sister Zaynab bt. Fāṭimah came out to him, saying: “Would that the sky fell upon the earth!” ʿUmar b. Saʿd came, and she said: “O ʿUmar, are you pleased that Abū ʿAbd Allāh is killed while you look on?” Tears streamed down his beard, and he turned his face away from her. Then no one advanced to kill him until Shimr b. Dhī al-Jawshan called out: “Woe to you! What are you waiting for with the man? Kill him, may your mothers be bereft of you!” The men charged at al-Ḥusayn from every side. Zurʿah b. Sharīk al-Tamīmī struck him on his left hand and struck his shoulder, then they withdrew from him while he staggered and fell forward. Then Sinān b. Anas b. ʿAmr al-Nakhaʿī came to him and thrust him with a spear, and he fell. Then he dismounted and slaughtered him and cut off his head, then handed his head to Khawlī b. Yazīd. It is said: the one who killed him was Shimr b. Dhī al-Jawshan. It is said: a man from Madhḥij. It is said: ʿUmar b. Saʿd b. Abī Waqqāṣ. But that is nothing; ʿUmar was only the commander of the detachment that killed al-Ḥusayn. Sinān and others took his spoils, and the people divided what was of his property, his stores, and what was in his tent, even the outer garments on the women. Abū Mikhnaf said, from Jaʿfar b. Muḥammad: Thirty-three stab wounds and thirty-four blows were found on al-Ḥusayn when he was killed. Shimr b. Dhī al-Jawshan intended to kill ʿAlī b. al-Ḥusayn al-Aṣghar, Zayn al-ʿĀbidīn, while he was a small, sick boy, until Ḥumayd b. Muslim, one of his companions, turned him away from that. ʿUmar b. Saʿd came and said: “Let no one enter upon these women, and let no one kill this boy, and whoever took anything of their belongings, let him return it to them.” He said: By God, no one returned anything. ʿAlī b. al-Ḥusayn said to him: “May you be rewarded with good, for God has averted evil from me through your words.” They said: Then Sinān b. Anas came to the door of ʿUmar b. Saʿd’s tent and called out at the top of his voice: “Load my riding camels with silver and gold! I killed the veiled king. I killed the best of people in mother and father, and the best of them when lineages are traced.” ʿUmar b. Saʿd said: “Bring him in to me.” When he entered, he threw the whip at him and said: “Woe to you! You are mad! By God, if Ibn Ziyād heard you say this, he would strike your neck.” ʿUmar b. Saʿd granted a favor to ʿUqbah b. Samʿān when he informed him that he was a client, and no one escaped from them except him. Al-Muraqqaʿ b. Thumāmah was taken captive, and Ibn Ziyād granted him a favor. The number of those killed among al-Ḥusayn’s companions Seventy-two persons of al-Ḥusayn’s companions were killed. The people of al-Ghāḍiriyyah from Banū Asad buried them one day after they were killed, may God have mercy on them and honor them. It is narrated from Muḥammad b. al-Ḥanafiyyah that he said: Seventeen men were killed with al-Ḥusayn, all of them from the descendants of Fāṭimah. From al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī that he said: Sixteen men were killed with al-Ḥusayn, all of them from his household, who had no equal on the face of the earth that day. Another said: Twenty-three men from his sons, brothers, and household were killed with him. From the sons of ʿAlī, ؓ: Jaʿfar, al-Ḥusayn, al-ʿAbbās, Muḥammad, ʿUthmān, and Abū Bakr. From the sons of al-Ḥusayn: ʿAlī al-Akbar and ʿAbd Allāh. From the sons of his brother al-Ḥasan, three: ʿAbd Allāh, al-Qāsim, and Abū Bakr, sons of al-Ḥasan b. ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib. From the sons of ʿAbd Allāh b. Jaʿfar, two: ʿAwn and Muḥammad. From the sons of ʿAqīl: Jaʿfar, ʿAbd Allāh, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, and Muslim, who was killed before that as we have mentioned. These are four from his loins, and two others: ʿAbd Allāh b. Muslim b. ʿAqīl and Muḥammad b. Abī Saʿīd b. ʿAqīl, so they complete six from the sons of ʿAqīl. About them the poet says: “Lament nine from the loins of ʿAlī who were struck, and six from ʿAqīl. And the namesake of the Prophet was left among them, they had struck him with a polished blade.” Among those killed with al-Ḥusayn at Karbalāʾ was his maternal brother by suckling, ʿAbd Allāh b. Buqṭur. It is said: he