Translation
✧ The rising of Ṭawwāf b. Ghallāq There was a group of Kharijites in al-Baṣrah who used to gather at the house of a man named Jidār and converse in his presence, criticizing the authorities. Ibn Ziyād seized them and imprisoned them. Then he summoned them and proposed that they kill one another, and he would release those who had killed. They did so, and he set them free. Among those who killed was Ṭawwāf. Their companions reproached them, saying: "You killed your brothers!" They replied: "We were compelled, and a man may be compelled to disbelief while his heart is at rest in faith." Ṭawwāf and his companions felt remorse. Ṭawwāf said: "Is there no repentance?" They wept and offered blood money to the heirs of those they had killed, but they refused. They offered them retaliation, but they refused. Ṭawwāf met al-Hathhāth b. Thawr al-Sadūsī and said to him: "Do you not see any repentance for us?" He said: "I find nothing for you but a verse from the Book of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, His saying: 'Then, indeed your Lord, to those who emigrated after they had been compelled, and then strove and were patient—indeed, your Lord, after that, is Forgiving and Merciful.' Then Ṭawwāf summoned his companions to rise up and assassinate Ibn Ziyād. They pledged allegiance to him in the year fifty-eight. They were seventy men of Banū ʿAbd al-Qays in al-Baṣrah. A man from among their companions informed Ibn Ziyād of them. That reached Ṭawwāf, so he hastened to set out. They departed that very night, killed a man, and proceeded to al-Jaljāʾ. Ibn Ziyād dispatched the Bukhārī shurṭah, and they fought them. The shurṭah were routed and entered al-Baṣrah, and they pursued them. That was the day of ʿĪd al-Fiṭr. The people swelled their numbers, and they fought and were killed. Ṭawwāf remained with six men. His horse became thirsty, so he plunged it into the water. The Bukhārī shurṭah shot arrows at him until they killed him and crucified him. Then his family buried him. A poet from among them said: O Lord, grant me piety and truthfulness in firmness, and suffice me in what is important, for You are the Provider, the Sufficer. Until I sell that which perishes for the Hereafter, Abiding upon the religion of Mirdās and Ṭawwāf, And Kahmas and Abū al-Shaʿthāʾ, when they fled to God, men of sincere hearts, pressing forward.
