The caliphate of Muʿāwiyah b. Abī Sufyān

✧ [The story of Muʿāwiyah's mother and her marriage to Abū Sufyān ؓ] Al-Kharāʾiṭī narrated in "al-Hawātif" from Ḥumayd b. Wahb, who said: (Hind bt. ʿUtbah b. Rabīʿah was married to al-Fākih b. al-Mughīrah, and he was one of the young men of Quraysh. He had a house for hospitality which people entered without permission. One day the house was empty, and al-Fākih and Hind were in it. Then al-Fākih went out for some need of his, and a man among those who used to frequent the house came and entered it. When he saw the woman... he turned and fled. Al-Fākih saw him, so he came to her and struck her with his foot, and said: Who is this who was with you?! She said: I did not see anyone, and I did not wake up until you roused me. He said to her: Go back to your family! And the people talked about her. Her father met with her privately and said to her: My little daughter, the people have spoken much about you, so tell me about that. If the man is truthful... I will send someone to kill him, and the talk about us will cease. And if he is lying... I will bring him to judgment before one of the soothsayers of Yemen. He said: She swore to him by what they used to swear by in the Jāhiliyyah that he was lying about her. So ʿUtbah said to al-Fākih: You have accused my daughter of a grave matter, so bring me to judgment before one of the soothsayers of Yemen. Al-Fākih went out with a group of Banū Makhzūm, and ʿUtbah went out with a group of Banū ʿAbd Manāf, and with them was Hind and women with her to keep her company. When they approached the lands... Hind's condition changed and her face altered. Her father said to her: My little daughter, I see the change in your condition, and that is only because of something unpleasant with you?! She said: No, by Allah, my father, it is not because of something unpleasant, but I know that you are bringing a human being who errs and is right, and I do not trust that he will brand me with a mark that will be a reproach upon me among the Arabs. He said to her: I will test him for you before he looks into your matter. So he whistled to his horse until it let down its member, then he inserted into its urethra a grain of wheat, and tied it with a thong. They came to the soothsayer in the morning, and he slaughtered for them and honored them. When they had eaten the morning meal... ʿUtbah said to him: We have come to you about a matter, and I have hidden something for you to test you with, so look what it is. He said: A grain of wheat in a penis. He said: I want something clearer than this. He said: A grain of wheat in the urethra of a colt. ʿUtbah said: You have spoken truly. Look into the matter of these women. So he began to approach one of them and strike her shoulder and say: Rise, until he approached Hind, and he struck her shoulder and said: Rise, not defiled and not an adulteress, and you will surely give birth to a king called Muʿāwiyah. Al-Fākih looked at her and took her by the hand, but she pulled her hand out of his and said: Away with you, for by Allah, I will strive that this will be from someone other than you. Then Abū Sufyān married her, and she gave birth to Muʿāwiyah).