was killed before that when he sent a letter with him to the people of al-Kūfah, and he was taken to Ibn Ziyād, who killed him. Eighty-eight men from the people of al-Kūfah, of ʿUmar b. Saʿd’s companions, were killed besides the wounded. ʿUmar b. Saʿd prayed over them and buried them. It is said: ʿUmar b. Saʿd summoned ten horsemen, and they trampled al-Ḥusayn with their horses until they pressed him to the ground on the day of the battle. Mention of the names of those killed with him Sulaymān said: When al-Ḥusayn and those with him were killed, their heads were carried to Ibn Ziyād. Kindah brought thirteen heads, their leader being Qays b. al-Ashʿath. Hawāzin brought twenty heads, their leader being Shimr b. Dhī al-Jawshan al-Ḍibābī. Banū Tamīm brought seventeen heads. Banū Asad brought six heads. Madhḥij brought seven heads. The rest of the army brought seven heads. That is seventy heads. Al-Ḥusayn was killed; Sinān b. Anas al-Nakhaʿī killed him, may God curse him. Al-ʿAbbās b. ʿAlī was killed, whose mother was Umm al-Banīn bt. Ḥizām; Zayd b. Ruqād al-Junaī and Ḥakīm b. al-Ṭufayl al-Sinbisī killed him. Jaʿfar b. ʿAlī was killed, whose mother was also Umm al-Banīn. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAlī was killed, whose mother was also Umm al-Banīn. ʿUthmān b. ʿAlī was killed, whose mother was also Umm al-Banīn; Khawlī b. Yazīd shot an arrow at him and killed him. Muḥammad b. ʿAlī was killed, whose mother was an umm walad; a man from Banū Dārim killed him. Abū Bakr b. ʿAlī was killed, whose mother was Laylā bt. Masʿūd al-Dārimiyyah; there is doubt about his killing. ʿAlī b. al-Ḥusayn b. ʿAlī was killed, whose mother was Laylā daughter of Abū Murrah b. ʿUrwah al-Thaqafī, and her mother was Maymūnah daughter of Abū Sufyān b. Abū Bakr, son of his brother al-Ḥasan, was also killed, whose mother was an umm walad [ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUqbah al-Ghanawī killed him. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Ḥasan b. ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib was killed, whose mother was an umm walad]; Ḥarmalah b. al-Kāhin killed him, shooting an arrow at him. Al-Qāsim b. al-Ḥasan was also killed; Saʿd b. ʿAmr b. Nufayl al-Azdī killed him. ʿAwn b. Abī Jaʿfar b. Abī Ṭālib was killed, whose mother was Jumānah bt. al-Musayyab b. Najabah al-Fazārī; ʿAbd Allāh b. Quṭbah al-Ṭāʾī killed him. Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Jaʿfar was killed, whose mother was al-Khawṣāʾ bt. Khaṣafah b. Taym Allāh b. Thaʿlabah; ʿĀmir b. Nahshal al-Taymī killed him. Jaʿfar b. ʿAqīl b. Abī Ṭālib was killed, whose mother was Umm Banīn daughter of al-Shuqr b. al-Hiḍāb; Bishr b. al-Khūṭ al-Hamdānī killed him. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAqīl was killed, whose mother was an umm walad; ʿUthmān b. Muslim b. ʿAqīl was killed in al-Kūfah, whose mother was an umm walad. ʿAbd Allāh b. Muslim b. ʿAqīl was killed, whose mother was Ruqayyah daughter of ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib; ʿAmr b. Ṣubayḥ al-Ṣaydāwī killed him, and it is said Mālik b. Usayd al-Ḥaḍramī killed him. Muḥammad b. Abī Saʿīd b. ʿAqīl was killed, whose mother was an umm walad; Laqīṭ b. Yāsir al-Juhanī killed him. Al-Ḥasan b. al-Ḥasan b. ʿAlī was considered too young—whose mother was Khawlah bt. Manẓūr b. Zabbān al-Fazārī—and ʿAmr b. al-Ḥusayn was considered too young, whose mother was an umm walad, so they were not killed. Among the mawālī, Sulaymān, client of al-Ḥusayn, was killed; Sulaymān b. ʿAwf al-Ḥaḍramī killed him. Munjiḥ, also client of al-Ḥusayn, was killed. ʿAbd Allāh b. Buqṭur, al-Ḥusayn’s suckling brother, was killed. Sending al-Ḥusayn's head to Ibn Ziyād: His head was dispatched on that same day to Ibn Ziyād with Khawalī b. Yazīd al-Aṣbaḥī. When he reached the palace with it, he found it locked, so he returned to his dwelling, put it under a washbasin, and said to his wife Nawār bt. Mālik: "I have brought you the might of the age." She said: "And what is it?" He said: "This is the head of al-Ḥusayn." She said: "People come with gold and silver, and you come with the head of the son of the daughter of the Messenger of God ﷺ?! By God, no bed will ever bring me and you together." Then she rose