The caliphate of Muʿāwiyah b. Abī Sufyān
وفي سنة ثلاث وخمسين فُتِحَتْ رُودُسُ ، وَهِيَ جَزِيرَةٌ فِي الْبَحْرِ، فَتَحَهَا جُنَادَةُ بْنُ أَبِي أُمَيَّةَ الْأَزْدِيُّ، فَنَزَلَهَا الْمُسْلِمُونَ، وَزَرَعُوا، وَاتَّخَذُوا بِهَا الْأَمْوَالَ وَالْمَوَاشِيَ، وَكَانَ لَهُمْ نَاطُورٌ يُحَذِّرُهُمْ مَنْ يُرِيدُهُمْ مِنَ الْبَحْرِ بِكَيْدٍ، وَكَانُوا أَشَدَّ شَيْءٍ عَلَى الرُّومِ، يَعْتَرِضُونَهُمْ فِي الْبَحْرِ فَيَقْطَعُونَ سُفُنَهُمْ، وَكَانَ مُعَاوِيَةُ يُدِرُّ لَهُمُ الْعَطَاءَ، فَلَمَّا مَاتَ مُعَاوِيَةُ أَقَفْلَهُمْ يَزِيدُ [بْنُ مُعَاوِيَةَ ]. وَقِيلَ: هَذَا كَانَ فِي سَنَةِ أَرْبَعٍ وَخَمْسِينَ. وَقِيلَ: فُتِحَتْ سَنَةَ سِتِّينَ.
Translation
✧ In the year fifty-three, Rhodes was conquered. It is an island in the sea. Junādah b. Abī Umayyah al-Azdī conquered it. The Muslims settled there, cultivated, and acquired wealth and livestock there. They had a watchman who warned them of anyone approaching them from the sea with guile. They were the harshest thing upon the Byzantines, intercepting them at sea and cutting off their ships. Muʿāwiyah used to provide them with stipends. When Muʿāwiyah died, Yazīd [b. Muʿāwiyah] recalled them. It is said: This was in the year fifty-four. It is also said: It was conquered in the year sixty.
