Translation

✧ The dismissal of Ibn Ziyād from Khurāsān and the appointment of Saʿīd b. ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān In the year fifty-six, Muʿāwiyah appointed Saʿīd b. ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān over Khurāsān. The reason for that was that he asked Muʿāwiyah to appoint him over Khurāsān, and he said: "ʿUbayd Allāh b. Ziyād is there." He said: "By Allah, my father favored you until by his favor you reached the utmost limit to which one may aspire and beyond which none may be challenged, yet you did not show gratitude for his kindness nor repay him, and you have put forward this one—meaning Yazīd—and pledged allegiance to him. By Allah, I am better than him in father, mother, and self!" Muʿāwiyah said: "As for your father's kindness, repayment for it is indeed incumbent upon you, and part of my gratitude for that was that I sought his blood. As for your father's superiority over his father, he is, by Allah, better than me. As for your mother's superiority over his mother, by my life, a woman of Quraysh is better than a woman of Kalb. As for your superiority over him, by Allah, I would not love that the Ghūṭah be filled for Yazīd with men like you." Then Yazīd said to him: "O Commander of the Faithful, he is your cousin, and you are the most entitled to look into his affair. He has reproached you, so satisfy him." So he appointed him over the war of Khurāsān, and appointed Isḥāq b. Ṭalḥah over its tax revenues. Isḥāq was the son of Muʿāwiyah's maternal aunt; his mother was Umm Abān bt. ʿUtbah b. Rabīʿah. When he reached al-Rayy, Isḥāq died, so Saʿīd took charge of its war and its tax revenues. When he arrived in Khurāsān, he crossed the river to Samarqand. The people of Ṣughd came out to him, and they stood facing each other for a day until nightfall without fighting. Mālik b. al-Rayb said: You kept trembling while standing on the day of Ṣughd from cowardice, until I feared you would become a Christian. The next day they fought, and Saʿīd defeated them and besieged them in their city. They made peace with him and gave him hostages from among them: fifty young boys from the sons of their nobles. Then he marched to Tirmidh and conquered it by treaty, but he did not fulfill his pledge to the people of Samarqand, and he brought the boys with him to Madinah. Among those who were killed with him was Qutham b. ʿAbbās b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib.