from the bed, and he summoned another wife of his from the Banū Asad, and she slept with him. The second one said: "By God, I kept seeing a light blazing from that washbasin up to the sky, and white birds fluttering around it." When morning came, he went with it to Ibn Ziyād and presented it before him. It is said that with him were the heads of the rest of his companions, and this is the well-known account. Their total was seventy-two heads, because no one was killed without his head being cut off and carried to Ibn Ziyād. Ibn Ziyād then sent them to Yazīd b. Muʿāwiyah in Syria. Imām Aḥmad said with his chain of transmission from Anas, who said: ʿUbayd Allāh b. Ziyād was brought the head of al-Ḥusayn and placed it in a basin. He began to poke at it and said something about its beauty. Anas said: "He was the one among them who most resembled the Messenger of God ﷺ, and his hair was dyed with wasmah." Al-Ḥāfiẓ Abū Bakr al-Bazzār said with his chain of transmission from Anas, who said: When ʿUbayd Allāh b. Ziyād was brought the head of al-Ḥusayn, he began to poke at his front teeth with a staff, saying: "He was indeed—I think he said—handsome." I said: "By God, I shall grieve you. I saw the Messenger of God ﷺ kissing the place where your staff is touching." He said: "So he drew back." Al-Bazzār transmitted it uniquely from this route, and he said: We do not know of anyone who related it from Ḥumayd other than Yūsuf b. ʿAbdah, and he is a well-known man from the people of Basra, and there is no harm in him. Abū Mikhnaf said with his chain from Ḥumayd b. Muslim, who said: ʿUmar b. Saʿd summoned me and sent me to his family to give them the good news of God's victory and his safety. I set out until I came to his family and informed them. Then I went back until I entered and found Ibn Ziyād seated before the people, and the delegation that had come to him had entered. I entered among those who entered, and there was the head of al-Ḥusayn placed before him, while he poked at his two front teeth with a staff for a while. Zayd b. Arqam said to him: "Raise this staff away from those two front teeth, for by God, besides whom there is no god, I saw the lips of the Messenger of God ﷺ upon these two lips, kissing them." Then the old man burst into tears. Ibn Ziyād said to him: "May God make your eyes weep! By God, were you not an old man who has become senile and lost your mind, I would strike your neck." He said: Then he rose and left. When he left, the people said: "By God, Zayd b. Arqam said words that, had Ibn Ziyād heard them, he would have killed him." He said: "I said: What did he say?" They said: "He passed by us saying: 'A slave has taken slaves as property. You, O assembly of Arabs, are slaves from this day onward. You killed the son of Fāṭimah and appointed the son of Marjānah as commander. He kills your best and enslaves your worst. You have accepted humiliation, so away with whoever accepts humiliation.'" Ibn Ziyād ordered that prayer be announced in congregation, and the people gathered. He ascended the pulpit, praised and extolled God, then mentioned what God had granted him of the killing of al-Ḥusayn, who had wanted to seize the kingship from them and divide their unity. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAfīf al-Azdī stood before him and said: "Woe to you, O Ibn Ziyād! You kill the descendants of the prophets and speak with the speech of the truthful ones." Ibn Ziyād ordered him to be seized, and he was killed and crucified. Then he ordered the head of al-Ḥusayn, and it was displayed in Kufa and paraded through its streets. Then he sent it with Zaḥr b. Qays, along with the heads of his companions, to Yazīd b. Muʿāwiyah in Syria. With Zaḥr was a company of horsemen, among them Abū Burdah b. ʿAwf al-Azdī and Ṭāriq b. Abī Ẓabyān al-Azdī. They set out until they brought all the heads to Yazīd b. Muʿāwiyah. Hishām said with his chain from al-Ghāz b. Rabīʿah al-Jurashī of Ḥimyar, who said: By God, I was with Yazīd b. Muʿāwiyah in Damascus when Zaḥr b. Qays came and entered upon Yazīd. Yazīd said to him: "Woe to you! What is behind you?" He said: "Rejoice, O Commander of the Faithful, in God's victory and support for you. Al-Ḥusayn b. ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib came against us with eighteen of his household and sixty men of his Shīʿah. We marched against them and asked them to surrender and submit to the judgment of the commander ʿUbayd Allāh b. Ziyād, or to fight. They chose fighting. We attacked them at sunrise and surrounded them on every side until the swords took their toll on the heads of the people. They fled with no place to flee and no refuge, seeking shelter from us among the hillocks and pits, as doves seek shelter from a hawk. By God, it was no more than the slaughter of a camel or a midday nap until we came upon the last of them. There are their bodies stripped bare, their clothes smeared with blood, their cheeks covered with dust. The sun scorches them and the wind blows over them; their visitors are the vultures and the eagles." He said: Then the eyes of Yazīd b. Muʿāwiyah filled with tears, and he said: "I would have been satisfied with your obedience without the killing of al-Ḥusayn. May God curse Ibn Marjānah! By God, had I been with him, I would have pardoned him, and may God have mercy on al-Ḥusayn." He did not give Zaḥr b. Qays anything. Abū Mikhnaf said with his chain from Abū ʿUmārah al-ʿAbsī, who said: Yaḥyā b. al-Ḥakam, the brother of Marwān b. al-Ḥakam, stood and said: Noble skulls beside al-Ṭaff are closer in kinship Than Ibn Ziyād the slave of vile lineage. Sumayyah's offspring have become as numerous as pebbles, While the daughter of the Messenger of God has no offspring. He said: Yazīd struck Yaḥyā b. al-Ḥakam on the chest and said: "Be silent." Muḥammad b. Ḥumayd al-Rāzī said with his chain from Mujāhid, who said: When the head of al-Ḥusayn was brought and placed before Yazīd, he recited these verses: Would that my elders at Badr had witnessed The Khazraj's anguish at the thrust of the spears, And they would have cried out and rejoiced, then Said to me: "May it be wholesome, do not ask." When the battle's mill ground with its full weight, And killing raged among ʿAbd al-Ashal. We have slain the weak among their nobles, And set right the deviation of Badr, so it was balanced. Mujāhid said: He played the hypocrite in them; by God, then by God, there remained no one in his army who did not abandon him. The scholars after this differed as to whether Ibn Ziyād sent the head from Kufa to Yazīd in Syria or not, upon two opinions. The first is more likely, and many reports have come regarding that, but God knows best. Abū Mikhnaf said with his chain from al-Qāsim b. Bukhayt, who said: When the head of al-Ḥusayn was placed before Yazīd b. Muʿāwiyah, he began to poke at his mouth with a staff he had in his hand, then said: "This and we are as al-Ḥuṣayn b. al-Ḥumām al-Murrī said: They split the skulls of men dear to us, Though they were more disobedient and more unjust." Abū Barzah al-Aslamī said to him: "By God, your staff has taken a place that I saw the Messenger of God ﷺ suck." Then he said to him: "Indeed, this one will come on the Day of Resurrection with Muḥammad ﷺ as his intercessor, and you will come with Ibn Ziyād as your intercessor." Then he rose and turned away. Sending the family and women of al-Ḥusayn to Yazīd b. Muʿāwiyah: As for the rest of his family, women, and household, ʿUmar b. Saʿd assigned guards to watch over them and protect them. They mounted them on riding camels in litters. When they passed the site of the battle, they saw al-Ḥusayn and his companions lying slain. There the women wept for him and wailed, and Zaynab lamented her brother al-Ḥusayn and her family, saying while she wept: "O Muḥammad! O Muḥammad! May the angels of heaven bless you. This is Ḥusayn in the open, wrapped in blood, his limbs cut into pieces. O Muḥammad! Your daughters are captives, and your offspring are slain, and the east wind blows dust over them." He said: By God, she made every enemy and friend weep. He said: Then they traveled with them in the litters from Karbalāʾ until they entered Kufa. Ibn Ziyād honored them and granted them allowances, clothing, and gifts. Then he sent them on; ʿUbayd Allāh sent them back to Syria with Shimr b. Dhī al-Jawshan and Muḥaffiz b. Thaʿlabah al-ʿĀʾidhī of Quraysh. With them was ʿAlī b. al-Ḥusayn Zayn al-ʿĀbidīn. Ibn Ziyād