Translation
✧ His reproach of the Anṣār and their reply to him ؓ ʿAbd Allāh b. Muḥammad b. ʿAqīl said: Muʿāwiyah came to Madinah, and Abū Qatādah al-Anṣārī met him. Muʿāwiyah said: “All the people came to meet me except you, O company of the Anṣār?” He said: “We had no mounts.” He said: “Where are the water-carrying camels?” He said: “We hamstrung them in seeking you and seeking your father on the day of Badr.” Then Abū Qatādah said: “The Messenger of God ﷺ said to us: ‘You will see after me selfishness (atharah).’” Muʿāwiyah said: “What did he command you?” He said: “He commanded us to be patient.” He said: “Then be patient.” That reached ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Ḥassān b. Thābit, and he said: “Will you not convey to Muʿāwiyah b. Ḥarb, Commander of the Faithful, the report of my speech? For we are patient and will give you respite, until the Day of Mutual Loss and Dispute.”
