The caliphate of Muʿāwiyah b. Abī Sufyān

✧ (Those Who Died in This Year) Among those mentioned as having died in this year—I mean the year sixty—was Ṣafwān b. al-Muʿaṭṭal b. Raḥaḍah b. al-Muʾammal b. Khuzāʿī, Abū ʿAmr. His first military engagement was al-Muraysīʿ, and he was in the rear guard that day. He is the one whom the people of the slander accused regarding the Mother of the Believers, ؓ, but Allah exonerated him and her from what they said. He was one of the leaders of the Muslims. He used to sleep so deeply that sometimes the sun would rise upon him while he was still asleep and he would not wake. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him: "When you wake, then pray." Ṣafwān was killed as a martyr. Bilāl b. al-Ḥārith, Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān He was from the Banū Qurrah b. Māzin. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent him to Muzaynah, and with him was ʿAmr b. ʿAwf, to call them to arms when he intended to raid Makkah. Bilāl carried one of the three banners of Muzaynah that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had tied for them on the day of the conquest. He used to live on the mountain of Muzaynah and came often to Madinah. He died in this year at the age of eighty. Khirāsh b. Umayyah b. Rabīʿah, Abū Naḍlah: He was present at al-Muraysīʿ and al-Ḥudaybiyah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent him to Quraysh on a camel of his, saying: "We have come only to perform ʿumrah, and we have not come to fight." They recognized the camel of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and they wanted to fight Khirāsh, but those of his people who were there prevented them. He returned and told the Messenger of Allah ﷺ what he had encountered, and said: "Send someone more protected than me." So he called ʿUmar, who said: "O Messenger of Allah, Quraysh know my enmity toward them, and there is no one among them from Banū ʿAdī who would protect me. If you wish, I will go in to them." The Prophet ﷺ did not say anything to them. Then ʿUmar said: "But I will direct you to a man who is more honored than I in Makkah, with a larger clan and better protection: ʿUthmān." So he called him and sent him to them. Khirāsh is the one who shaved the head of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the day of al-Ḥudaybiyah, and he also shaved it during the ʿumrah of al-Jiʿirrānah. He continued to raid with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ until he passed away, and he died at the end of Muʿāwiyah's caliphate. 404 ʿAbd Allāh b. Thawb, Abū Muslim al-Khawlānī: From Shuraḥbīl b. Muslim al-Khawlānī, who said: While al-Aswad b. Qays al-ʿAnsī was in Yemen, he sent to Abū Muslim and said to him: "Do you testify that Muḥammad is the Messenger of Allah?" He said: "Yes." He said: "Then do you testify that I am the Messenger of Allah?" He said: "I do not hear." He said: "Do you testify that Muḥammad is the Messenger of Allah?" He said: "Yes." He said: "Then do you testify that I am the Messenger of Allah?" He said: "I do not hear." So he ordered a great fire, and it was kindled. Abū Muslim was thrown into it, but it did not harm him. The people of his kingdom said to him: "If you leave this man in your land, he will corrupt it for you." So he ordered him to depart. He arrived in Madinah after the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had passed away and Abū Bakr had been made caliph. He went to a pillar of the mosque and stood praying. ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb saw him and said: "Where is the man from?" He said: "From Yemen." He said: "What did the enemy of Allah do to our companion whom he burned with fire and it did not harm him?" He said: "That is ʿAbd Allāh b. Thawb." He said: "I adjure you by Allah, are you he?" He said: "O Allah, yes." He said: "Then he kissed him between the eyes, then brought him and seated him between himself and Abū Bakr, and said: 'Praise be to Allah who did not cause me to die until He showed me among the community of Muḥammad ﷺ one who was treated as Ibrāhīm, the Friend of the Merciful, was treated, ﷺ.'" From ʿUthmān b. ʿAṭāʾ, from his father, who said: Abū Muslim al-Khawlānī, when he returned from the mosque to his family, would say "Allāhu akbar" at the door of his house, and his wife would say "Allāhu akbar" in response. When he was in the courtyard of his house, he would say "Allāhu akbar" and his wife would answer him. One night he returned and said "Allāhu akbar" at the door of his house, but no one answered him. When he was in the courtyard, he said "Allāhu akbar," but no one answered him. When he was at the door of his room, he said "Allāhu akbar," but no one answered him. Usually, when he entered his room, his wife would take his cloak and sandals, then bring him his food. He said: He entered, and there was a lamp in the room, and his wife was sitting with her head bowed, poking with a stick she had. He said to her: "What is the matter with you?" She said: "You have a position with Muʿāwiyah, yet we have no servant. If only you would ask him to give us a servant and grant you something." He said: "O Allah, whoever has corrupted my wife against me, blind his sight." He said: A woman had come to her before that and said: "Your husband has a position with Muʿāwiyah. If only you would tell him to write to Muʿāwiyah for a servant, and he would give him, you would live well." He said: While that woman was sitting in her house, she noticed her sight failing, and she said: "Why has your lamp gone out?" They said: "No." So she recognized her sin and came to Abū Muslim weeping, asking him to pray to Allah, Mighty and Majestic, to restore her sight. Abū Muslim had mercy on her and prayed to Allah, Mighty and Majestic, and her sight was restored. In another narration: and she returned. Al-Nuʿmān b. Bashīr b. Saʿd b. Thaʿlabah b. Jilās: His mother was ʿAmrah bt. Rawāḥah, the sister of ʿAbd Allāh b. Rawāḥah. He was the first child born among the Anṣār in Madinah after the Hijrah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ chewed a date and put it in his mouth, and he sucked it, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "[Look] at the Anṣār and their love for dates." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed away when al-Nuʿmān b. Bashīr was eight years old. He narrated [from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ], and he was among those who supported ʿUthmān. He brought the shirt in which ʿUthmān was killed to Muʿāwiyah. Muʿāwiyah sent him as governor over Kufa, and he remained there as its governor for seven months. Then the matter led to his declaring allegiance to Ibn al-Zubayr, and the people of Homs killed him in this year. From al-Haytham b. ʿAdī, who said: When al-Nuʿmān b. Bashīr was dismissed from Kufa, Muʿāwiyah appointed him over Homs. Aʿshā Hamdān came to him as a delegate, and he said to him: "What has brought you, Abū al-Muṣabbiḥ?" He said: "I have come so that you may maintain ties with me, preserve my kinship, and pay my debt." Al-Nuʿmān bowed his head, then raised it and said: "By Allah, I have nothing." Then he said: "Wait," as if he remembered something. He stood up, ascended the pulpit, and said: "O people of Homs—and they numbered twenty thousand in the register—this is a cousin of yours, a man of the Qurʾān and nobility. He has come to you seeking your assistance. What do you think should be done for him?" They said: "May Allah guide the governor, decide for him." He refused them. They said: "Then we have decided for him against ourselves: from every man in the stipend, one dinar out of two, to be advanced to him from the treasury—forty thousand dinars." He took the money and began to recite: I have never seen, when needs press urgently, Anyone like Nuʿmān—Nuʿmān of generosity, son of Bashīr— When he speaks, he fulfills his word, and he is not Like one who lowers to people a rope of deception. Whenever Nuʿmān goes to the highlands, I am not ungrateful, And there is no good in one who does not follow the example of the grateful. (In this year Jurhud al-Aslamī died; he was a Companion.)