had wanted to kill him, but God turned him away from that. When he sent them, he sent him with his family, but he was shackled by the neck, and the rest of the family were in a bad state, as some have mentioned. When they entered upon Yazīd b. Muʿāwiyah, he said to ʿAlī b. al-Ḥusayn: "O ʿAlī, your father cut off my kinship, ignored my right, and contended with me for my authority, so God did to him what you have seen." ʿAlī said: "No disaster strikes on the earth or in yourselves but it is in a Book before We bring it into being [Q 57:22]." Yazīd said to his son Khālid: "Answer him." He said: Khālid did not know what to answer. Yazīd said to him: "Say: And whatever disaster strikes you is for what your hands have earned, but He pardons much [Q 42:30]." He was silent for a while. Then he summoned the women and children and saw a disgraceful sight. He said: "May God disfigure Ibn Marjānah! Had there been kinship and blood between you and him, he would not have done this to you, nor would he have sent you like this." Abū Mikhnaf narrated with his chain from Fāṭimah bt. ʿAlī, who said: When we were seated before Yazīd, he took pity on us, ordered something for us, and was kind to us. Then a red-complexioned man from the people of Syria stood before Yazīd and said: "O Commander of the Faithful, give me this one," meaning me, and I was a pretty young girl. I trembled in fright at his words, thinking that was permissible for them. I clung to the clothes of my sister Zaynab, who was older and wiser than I, and she knew that was not permitted. She said to that man: "You lie, by God, and you are vile! That is not for you or for him." Yazīd became angry and said to her: "You lie! By God, that is mine, and if I wished to do it, I would." She said: "No, by God, God has not made that for you unless you leave our religion and profess a religion other than ours." She said: Yazīd became enraged and flared up, then said: "Do you confront me with this? It was your father and your brother who left the religion." Zaynab said: "By the religion of God, the religion of my father, the religion of my brother, and my grandfather, you and your father and your grandfather have been guided." He said: "You lie, O enemy of God!" She said: "You are a commander given power; you revile unjustly and oppress with your authority." She said: By God, it was as if he felt ashamed and fell silent. Then the Syrian stood and said: "O Commander of the Faithful, give me this one." Yazīd said to him: "Go away, and may God grant you a deadly fate." Sending the family and women of al-Ḥusayn to Madinah: Then Yazīd ordered al-Nuʿmān b. Bashīr to send with them to Madinah a trustworthy man, with men and horses, and ʿAlī b. al-Ḥusayn was to be with them. Then he lodged the women with his own women in the caliphal residence. The women of the family of Muʿāwiyah received them, weeping and wailing over al-Ḥusayn. They held mourning for three days. Yazīd did not eat lunch or dinner except with ʿAlī b. al-Ḥusayn and ʿAmr b. al-Ḥasan accompanying him. One day Yazīd said to ʿAmr, who was very young: "Will you fight this one?" meaning his son Khālid b. Yazīd. He said: "Give me a knife and give him a knife so we can fight." Yazīd took him, embraced him, and said: "A trait I recognize from Akhzam: does a snake give birth to anything but a snake?!" When Yazīd bade them farewell, he said to ʿAlī b. al-Ḥusayn: "May God disfigure Ibn Marjānah! By God, had I been with him, he would not have asked me for anything but I would have granted it to him, and I would have warded off death from him with everything I could, even at the cost of some of my own children. But God decreed what you have seen." Then he equipped him, gave him abundant wealth, and said to him: "Write to me about any need you have." He clothed them and commended them to that messenger. That messenger whom he sent with them traveled at a distance from them along the road, keeping away from them while still within sight of them, and he served them until they reached Madinah. They gathered some of their jewelry and gave it to that man, but he refused to accept it and said: "I did that only for God and for your kinship to the Messenger of God ﷺ." This refutes the claim of the Rāfiḍah that they were carried on bare camels as naked captives, to the point that some of them falsely claimed that the Bactrian camels grew humps from that day to cover their private parts. Ibn Ziyād wrote to ʿAmr b. Saʿīd, governor of the two sanctuaries, giving him the good news of the killing of al-Ḥusayn. He ordered a crier, and it was announced in Madinah. When the women of Banū Hāshim heard it, their voices rose in weeping and wailing. ʿAmr b. Saʿīd began to say: "This is in return for the weeping of the women of ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān." A woman of Banū ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib came out to meet them with her hair spread and her sleeve over her head, weeping and saying: What will you say if the Prophet says to you: What did you do, you who are the last of the nations, With my kin and my family after my loss? Among them are captives and slain, smeared with blood. This was not my reward when I counseled you sincerely— That you would repay me with evil toward my kin. Abū Mikhnaf narrated with his chain from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿUbayd Abī al-Kanūd that it was the daughter of ʿAqīl who said this poetry. Likewise al-Zubayr b. Bakkār related that Zaynab the Younger, daughter of ʿAqīl b. Abī Ṭālib, said that when the family of al-Ḥusayn entered the Prophet's city. Abū Bakr b. al-Anbārī narrated with his chain that Zaynab bt. ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib, born of Fāṭimah, the wife of ʿAbd Allāh b. Jaʿfar and mother of his sons, lifted the curtain of her tent on the day of Karbalāʾ, the day al-Ḥusayn was killed, and said these verses. God knows best. Hishām b. al-Kalbī said with his chain from ʿUmar b. ʿIkrimah, who said: We awoke on the morning after al-Ḥusayn was killed in Madinah, and a freedwoman of ours told us: "Last night I heard a caller crying out, saying: O you who killed Ḥusayn in ignorance, Rejoice in punishment and exemplary torment! All the people of heaven call down upon you— From prophet, angel, and tribe. You have been cursed on the tongue of Ibn Dāwūd, And Moses, and the bearer of the Gospel. Hishām said: ʿAmr b. Ḥayzūm al-Kalbī told me, from his mother, who said: I heard this voice. Among what al-Ḥākim Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Naysābūrī and others cited from some of the early authorities concerning the killing of al-Ḥusayn: They brought your head, O son of the daughter of Muḥammad, wrapped in its blood, a thorough wrapping. And it is as though by you, O son of the daughter of Muḥammad, they killed openly, deliberately, a messenger. They killed you thirsty, and they did not consider in killing you the revelation and its interpretation. They cry 'God is greatest' because you were killed, but truly they killed by killing you the takbīr and the tahlīl. Al-Ḥuṣayn said: When al-Ḥusayn was killed, they remained for two or three months, as if the walls were smeared with blood at the hour the sun rose until it climbed high. He said: The head of the Jews of that time said: I never passed Karbalāʾ except that I spurred my mount until I left the place behind, because we used to relate that a son of a prophet would be killed in that place, so I was afraid. But when al-Ḥusayn was killed, I felt safe, so I would walk and not spur my mount. The killing of al-Ḥusayn, ؓ, was on Friday—al-Layth and Abū Nuʿaym said: Saturday—on the day of ʿĀshūrāʾ of Muḥarram in the year sixty-one. Hishām b. al-Kalbī said: In the year sixty-two, and this was also said by ʿAlī b. al-Madīnī. Ibn Lahīʿa said: In the year sixty-two or sixty-three. Others said: In the year sixty. The correct view is the first, at a place called al-Ṭaff, in Karbalāʾ in the land of Iraq. He was fifty-eight years old or about that. Abū Nuʿaym erred in saying he was killed at the age of sixty-five or sixty-six. Ibn al-Jawzī said: This has no basis, for he was born in the year four of the Hijrah. Whoever examines the length of the caliphs' reigns up to the time of his killing knows that he had not reached sixty. The statement of Jaʿfar b. Muḥammad is more correct. Hishām b. Muḥammad al-Kalbī said: He was killed in the year sixty-two, and this is a mistake.
